And yes, the original purpose of the 2nd Amendment was to allow citizens the right to own a gun to defend themselves and their property, which is something that shouldn't be up to debate.

Obviously the 2nd Amendment doesnt mean much to non-Americans so of course your rationale is different.

Depends which country you're in, in the US it is nothing like this. Washington D.C. and New York City have some of the most strict gun-control laws and they have the most crime involving fire-arms. Vermont basically has no state gun laws (no permit needed for concealed hand-guns) and they have an extremely low amount of crime involving firearms. I hear Australia has an extremely nasty crime-rate involving firearms and I believe their policy on gun-control is similar to Canada.

If you take the gun's away, not only will just criminals have them but if some wacko takes over in the government then how will the citizens resist him?

Again, you have to realize there's a difference in political culture. We don't fear this because of our specific history, but you guys do. I mean, ask Andrew, Icepop, Spike or cka about how they feel about the threat of a tyrannical government. 'Tyrannical' government is unique to your history not ours, so we don't consider this a valid argument. Instead, we'd posit that if gun control is strong, criminals are less able to access guns. When we think of criminals, we think of someone who has already commited a crime. Of course he shouldn't have a gun, you'd say. But a lot of crimes are quotidal, perpetrated by run of the mill folks who'd look like upstanding citizens when they walked into the store to access the gun they'd later use to blow away so and so.

It's all about context, culture and history.

What are the laws on self-defense? To get away with killing someone--and not be charged with manslaughter--I imagine you'd have to have been physically threatened / fearful of your own life.
