Censored Hip-Hop Albums

Right, so, some member of my family bought my 12-year old sister the latest Outkast double CD thingy. That's cool, they're fucking great, right?

Anyway, I asked to borrow it for the long ride to work. I pop it in and, guess what? All the "bad words" have been taken out. I guess this is the Wal Mart version or something.

Funny thing is, it doesn't matter. The context is still there, and they're still talking about sex whether or not they say "fuck" or "pussy." It's hilarious.

I just can't imagine someone listening to this and saying, "No, no, this can not be sold to minors as it is." Then, they listen to the same songs talking about the same subject matter, just with the odd cuss word missing, and say "Ah, that's better, sell it to everyone!"

A song called "Spread" just can't be made "clean," no matter how hard you try. All you're doing is ruining the music.

Chingy did the same thing- he has "dirty" and "clean" versions of his CD out (the one with Holidae Inn on it). Gay.

Yea when I was younger I remember buying Eazy E's- Eazier said than done album and getting pretty pissed when I found out it was censored.

They used to make clean / regular versions of a lot of albums back in the day. This was also a time when parental advisory stickers were first going around. I think now they just do it for stuff that's gonna get lots of airplay, which I don't even buy so I don't have to worry about that anymore.

My point was that they're not clean at all.

You just can't do it. I'll post some lyrics when I get home, it's hilarious.

"Bleeping" is pathetic. In albums and on TV. It's not like people are going "Geez, what could they possibly be saying??????" The censors aren't really censoring anything - in fact, they end up drawing more attention to the lyrics this way.

It's funny when TV stations get someone other than the actors to dub over profanity on movies. It's like watching Kung Fu Theater.

The censored version of Mallrats is the best example of that.

Yeah like in Die Hard with a Vengence, they had a different guy speak over Samuel L. Jackson's lines whenever he'd cuss (which was like, 3/4ths of his dialogue). My favorite was, "Man, MacLaine you white (cut to different voice) melon farmer!"

You should hear the censored verisons of Kevin Smith flicks, particularly Mallrats, which just gets butchered by it. Censoring in this form just ends up hurting the piece, and really, it'd be better for the stuff to either not be shown/sold at all rather than have it maimed like it ends up being.

The Big Lebowski censored for TV is hilarious, really a must watch. The dubs of the "this is what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass" bit are particularly special.

Anyways, I agree. Its not like kids don't know what is being said, and most of the time only half the word is bleeped out. My favorite is when you hear As* ****. you can still hear the ass, but hole is bleeped out. And blurring the middle finger on TV pisses me off. What the hell is that about?

I love seeing a hip-hop video and listening for the akward censored parts, usually it's not a small bleep here or there, lots of times it seems theres large gaps in the lyrics because they'll just edit the whole phrase out. The best I seen was MOP's video for Cold as Ice, there were more edits than lyrics:lol:

Someone once brought in the edited version of The Chronic and tried to trade it in at the store I was working at. I gave 'em a funny look and just said no.

As far as movies go, anyone ever try and watch Baseketball on TV? yuck, just as bad as kevin smith's flicks. Thank god Comedy Central only plays the South Park movie after midnight and unedited.

I don't mind censored hip-hop, but this depends on how it's censored. For whatever reason I find profanities in reverse (ie: "ish-e" instead of "shit" and "kophf" instead of "fuck") aurally pleasing.

I work at a CD store, so I see this all the damn time. Pretty much any rap/hiphop that has cursing in it has an edited version. Then again, some alternative has clean versions of the CDs too... trapt, korn, pink, etc.

Nothing beats the censord 2 Live Crew albums from back in the day.

The only censored album i've ever bought in Australia was the South Park album, the one that came in three different levels of censorship. Otherwise, i've bought an album with the word "cunt" used quite frequently from a chain store like Wal Mart.

From what I've read in lefty books like "No Logo", Wal Mart sounds like the house of satan, with really low prices!

I've never purchased a music CD from Wal-Mart for this very reason. From what I've seen they don't even tell you it's a hacked up version of the original work.

They apparently don't have a problem selling R rated movies and M rated games, however.

Edited music, even on the radio is ridiculous in my opinion. Curses are all bad and whatnot I guess (or whatever) but the subject matter is the beef behind the music and when you edit a curse you just draw more attention to it anyhow. So what differance is there if you here "fuck" or "f---" you still know what they're saying anyhow.

I always laugh hysterically when I hear the edited version of Gin and Juice.

Yeah, I think they suck and everyone involved should be forced to watch the extended director's cut of Showgirls. If the rudeness doesn't kill them then the acting, story, or dialogue will.

One good thing about England, cursing on TV. Watch a TV at night and you'll hear 'fuck you, you are a fucking prat' and so on.

Saw Billy Madison last week, no commercials, no bleeps.

Though, it is inconsistent. Saw Wrath of Kahn on tv, they edit out all the scenes of the worm thing crawling into ears.

MTV here will show the titties in 50 Cent's PIMP, yet bleeps out 'cuma' in Outkast's Hey, Yea.

MVS - there is a 9pm watershed in England. If it is after 9 on network tv then cursing is allowed. This is b/c they think every kid in England goes to bed before 9 and won't hear the cursing. Then again, after the watershed, they can show full nudity on television too...
