Im hoping I manage to get a poll going, still trying to figure out how to use it. If it doesn't work, please delete this thread.
First post is just a test to make sure i get the poll to work, second will give a brief view of my opinions.
Ok, well, i guess i will post my opinions on each. If I am wrong, or anyone else has more info, please fill me in. I just wanted to know what sort of fighting games the "Very knowledgable about games but not fighting game tournament player crowd gravitates too, nowadays"
Here is my notions about each game (Note:I make no claim to be a editorial writer or whatnot, so please don't diffx all over me):
Sf2-low level: Wow, this game has aged much better than say, Mortal Kombat. The principles and ideas placed forth in this game still dictate most of what is seen in modern day 2d fighting games (as well as alot of 3d fighting games). No ridiculous combos need to be learned, staple set of characters that I can barely live without in my fighting games. At low levels, it also has good balance. Sadly, it is lacking in game features (like running and such) and I think it feels a bit "static" almost.
Sf2-high level: Goooo Akuma! So unblanced he is banned from tourneys. Then, on the still unblanced but barely not banned is Old Sagat, who throws fireballs so quickly it is retarded. Playable characters from what i could tell are Old Ryu, Old Sagat, New Ken, Chun li (not sure which), Dhalsim, M.Bison and Balrog. Honorable mention goes to Vega. Thats a fairly good roster for a seroius level fighting game. My biggest gripe with higher level is some of the blatant counter characters, which is VERY strong in this game. Dhalsim takes out ryu, Ryu generally beats Balron, Bison kills Dhalsim. If you are in the position of being countered, then the game just looks straight up boring. Still, it was the daddy of all fighting games, and im happy to see it still somewhat playable.
SF3-low level: I have a personal bias against this group of fighters. So few cool characters added, (Yun, Yang, Makato, thats it in my book) so many good ones removed. Countering that, is the absolutely amazing animation. Every hit looks so fluid i can see the twist in the opponents neck as he feels my hits. Another Plus is playing as some of my favorite characters with some updated features. Tech Rolls, dashing, super jumping, multiple supers, tech recovery, it all adds alot of movement, which is a plus in my book. Downsides, music is just terrible for character selection, story is as bad as it gets, without being vf.
SF3-high level: Ken, Uriel, Makota, Chun-li, Yun, ill give honorable mention to akuma this time. Wow, thats less than SF2. Alot of it boils down to crouching medium kick into super, which gets boring after a while. On the upside, parrying adds a defensive technique that can get you out of almost anything. Tack on option selection of throws do to the LK LP system, and you have one of the most solid 2d fighting game defense systems to date. Spacing, as with most capcom games, becomes paramount, but okizeme mindgames play a bigger role in this game that some others. Chun-li and Ken are suprisingly scrub friendly though, able to beat the other top tiers even if they have spent more time with them. Nonetheless, at high levels, of all the games mentioned, this one gets my number 2.
MvC2-low level: This is almost a joke. How long does it take to make the jump from low level to high level? It pretty much involves placing the cursor over cable and hitting A. Character balance is just TERRRIBLE in this game. So bad, that it matters at low level play. Now, barring a few super easy to use characters, this game is fun. Low levels going at it, crazy mayhem everywhere, an awesome cast. Who doesn't like seeing my spidey, gambit, ryu, walk over ice picks spidey, spidey, spidey. Assisting puts even more shit on the screen, most importantly, giving you the feel like its actually the marvel universe. Still the best marvel game imho to date.
MvC2-high level: And here it is, the number one American high level play game. Why? I can't figure it out for the life of me. It is broken beyond belief, there are like 5 usable characters, maybe 12 if you consider assist possiblities. Off the top of my head, obviously, Magneto, Storm, Cable, Sentinel as main hitters. Solid Assists are Psylock, Captain Commando, and Dr Doom. Also, of note is the strider doom infinite lockdown, which is playable at tourney levels. So, WHY is this game broken? Have a seat, this could take a while.
Zone control: Cable can whip out in like 2 frames a giant viper beam that could quite possibly destroy your entire team. If you fuck up once. He has this full screen zone in front of him, that you cannot throw out moves. If paired with captain commando, he also has a verticle column that you can't fuck up in. Think sliders, the top to bottom no fuck up slider is where captain commando could come out, and the left to right no fuck up slider is the entire screen that cable is on. Doesn't that sound like FUN. Not really, you need to keep your ass outta these 2 areas of you want to attack, unless you are right on him. This destroys a huge percentage of the cast.
Triangle dashing: Sounds like a cool technique in theory. Your character barely jumps off the ground before air dashing downwards. How is this broken? You can throw out a countless number of high and low hits, that are not blockable on reaction, and will eventually break your opponents defense. You throw out the air high as you are dashing downwards, or the low hit when you hit the ground, or call out psylocke, or do any combination thereof. If you get hit once, you are into an infinite, and then a guard break, and then a good game.
Infinites + Guard breaking: We all know what an infinite is, i dont' need to assume that much ignorance. It also allows you to charge up 5 bars on a dead body, which leads to guard breaking. I'm a bit sketchy, but i think this occurs when the opponent is coming in after one person was defeated. If he is hit with 2 different things on the way down, he cannot block the second. So, you infinite, new guy comes out, you use a hit, go into super, or a second super with those fire bars you have, he gets triple hiper viper beamed by cable, or infinited, or whatever.
Strider Doom lockdown: This is so gay i cannot even imagine enjoying playing against it. Through clever use of assists, oroburos, teleports, ect. the character is forced to block indefinately. Thats it, you lose, game over, unless the player screws up. Sounds like fun.
Tired, will continue in next post.
Or i will stop being such a fucking pussy and do it now.
CvS2-low level: One of my favorite low level games, and for that reason, i refuse to learn its high level. I can create my favorite team of Ryu, Rock, and Athena. I can do match ups i have been dying to since the two series came out. I can use aspects from SF3, A3, or the SnK fighters to battle each other. I could not be happier. They even gave me my C+D attacks. Classic Gameplay feel + seemingly good balance at low levels makes this one of my favorites.
CvS2-high level: Whereas SF2 is spacing, SF3 is crouching mk into super, MvC2 is zone control/just fucking stupid, CvS2 is blocking. Thats right, its all about the turtle. Now, of course, everyone knows about roll-canceling, and this is part of the reason why its all about blocking, but how can i respect a game where justin wong came super close to beating one of the best japanese players, by doing nothing but blocking, then lost all 3 of his characters when his opponent chose someone that is marginally more difficult to block. Tiers are back in action, capcom style of course. Its debatable as to whether the S and P grooves are usable, but Diago was one pixel away from losing to an American S-groover, so that sorta puts that to fuzzy. Sagat is amazing, with his crouching fierce. Blanka, Vega, E-honda, Cammy, Sakura seem to be the popular choices. Sakura will A-groove her dragon punch over and over till she breaks your guard, then does a stupidly good combo. Everyone else just roll cancels, i think. This game is such a turtle fest at high levels ......................it...........ju.............st....................... seems.................................................to............................. .............. dr...........................ag ..........................................on...................................... for.............ever. It is for this reason considered the slowest of the regular tourney 2d's.
Guilty Gear XX-low level: Looking back, i don't think this is the best game for really low level play. I fell in love with it because of its amazing movement opportunities. Character design is crazy, which i like as well. I am so far removed from this stage with this game, that its really futile for me to write about it.
Guilty Gear XX-high level: THE BEST 2D HIGH LEVEL GAME YET (not including reload). I cannot do anything but lavish with praise. All 20 characters are useable, although some are a bit better than others, it is really very feasible to win a tourney with any. But where do i start? Defense system is the only one i like more than sf3's. Instant blocking to get out of pressure, Faultless defense to avoid chip damage/push away, back dashing for invunerable frames. One of my favorite things is you have to faultless defend in air in order to block ground based attacks. Fucking genious. The two biggest complaints i have had about this game are "the throws are not techable" and "The combos don't look fluid". Now, the throws are not techable because it would make guilty gear more of a turtle fest if throws were techable, which is something i (and most people) would not want. As for combos don't look fluid, thats personal preference, but its baised aroudn the gatiling chain type of combo, where you are given a number of frames (buffer window) to add in a move that links, but those number of frames sometimes make it look less fluid. This is opposed to the capcom style of having no buffer window. Ugh, i don't think anyone wants to hear me say more about how good this game is, so i will leave it at that.
Last Blade 2-low level: I need to spend some more time with this, and would love to, but nobody seems to play it
Last Blade 2-high level: Broken, completely broken. The guy with 2 knives dominates all. Not even played in tourneys to my knowledge.
Mark of the Wolves. It's easy to pick up, deep to master.
This poll sucks because Vampire Savior isn't on the list.
Nintendo makes the Crash Bandicoot games, right?
um, you can delete the thread yourself, you know..
...nor is Last Blade 1, KoF, SFa3,...
