Back in '92 Mattel was desperate to find a way to uplift the stagnant sales of Ken dolls - they thus came upon the idea of creating a newer hipper Ken. They sent out teams to attend raves, taking notes and polaroids, to come up with ideas for his new look. What Mattel churned out was one of the most infamous toys ever, a "Metro" Ken which they named Earring Magic Ken. Sadly, not being prone to researching their subjects more carefully, Mattel had chosen to include an “accessory” that was oddly commonplace at these raves - a huge metal ring around a necklace. It turned out that this “accessory” was a Cock Ring and Earring Magic Ken suddenly became known as Cock Ring Ken and was all the rage among the gay community and collectors alike. The toy was quickly recalled.
