Improvements for KoF 2002 for PS2

Sorry The Bastard, but I beat you to it :p

It seems KoF 2002 will have 3d backgrounds like in 2001 for ps2, and will also feature Goenitz, Geese Howard, and Orochi Iori ripped out of SvC, as well as the 2k1 versions of Shingo and King like in the DC version.

Awesome! Like a new evil team, but they'll prolly be called the SvC team.

I'd definately rebuy it for 30-40 bucks if the backgrounds looked damn nice. I can finally make an ultimate evil team out of Rugal, Geese, and Goenitz now :D

Even more news.... the modes will be the same as the DC version, meaning it'll have Single, Team, Practice, Gallery, and Challenge. The japanese release date for this is March 25, 2004.

With the great success the MVS and Dreamcast versions have gotten, this will probably be another money maker for the now money ridden SNK Playmore.

6 freaking years for Geese and Goenitz to show up in another KOF. This is an instant purchase for me. :)

Nice extras there. I had considered the DC one but now I'll wait for the PS2 version to show up on import. As for SNK USA, they should consider making their localized version multi-modal (English, Japanese, and uncensored English mode).

Yashiro, O. Iori, and Goenitz will be the ultimate Orochi team for me. :D

Usually the censored bit might bother me, but since it has Geese it doesn't really matter anymore. Hopefully he is not SvC Geese or all the other characters are gonna get TEH PWND!!!

2001 backgrounds are ass on the PS2 and hardly 3-D. Smooth filtered backgrounds and razor sharp pixellated characters all wrapped in high res is not cool.

Geese and Goenitz? Allright I'm fucking sold. This will be the first time I will be able to overlook the censorship issue... unless Japanese PS2's suddenly drop in price quick and I come into a chunk of money.

I haven't heard about this! Awesome. I'm a big fan of 2k1 and 2k2 (2k1 probably being my fav KOF) and to get enhanced versions later on the Ps2 is a great thing. Give the game enough life back to make me pick up and play the hell out of it again, not like I put it down in the first place.
Those are really nice additions too. Better than the 2k1 port.

Yea, I 100% agree here, 2K1 looked like ass. It looked good on screen shots that I saw, but once your playing it, it looked horrible. I actually spent alot of wasted time in party mode just so that I could access the original arcade backgrounds. The are not that bad compared to the ass-tastic 3D ones... not like they were good to begin with. 2K looks amazing, with it's transparencies and the scan lines. SNKP, why not make 2K2 look like 2K? please :cry:

Because they try to add progressive scan support? Real low-res games (see DC MVC) are pixel-doubled in VGA and people is happier with 3D filters. And game developers still to realize that fake scanlines were invented the millennium before...

Those are really nice additions too. Better than the 2k1 port.

Don't lie. If SNK put out a box filled with nothing but toilet paper and cans of tuna you'd still shell out a grand for it.

I still don't understand what's so hard about making backgrounds for these guys. I mean, the BG's for KOF's 94-99 were GORGEOUS (especially in 97).

Now, they have no color and no expressiveness.

I've seen the backgrounds of '03 and they are definitely up to par. It's because 2k1 and 2k2 were made by an entirely different company.

Not really. Eolith did manage the products, but they were co-developed by Brezza Soft, which still assists SNK Playmore.

3D backgrounds in a 2D fighter does not equal "enhanced." That's like enhancing a cars paint job by running a key down the side of it.

It depends. DC KOF98 & 99 used 3D backgrounds with almost all the original 2D textures. The result was not bad at all. 3D backgrounds a la Marvel vs Capcom 2 (hi-res, filtered, excess of polygonized elements) aren't suitable for a 2D low-res game. I suppose the ones in PS2 KOF 2001 are between these two types.

KoF99's backgrounds (on Dreamcast) were absolutely terrible. MvC2 backgrounds are also really bad. CvS2 actually has decent 3D backgrounds, though they'd still look better if 2D.

I agree. The characters wouldn't "stand out" like they do. Have you seen how the characters on the PS version of CvS look against the 2-d backgrounds of that game? The characters actually look natural a not pixelated.

CVS's backgrounds were a mix of hand drawn work and digitized images in real hi-res. The ugly sprites' presentation make them nice to see, but they were probably the most denatured backgrounds from Capcom ever.

Yes...becus eventhough GGX looks great....KoF,Garou,SF3 all have superior animation.

Yeah, what the hell is so hard about making something look good, damnit? And if they ever make a 3D fighter (that plays in 2D) why can't they make the people look as good as Soul Calibur?

Although SvC has made me appreciate CvS and CvS2 so much more than I ever did before.

I hated the look of menus, life bars, etc in the first CvS. The chara select screen was horrible. I felt like part of the game looked incomplete. Well, besides the sprites. Backgrounds win, but I thought CvS2 was a lot better in terms of presentation overall.

I don't think it looks that bad, it's better than the DC cover at least.
Besides the background, the game REALLY needs a new soundtrack. We could argue all day about which has the worst backgrounds, but I think everyone agrees 02 has the worst music. It's barely even there.

King's team in 2K1 has some utterly bland music. It's highly repetitive and is also technically inferior to that in other Neo games. I think it sounds like something out of an 8-bit title.

Recap- Thanks for sharing the screenshots. These are looking much better than KOF 2001 in terms of BGs.

No problem. KOF 2003 backgrounds are already the best in the whole series for some people. I myself still prefer KOF96's...

I agree. It's also really depressing playing against KoF2k3's mid boss Kusanagi and hearing Kyo's classic music. Just makes all of 2k3's music seem that much worse.

Agreed completely. I love 96 and 97's backgrounds, and starting from 98, the bkgds have declined worse and worse every year (until 2003, which is at least mildly interesting).

Hell, I thought 95 look pretty damn good next to any kof's 98+. But 96 is definitely the summit.

#2,i generaly dont care about the music that much,although KoF99 had great music,i tend to listen to the Streets of Rage 2 soundtrack when i play KoF. It just fits.
#3. 96 had the best BG's. 01 was garbage 00 wasn't any better.
and finally.if ever a company needed some Falcoon cover art its SNK...will someone please email them some of his stuff so they can make a smart decision and hire him.

I like good art on my covers, but it doesn't make the game. What gets me though is of all these companies SNK has some really great artist at their disposal doing the manuals, character art, and intro's etc. yet they produce some of the worst fucking covers I've ever seen.

You'd think that last one common sense, but then you look at SvC. I thought someone should tell them about that crucial detail.
