Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel

Yo!

I've already mentioned that I purchased this game in the haul thread, and after playing a bit, I've decided it needs it's own thread.

Rather than coming up with something new to say about the game, I'm simply going to quote what I said in the haul thread:

It really is a great game. The dialogue is freaking funny, complete with foul-mouthed local yokkles (ridiculously foul-maouthed, if I might add), and it recreates that Fallout feel quite nicely.

There are three characters to choose from, a black dude, a white chick, and a "ghoul." I picked Cain, the ghoul, and doscovered that the dialogue, apparently, is taylored to the character you pick. No one but Cain can scare the mayor of Carbon into giving him a few free caps just by commenting on his own deteriorated appearence. I like nice little touches like this.

The game plays identically to Baldur's Gate: DA, so I'm not going to say anything about it outside of the fact that I love it.

I have much more to say about the game, but I'll save it for later in hopes that I've inspired some of you to come on in an sound off.

Hmmm... I may have to pick that up when it's cheap.

Whatever. I want my fucking Fallout 3.

I already bought one spinoff (Tactics, which was a great fucking game by the by). I want Fallout 3.

I was just waiting for some impressions before I bought this thing. They seem to be favorable, so I'll have to pick it up soon. :)

And for the record, I bought the XBOX version (just like I always do). From what I've seen, the XBOX handles the game more effectively. I even did a side-by-side comparison in the store. ;)

I might give this a rent now. Shoulda been Fallout 3 :curse:

Aw, come on, man. They're just diversifying the Fallout universe. A universe, in my opinion, which is worth diversifying. If you love Fallout so much, I fail to see what the problem is. You're almost garaunteed a Fallout 3. What's the harm in branching the series out, especially if the spin-offs are so damned good?

I thought F3 was pretty much canceled? Maybe I'm just bitter.

Except that they're not branching out, they are taking Dark Alliance and moving it a few hundred years in the future. It's not a good thing.

Its out already !!!. I will make sure to pick it up then. Good to hear that it plays well.

I'm right at the Raider Matron boss battle, and she dresses extremely similarly to the Dark Elf sorcerous from Dark Alliance. Strange.

The game has been wonderful up to this point. The challenge is right on, and the reward system (as far as cash goes) is perfect. You never, ever have an excess of funds. I like it that way. Just enough money to gradually upgrade my equipment, but not nearly enough to make me an unstopable force early in the game.

I'm going to see what I can't do about this Raider Matron right now. I'm curious to see if I'll be visiting any other towns outside of Carbon. The story has been progressing nicely, and from the looks of things, I'm pretty much finished with the town. One can only hope.

I want Fallout 3, but I have no faith in Black Isle now that all the talent left. I'd rather have no Fallout 3 over shitty Fallout 3.

Actually, Obsidian and Bioware have formed some sort of partnership. Bioware and Obsidian should make it together.

what else was it for?
It looks intersting, no time for new games right now thouhg, maybe after a price drop and a decline in my pos. but gladius jsut had a very good rental from me, so it is gettign docketted after gladius(xb, because my friend who is a strat nut only has an xb)

It's on both the XBOX and PS2.

I just kicked the Matron's ass, followed shortly by the ghoul cult leader. Now I'm following some tart around looking for a key he hid. What fun! :p

The reviewers are not being very kind to this game for the most part.

I'll have to give this a rent just because of what it is. I dun like how your forced to use the 3 character templates(They seem lame too). I always made sure to create my own in the Fallout games. If the Dark Alliance team can chuck create a character in Champions of Norrath, whoever made this should have been able to as well. Right, right?!

Yea, because it's not a Fallout game. It's a fucking Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance TC (or, even worse, a skin).

Fallout Tactics actually was a Fallout game, for what its worth - it had an awesome story and tons of strategy and lots of Fallout-esque stuff within. It wasn't just Jagged Alliance set in the future.

This is upsetting for Fallout fans. But, you know, it took like 12 years for Wasteland to get a sequel, so who knows?

I just remember back in 1998 wondering why Black Isle was releasing a Fallout 2 so damn quick after the first game... but it's a good thing they did, right?

And, also, its no real surprise that Interplay has been bleeding money for the past few years - it's because of shit like this. They don't listen to their fans. What happened to "by gamers, for gamers"?

In the credits of F:BOS, the dev team thanks nma-fallout for all the laughs. Considering all NMA has done is bash the game, that's pretty fucking funny.

It's a shame. The game is great.

Apparently there are three more characters that you can unlock. I'm not too clear on the conditions, as some report all you have to do is beat the game on Normal, while others say you have to complete certain tasks before beating the game, and others still say that completeing certain conditions unlocks them immediately without having to beat the game.

I suppose I'll post the methods once I find out.

my pc awareness is nil. What kind of game were the original fallouts?

I had no trouble running FO2 on XP. I haven't tried FO1 though. I should run through that game again. I love how you can do the whole game without killing anything. Well without directly killing anyone anyway.

You should be able to find it at the discount PC game bins at Target. I've seen FO1 and 2 bundled together for 10 bucks. Fantastic deal.

Alright, I aced the game yesterday (read: this morning at 1:30 am . . . boy, am I tired) and I was very satisfied. The ending is a tiny little clip of FMV, but the story resolves during play, so I didn't see it as all that important.

I did, in fact, unlock all three extra characters for beating the game on Normal, without having done anything super special. The characters are as follows:

Patty: The head of security in the vault at the end of the game.
Rhombus (sp?): A Brotherhood Paladin who ass you rescue from a ghoul cult in Los.

and, the best one yet;

"The Vaultdweller": It's the main character from the first game, but all old and rugged. I doubt it's supposed to fit into the actual time-line of the series, but it's still a really cool extra.

There are other extras that became available to me as well, like screenshots of "pinups" of all of the female characters, concept art, and a God awful music video by a suckass band called "Skin Lab," and the Apocolypse difficulty level. Also, you're given the ability to import your character from the previous game into a new game (which I will be doing for the Apocolypse setting), kind of like a new game plus.

I'd go through and beat it again if Baldur's Gate: DA 2 wasn't released today. It only took about 10 hours, but it was worth it the whole way through. As soon as I wrap up my first play-through of BG: DA2, I'm sure I'll be coming back to this one.

More on the length of the game!

The game will tell you it has three chapters, but considering the chapters each begin with your arrival at a new town, there are actually about 4 1/2 - 5. The third chapter is very long, and you change locations twice, which is why I say what I do.

All this fallout makes me want to start playing Fallout on PC again. I loved the first one so much.
