What the hell? Take it like a man. The guy's played over a thousand games before; this can't be his first loss ever. Then again, it might be his first loss to someone ranked 2000 places lower than him. I suppose he figured the penalty in ranking he gets by dropping might not be as big of a hit as if either of us (or possibly both of us) had won.
As for me, the only asshole online story I have lately comes from THUG, I hate when people boot you seconds after you enter a room. If you didn't want me to join, then use a damn password. A minor annoyance, but it really bugs me.
I lose a lot in PGR2, but I don't care. How else am I to get better than play, lose, and learn? Plus, it can be fun to play a game, win or lose.

In so many other hobbies the good people take the new ones under their wing and show them stuff. Take playing an instrument. Or building a model railroad. Or chess. In those hobbies the more experienced people are, generally speaking, HAPPY to pass down their experience and wisdom to the n00bs.
But has it ever been like that with videogames? I dont think so. Hell on videogames people make FUN of people for being new, as if they weren't there at some point. It's really bizarre. The only time someone ever really helped me was on Kali, when a guy destroyed me in Duke Nukem 3D, like 15-1, and when I told him I only played with the keyboard, he told me that I should learn to use the mouse, and then suggested a good control setup.
But, of course, in most videogames, online especially, you gotta tough it out, fighting against merciless opponents, gaining inch by inch. Hell even when I messed around with some games in the arcade nobody ever gave me any advice. So then of course the next masters of the universe do the same shit.
It's kinda weird, but I guess it stems from the whole antisocial loserworld that so many gamers come from.
And when you're talking about a RANKED game, you of course will get people who pull this type of crap.
My suggestion? No rankings. Rankings are bad, unless you do something extreme like Korly said, and give droppers a flat-out loss. But even then, you're gonna get people who drop just because they don't like you, or its 52-7 in the first quarter and they don't want to try to come back (which would be part of the fun, right?).
Or you could do what Age of Mythology does... there's no lobby. You click "go online", and it automatically searches for a person with your same skill value. Then you play. If you drop like a bitch, you get lowered like you would if you lost.
But in any case, yea, rankings = suck, especially if you give all players the chance to get a ranking (instead of like an official ladder or whatever, like what Battle.net does). I played online games for a hell of a long time and I never missed rankings.
This thread pretty much sums up why I stopped playing online games seriously.
Now I play with friends, or people I know at least remotely.
Anonymity + ranking systems/competitive games = hell
After all this time i'm surprised they don't just give droppers a loss in every online game. And in the chance that your connection honestly shits out on you...tough. It's just one game and if it happens a lot consider it a punishment for having a shit ISP.
