System of the Year

I'm going to be an indecisive bastard and not vote but I'm interested in knowing what everyone else will choose. Base your choice on this year's releases only.

The systems excelled in different areas.

Xbox and PC provided great online gaming and the open-ended games I love. Plus, the multi-format games tended to be best on these systems.

PS2 had the most variety as usual, from great SRPGs to gun games. The quantity of good PS2 exclusives is very high. Having the most third-parties is a major benefit.

GC managed to get a handful of good exclusives as well. I was disappointed in the first-party games though.

GBA proved that portable gaming can actually hang with the TV consoles with innovative stuff like Wario Ware.

GBA, then Xbox.

tough choice between PS2 and GBA.

Xbox or PC. Nothing else comes anywhere close.

Hands down for me, GBA SP. Nothing got more playtime from me other than that system.

I went with the Cube. I only used my XBOX for online(tons of fun) and I don't think I played shit on my PS2. The GBA kicked ass as usual, but it was mostly rehashes.

GBA/SP > GC > PS2 = Xbox = PC.

The GBA has had Ninja Five-O, Golden Sun 2, Mario & Luigi, Puzzle Fighter, Double Dragon, Sonic Advance 2, FFTA and many other great games this year. Best console by far.

About the three-way tie: I like some of the titles the PS2 has had this year, but I've actually bought more GC stuff and my PS2 has laid silent for a while, with the exception of Ape Escape 2. The Xbox finally got a few titles I actually want to play (like Crimson Skies), but I'll get around to those when I can get a modded unit on the cheap. The PC is metioned soley for Halo Internet play, which got me back into FPS games. In my reality, that makes all three about equal.

Actually, vB does track who voted for what and what their IPs are, so that's not entirely infeasible.

PS2 wins for me thanks to games like Disgaea, Dark Cloud 2, Winning XI Intl, Ratchet & Clank 2, Bombastic, Culdcept, Dragon Quarter, Arc the Lad, etc. PS2's continued success comes from the ability to have a steady flow of top-notch high-profile games as well as the best niche titles.

GBA is the runner-up. There were not quite as many games but what came out was of superb quality with games like Sonic Advance 2, Boktai, MegaMan Zero 2, Golden Sun II, and Advance Wars 2 heading the list.

Xbox had a few really good looking games like PGR2 and Otogi, but not nearly enough to make me even consider purchasing the system.

Gamecube was looking bad already and looks even worse after 03, as several of the games I was slightly interested in turned out looking pretty lousy. The only game I'd actually want is Billy Hatcher and it's not worth buying a sytsem for, not even at $80cdn - which was a sale price I'm so happy and relieved that I resisted a few months back. Phew.

Got a lot of use out of my Cube this year. Not so much out of my PS2....

Xbox was alright. I'll vote Cube.

Definitely the Cube, thanks to WM XIX, the GB Player, and Viewtiful Joe.

Cube as I only play GBA on the GB Player :p

The Xbox game library just sucks ass. The only 2003 exclusives worth mentioning are Crimson Skies (and only if you pay for Live) and Panzer Dragoon Orta. Everything else sucks or can be played on some other system.

The Gamecube didn't have a particularly fantastic year, but it was solid and had some great exclusives. The PS2 lineup was predictably good - Madden 2004, Tiger Woods 2004, Smackdown, etc - but not spectacular. Disgaea is brilliant though.

The GBA lineup just blows everything else away.

I was going to vote XBOX until I realized more than half the games I have for it are PS2 ports. PS2.

With games like Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, WarioWare, Ninja Five-O and Metroid Fusion, I voted GBA as my System of the Year. My decision is also based on what system I had the most play time and fun on. :)

Game Boy Advance was amazing this year. Aria of Sorrow, Fire Emblem, Boktai, Wario Ware, Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga, Megaman Zero 2...

PS2 had Zone of the Enders 2, The Getaway, SOCOM II, Disgaea, Xenosaga, Final Fantasy X-2, Dark Cloud 2, Guilty Gear X2, Virtua Fighter 4 Evo....

GameCube had Wind Waker, F-Zero, Mario Kart, and Viewtiful Joe.

Xbox had KOTOR, online Rainbow 6, and Panzer Dragoon Orta.

Gamecube > GBA > PS2 > Tiger Game.com > Amstrad GX4000 > Xbox > Dirty Underpants > PC

An easy vote for the Cube for me.

Close call for me between Gamecube and PS2. I'll give the slight edge to the PS2 this year again but the Gamecube had a really good lineup.

None of the above. No system stood out for me this year.

PS2 > GBA > GC

Sold my XBOX since I only owned 2 games ever..and I dont play PC games.

GBA, PC, Xbox, in that order.

I played 5 hours straight of KotOR on PC. Call of Duty is excellent too. PC for me.

I voted GBA. I've played quite a bit of the SP this year with titles like Golden Sun, Castlevania:Aria of Sorrow and older titles like Castlevania:COTM, Metroid Fusion and Advance wars.

The PS2 and Gamecube got about equal playtime, from me. They both had titles that I wanted to play, but not so much that I could'nt keep up.


The PC has probably got more play time out of me, but that is because of Star Wars:Galaxies and recently Halo.

XBOX > GBA > PC > PS2 > Namco TV toy > NGage > GC

I wish I could hug my XBOX. XBOXLive is the best thing to happen to console gaming in years and kept me constantly using the box. The GBA had Wario Ware and Mario and Luigi which is more than enough to push it over the PS2 which I played a lot but I enjoyed the GBA stuff a bit more. The Namco tv dealie has Pac-Man which is awesome!

As for my GC? Well..

It didn't fair too well this year.

GC/GBPlayer > PS2 > N64 > XBox

I play my GC and GBPlayer everyday, and my PS2 nearly everyday. I still play some DK64, Banjo Tooie, Shadowgate 64 on my N64. The XBox has been such a turd this year for me, if your not into XBox Live, and I'm not, then it's almost been worthless. PDOrta....whatever. I liked my XBox better last year.

Zelda WW, FZero, VJ, GBPlayer (and all the GBA's library), Pac Man vs, Soul Calibur II, Mario Kart, Zelda Collection, those have all kept my Cube turned on. Every multi-platform game runs faster and smoother on the Cube (believe it), usually twice as fast as the ole Box. Oh well, next year is looking better for the Box, Halo 2, HL2 (Halo's daddy) and hopefully some suprises from Rare (a Banjo Tooie port would own). But right now, it's just a fu%^ing 3DO.

Xbox. I'm don't think I even powered up my PS2 this year, except for the occasional Rez, and about 2 hours' worth of Rygar. I don't have a Cube, but I did have a chance to play Viewtiful Joe and F-Zero, both of which I enjoyed.

I guess this is your official schtick now (and yes, you've made it abundantly clear that you actually own an Xbox, even if the reason remains a mystery). It seems ridiculous to me, but whatever -- you get to play what you want, like what you want, and (within reason) type what you want. But, including only this year's exclusive releases, I had plenty of fun playing Orta, Otogi, Rainbow Six 3, Crimson Skies, Top Spin, PGR2, and (heaven help me) DOA:XVB, not to mention KOTOR, and a shitload of superior (or at least equal) mulitiplatform revs like Metal Arms, Splinter Cell, and Soul Calibur, and some decent Live-enabled games like Ghost Recon, GR:IT, Wolfenstein, and plenty of others.

A much improved year for Xbox, IMO.

PS2 had some cool stuff, but I easily played my Xbox the most by far. Always having the best versions of multiplatform releases never hurts, and there's some great exclusives & online play. Quality over quantity.

NFSHP is TEN times better on PS2, Burnout 2 on Xbox blows the GC version to bits, Splinter Cell is better on the Xbox, as are a bunch of others. The GC is hardly the best place to play multiplatform titles. I preferred SC on Xbox too, even though Spawn sucks. I simply cannot play fighters with that crappy GC pad, and an elf in tights did nothing to excite me.

As for my vote:

Xbox.

My GBA got some playtime with Mario & Luigi and SMB3. Aside from Kingdom Hearts (loving it), I didn't play much PS2 but there were plenty of good games for me to get around to.

As for my GC....Well, if it weren't for a cheap copy of NBA 2K3 and Animal Crossing, it would be covered in dust. VJ was awesome, but WW bored me to tears and F-Zero didn't really interest me. Mario Kart didn't either. There was hardly enough out there to make it my most-played system and things don't look all that good so far for next year either.

I spent most of the year on Live. Anyone who doesn't have it is really missing out. It really makes all the difference in the world.

Hmmm..I suppose I'll go with the PS2. It delivered what I wanted.

I'll give the GBA and PC runners up since I actually played them considerably more this year than the previous.

I rarely touch my GC and if not for Otogi my Xbox would be an even bigger joke.

Because DiffusionX is often correct. Aside from that, they're not different, and he's gets called on it routinely. What does one have to do with the other?
