I saw the 8pm showing last night, and I thought it was excellent.
The only complaint I had after the initial viewing was with how quickly Obidiah gained control of his suit.
It took Tony days and days to even get off the ground and be steady at a few feet with his suit, whereas as soon as Obidiah powered his up, he seemed to have masterful control over it. A VERY small complaint, granted, but a complaint nonetheless.
Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck. Those spoilers cannot be true. I have dreamed about what that's hinting at for YEARS. It cannot be true.
Yes and no. I'll spoiler my reasons so people don't have it ruined on them: Although they didn't really show Obidiah really learning his suit techniques there was enough foresight put in to the movie to cover it. He told the company to have all of the top engineers on the project ASAP when he met with the terrorist leader and betrayed him. He also said that the prototype was tested and ready, except for the power core which eluded him and his engineers.
So they really didn't focus on it, but there were enough breadcrumbs spread throughout the movie to cover the fact that Obidiah was up to no good while we watched Stark grow.
I literally just walked in from seeing this movie and it has to be my favorite superhero movie. The characters were defined and interacted with each other well, every scene led somewhere, the dialogue was witty without being pretentious and the casting was spot on. The scene with the little doctor guy and Stark's escape actually carried real emotional weight. And Gwenyth Paltrow was really, really good as Pepper Pots. Instant DVD purchase. Blows Spiderman out of the water IMO, just on the fact that the movie was played straight alone. There were no cheesy moments with brides running slow motion through a crowded city. I kind of feel the way about this movie the same way I felt when I first saw the original Tim Burton Batman movie.
What an amazing kick-off to the summer movie season.
I read today at superherohype.com that the studio wants to shoot for a 2010 release date. I assumed 3 years because that seems about the norm for most comic book sequels. Actually, with the exception of Spiderman 2, I think all recent comic book sequels have been at least 3 years apart.
Iron Man was awesome. Hands down. I definitely need to see this again and agree this is one of the best live-action versions of a superhero movie to date. WOW! Looking forward to the sequel, especially with Shield and Sam Jackson as Nick Fury making their true debut!
I really enjoyed this. I typically hate superhero movies, too.
