Gran Turismo 3

So.. I've owned this game for almost 2 years now, got it for 10 bucks at a pawn shop for a girl I was dating at the time, so she'd have something to play. We broke up, I shelved it, and forgot I owned it.

I found it, decided to boot it up, it's a loved series, I should really like it. But for some reason, I don't. Now, I don't love racing games, but I find them to be fun at times, whether they are sim or arcade like.

But for some reason, GT 3 just feels like work. Playing the same track over and over and over again just to build up money for one part, and those damn license tests, arg, I'd consider part 4 if they just got rid of those pieces of crap.

What am I missing? Does it get better past the initial 2 or so hours? I'm still stuck using crappy cars, barely making any cash, barely outracing the competition.

Just curious how everyone here feels about it, since I know PGR 2 is well loved, so there's a ton of racing fans here. I'm gonna keep plugging away at it, but so far, I'm a bit mystified over why it's such an "awesome" series.

I love racing games, and have for well over a decade now, that being said, I have yet to have any real fun with the actual racing in any of the Gran Turismo games, as it usually ends up being more of a chore than an enjoyable gameplay experience for me.

Gran Turismo is boring. I'd rather hop in my car and go for a drive.

This is exactly what it feels like. I've been trying to pass the last fucking Rally license test for an hour now. Can't hit a wall, car keeps sliding out, stupid time limit... I was having fun with the rally tests, and then I realized "Hey, Rallisport is nothing but Rally and probably a hell of alot better than this". Thanks to GT 3, now I can go buy a different racing game I'll have more fun with.

I mean, I'm not bad at racing games, just average, but where's the fun in this? Even the customization seems pretty bland at this point, but maybe I just haven't gotten the right cars and parts.

It's not for everyone and I totally understand why some of you get bored. For me it's how realistic the cars look and handle. On that point no other racer has come close to matching the Gran Turismo series. I think it's more of a car enthusiast game than someone who just wants a racing game. I grew up going to car shows, reading motor trend and car & driver and being into cars in general. You can see this in the making of the games, the amount of work they put into every detail of the cars themselves is amazing. If only they would focus all that effort into the AI I think they could call it quits as they would have just made the perfect racing sim.

GT3 does what it sets out to do quite well, but I don't get the appeal in what it sets out to do. I guess if you're a total car nut then I can see the appeal of GT3, but otherwise, I just don't get it.

It's called mainstream racing. To them extra's and tracks = good.To the other racing fans it's all about the design and multiplayer. It's basically the most padded racing game ever that isn't even good multiplayer. Just think VF4 Kumite mode without the crazy part of the game, the vs. mode. This way people will think that they are good at racing games, even if they can't do crap against good human competition.

I think the main draw of the series is it gives you a lot to do and the nice import cars. They should take it to another level and put in some DOA style import models atleast.heh heh

F355 is actually a better driving model for f355's.But that's only one car though. My car in GT3 isn't that well made, it rocks on the street but suck in the game.

As a sim, it's great.

How many other games could you adjust the cars to such as degree as to have cars set up for drifting?

Not a lot.

Not my bag of chips, but it's not a bad game.

I agree with you about F355. I imported it for the DC back in the day, but it was just too sim even for me. What car are you talking about? And what did you mean by padded? I surely hope you don't mean easy. I disagree about the mulitplayer though. I had many sleepless nights racing my brother in GT1, but he was also the one giving me the car & drivers and taking me to the car shows :)

I mean padded as in adding artificial length. Like the backtracking in RE and reusing levels etc. GT3 makes you go through a lot of unneccesary trials in my opinion. Kinda like working in Shenmue or waiting until a certain time in shenmue 1. I drive a 94 acura integra GSR.

Because it's got the shiniest cars. I have no problem with the actual racing portions but I got sick of doing the same stuff over and over and dealing with those horrible license tests back in the first game. If I want to play sim I'll pull out F355, it pulls off the feel of a real car a whole lot better then GT does.

I'm a racing game fan, but I honestly tend to lean more in the arcade direction. The GT series is really the only sim that I've put much effort into. I can see why a lot of people wouldn't like it, but with the points already brought up I think another great element of the series is the game's depth. Do you have any idea how long it takes to get everything in GT3? A very long time. That's another point that the series has over others, the amount of cars. It's starting to become the norm to include a large car roster in racing games, but we're not really there yet.
When you get all of the cars in GT, you're one proud sonofabitch. ;)

heh, I'm not a big fan of GT3 either. One time I was playing a friend's game, and picked out my car (91 RX-7)... I couldn't keep the damn thing on the road, it was rather funny.

Of course, he had it up to 500 hp, if the real thing was 500hp I don't think I could control it either, the tires would never grip.

I'll go play stuntman, then. Realistic physics is ok. Mundane driving tasks are not. It's just dull.

You have to be a car nut/casual gamer who doesn't know any better/graphics whore to stick with it the whole way. Personally, I think the game's excellent and there's nothing out there on the same level as far as consumer auto sims go, but the idiotic amount of repetition required to advance totally kills it after a while. I put a solid 30-40 hours into it before giving up, realising it would eventually take close to 200. I did manage to get my Evo VII up to 520 hp, though; that was kind of cool.

Project Gotham Racing 2....... better. Yes.

whenever i find myself playing GT2 or 3, I eventually realize that i'm not having nearly as much fun as i could be having with something like LeMans on the DC or a good online racer like PGR2..

plus the soundtrack is awful.. (although it's not much better in pgr2)

In defense of the license tests - they exist to teach you how to drive using the controller. Jumping into the game without learning the basics of how a car handles under different circumstances will only lead you to more frustration when you can't win a race without modifing the hell out of you car (which you can't do without winning a race, and so on).

It should be fairly easy to pass almost all the tests on the first or second try with a bronze - with some notable exceptions taking longer (the Viper test on Laguna Seca for example). If you're trying for gold in every test then it's your choice to punish/enjoy yourself.

The game is extremely enjoyable (for me) once you learn to control your car and start to shave off seconds on laptimes. It's like learning to throw a fireball in Street Fighter 2, the game was never the same and you discover there is so much more you can do besides kick and punch. Of course every car is different :p - I can drive my Mitsu 95 GTO but can't handle a rear wheel drive car worth a damn.

Yeah. I like the series and I can't wait for part 4.

Your car isn't in the game.

Bishop, I also grew up reading Motor Trends, Road & Tracks, going to car shows, etc., and with that being said, I still find the GT games to be extremely boring as racing games. As car showcases, they're great, but as a racing title I can enjoy for hours on end for months at a time, the series just doesn't cut it.

If you hate the license test then this game is not for you, because your not going to learn how to drive. And I get the feeling most of you can't control the cars and thats why you dislike the game. It's not easy to pick up I know this. Most people I see play are fine until they have to turn then it's off-roading time! There is a lot of satisfaction for me when I modded a Supra up to 900hp and tuned it so that I could keep it on the road at all times. Unlocking the formula car was also pretty sweet.

As just a pure racing game I couldn't agree more. But I love the Acura NSX and GT is the closest thing I'll ever get to driving one. It's about the cars people. It's about how close they resemble their real life counterparts. I don't know it's kinda like Shenmue I guess.

Nothing. Gran Turismo is the single most overrated Japanese series there is. It even bests Final Fantasy, simply because Final Fantasy used to be good. Gran Turismo never was and never will be. They should pay you to play it, not the other way around.

Nah, if it was like Shenmue, I'd actually ENJOY it. Still though, good to see what you get out of the games.

Na...it doesnt deserve correct spelling.

The GT3 series does allow a ton of customizations, but a lot of them are totaly unrealstic. Lets see a 800hp Civic? On a stock frame? the Torque twist alone would tear the card to shreads, let alone the engine being even able to get close to that.

GT3 looked good for the time, but GT1&2 looked like total ass, even for the time. The shimmering effect on EVERYTHING was sickening.

The car handling is pretty realistic, but PGR2 does that as well, without becoming a chore to play after 2 levels.

Heh, those /s should be read as "or". Going by your posts in this thread, you definitely sound like a car guy. For my part, the thing that made me quit on this game was realizing that I needed a 200 000c car which I would then have to supe up, and that the fastest way to do that would be to race that boring-as-hell Super Speedway for the 50 000th through 60 000th times. And that I'd have to do it again the next time I needed a new car. Then I started looking at those endurance races, and the fact that they take 3 hours, and that there are tons of them, and I just said forget it.

First of all jackass, I never said I was hardcore. I'm not a casual gamer by any means though. I played the hell out of Dream Match back in the day. I just got KOF2K2 and I think it's pretty good compared to 2K and 2K1. I've been here, mostly reading, since the GG days and I can see why a lot of the good posters have left to that other forum.

I gave up on the first one when I got to the endurance races. Two hours each and even then I might end up losing? No thanks. So I never went back to the series. Which sucks because I was way into it up till then.

But it is a sim game; never claimed to be anything else. There's a million arcade racers for people who don't like the tedious side of things.

And the first game most certainly did not look like crap when it was released.

The first game, especially the replays, looked fantastic when it was released, which was nearly five years ago, wow. Seems like just yesterday when I was looking forward to the game quite a bit, then bought it and was let down immensely by the monotony of it. The second game wasn't a huge visual increase over the first, but it didn't need to be, it wouldn't have hurt them to ship the COMPLETE game though. The third game was more like the first, with the reduced number of cars, and unbelievable graphics.

I never said it was my favorite fighter or even a good one. It was more or less a response to the person who said you had to be a casual gamer to enjoy the GT series which I found hard to believe considering most people can't keep the car on the road unless their on a oval track. It's hard to defend games anyway. Some people are going to hate games for the same reasons you love it. I play GT3 quite often and was only try to give some input on why I think some people enjoy the game so much.

A couple of my friends (one's a gamer, the other isn't) both really like the GT series and during some conversation I asked them why. They struggled for a while, trying to come up with reasons, and we all eventually agreed that it's not a very good game but it does appeal to people who really like consumer cars.

Hype and name recognition does not make a good game bad. I know it's not cool to enjoy mainstream titles, but I feel like in general most people are only going to scratch the surface of what GT3 has to offer and probably stick to the Arcade mode and 2 player battle. Personally I don't know anyone who has beat the beginner league and that's only around 10% of the game.

Agreed. GTA3 is still good, and GT3 still sucks, even with name recognition.

Mech, that makes me feel much better, as the most fun I've had with the game aside from washing the cars (nice little feature, by the way) has involved just looking at the stunning cars in still shots and stuff.

For me, there's a slide bar in my head. On one side is "fun," on the other is "realism." The further you slide it to "realism," the less "fun" the game is for me. Although I greatly enjoy PGR2 when I thought I would hate it. Go figure.

I love the game. If you get bored of certain races don't do them, no one is forcing you to. I've never bothered with the endurance races because they'd get tedious to me, but that is no reason to not play the game at all. Most of the races are only 3 or 4 laps and a lot fun. GT is hailed because it does so many things right, while many other games only get a small portion of thier game to be as good. Formost this includes handling, each car handles differently based on many different aspects of the car like drive wheels, weight, power. You can master fwd and then slide off the track at every turn when you grab your first rwd. The different handling characteristics had never been so acuratly modeled before GT came out. Secondly is the car linup, it covers the whole spectrum and had far more cars than most any racer before it. When you consider these two points the variety is truly amazing, everyone will have thier favorites and thier own driving style. Finally there are the tracks, which are a matter of personal taste, but i find them very well designed and full of variety. They really let you push yourself to shave seconds by trying to take turns just a bit faster or on a slightly different line. It has the best representation of Laguna Seca i've ever seen. I love that course.

What's funny is that even car magazines are covering the development of GT4. It means a lot to people that it was made with the comprehensiveness and attention to detail that people put into thier own real cars. Other games may match it in specific categories, but i have yet to see one match it at all levels.

I was just joking with Yoshi's quote. Relax. I love GTA3. And Mech, if you friends can't tell you why they like a game it's pretty safe to assume they bought it because it was cool to buy. Personally those aren't the opinions I would seek to decided if a game is good or not.

No, one of them bought it because they're both car nuts. One of them (the non-gamer) spends all of his free time doing one of two things: biking the city or looking up info on all the latest cars. He doesn't own any videogame systems, doesn't own the game, and really isn't very good at any games at all (although he loves to think he's great as racing games even though he's never beaten me). The other one just loves to read car magazines and check them out whenever he gets the chance; when it comes to games he's extremely jaded and loves to complain about everything (except GT3 and DDR :wtf: ).

I don't listen to their opinions for games I buy, I was just bringing up the only two people I know in RL who enjoy GT3. It's the UFC of racing games.

Gran Turismo 3 is an awesome game once you get through the learnign curve and acquire some kick ass cars. Especially once you get the F1 cars, the racing is awesome. At first I admit, the game is pretty boring and slow. You just gotta stick with it. I have it 80-85% completed.

It's not as good as KOF98, though. It's pretty half-hearted, even for a dream match. But it's not bad.

KOF is terrible. I've said nothing but that for a long time now. The series has sucked since the novelty wore off maybe five years ago and now every fucking game is exactly the same and looks like shit because of the MVS technology.

Also the character designs are shit.

KoF is strictly a B grade fighting game at best. If it's not as good as KoF '98, it's shit.

There's a pretty big differnce between a Type-R and a GSR. I don't know what you mean by "kit" though in the game. The older Honda Type-R and newer Acura Type-R are both the best FWD vehicles in the game. Just from the time I've spent in GT1-3 that car has been one of the best to drive and handles like a dream, but I've never driven the car in real life. The Type-R is stripped down for racing hence the "R". It didn't come with AC or even a radio. It shed a lot of weight, upped the hp, and has a more aggressive suspension for the track.

I know the differences between a type r and my car. I'm a car nut myself. I have driven a type R before. I drive a GSR and my dad owns one of the older model integras. I know what my GSR can do on the road and I know the type-r can do everything better. If you don't know what a kit AKA bodykit is, then you're not a car nut.

Anyways, no one is saying that GT is hard. It's just tedious. Leanring how to drive those cars are pointless cause I can beat my GT fans friends in races no problem and I don't even play it really.Not with the integras though. :D

Anyways, no one is saying that GT is hard. It's just tedious. Leanring how to drive those cars are pointless cause I can beat my GT fans friends in races no problem and I don't even play it really.Not with the integras though. :D

Yeah I know what a "body" kit is, but there isn't an Integra in GT3 with one. That's why I was confused about your statement. I just think it's weird that it's my been my favorite car in the series because of it's handling. I've never driven one, but I've wanted to own one really bad. Unfortunately I'm about 6'4" and this just doesn't work well with the Integra. I've read alot about the car and how great it handles and I found it to be one of the best handling cars in the game. I dont know.

Lol, thanks for the compliment. I personally really enjoy the game. I am a car nut however. I can see how people who aren't really into cars would have more fun with arcade racers such as Daytona and Ridge Racer etc. This game, however, is SO deep it's incredible. I have no idea how many hours I've put into it, but it's in the 100+ range. I have the beginner and intermediate all 100% complete with all race wins. I'm close to finishing advanced and have completed many endurances, rallies, and arcade races.

Ok, the endurances are BORING if you have mastered GT3 because you will have smoked the field early and have to spend upwards of an hour completing the race. Yes, the game is mainstream as in it's sold through the roof. However, this does not mean it's not "hardcore" by any means. The physics engine these guys (and girls) created is very close to real life, and that is quite "hardcore" :cool:

most of the people who don't like gran turismo are just crap at playing it. including me. but i've seen good players playing and it sure looks like fun. I just prefer to stick to racing games where braking is optional.

I have heard that car with the 5 speed was a good performer for the money. Too bad they don't make them anymore. I wish they would have included that and the V6 mustang in the series.

Yeah I'm positive the older type R has a kit cause it doesn't look like that. It looks better than the new ones in some ways, so I assumed there was a kit on it.

The thing that killed me about GT3 was the walls. That's it, the walls. The physics model was neat, the cars handled in a reasonably diverse way (given how many cars there are in the game) - but being able to bounce off of walls destroyed any realistic feel the game had for me.

I'd focus on trying to drive well, smoothly, but I was always conscious of the fact that scraping a wall wouldn't hurt me that much, and that sometimes a bounce off of a wall made more sense than trying to follow some line through the curve.

Putting bouncy walls in GT3 just didn't make sense - it'd be like putting a Ninja Ball in All Star Baseball 2001, or, I don't know, red shells in Ferrari F355.

Ya, it is pretty quick. It has a 3.8 liter V6 that has been around for decades, but has been refined many times over. It's rated 200 horsepower and 225 pound feet of torque, but this has been proven to be underrated by people who have dynoed it at more like 235-240 tq. It has fooled more than one person I've driven around into thinking it's a V8. Definitely plenty of power to get in trouble with! :evil:

It is true that the highway patrol in many states has started using Z28 Camaros, the V8 version, as cruisers. Now those are just plain fast. They are rated at 310-315 horsepower, but infact many people have dynoed them at numbers more like 325-330 horsepower, so they are underrated as well.

YES!!! I'm am in agreeance with you 100% When I found out there would be no damage in GT4, I was quite disappointed. I know they would have had trouble gettin the "ok" from many car manufacturers, but why not have a series of races with the car munfacturers that would be ok with having there car's damaged? Who knows, GT4 has recently been delayed, maybe they are adding it!!??

I fully agree and am damned glad they're fixing that for GT4. Not sure if that will convince me to buy it but it's a good start.

The mustang was outselling the camaro and firebird combined for the longest time by a lot and it became pretty uncool after the 80's to drive one. GM made the right choice, but I still liked the car.

I think I read that GT4 does punish you for hitting the wall "hard". Like for 10 seconds you can only go 50 mph or something like that. Online play should makes things interesting too.

I believe that reduced speed thing happens if you try to drive aggresively. I'm going to have to play the game to see how this feature ends up being, but in theory...no sir, I don't like it.

Better dmg modeling and fees to repair body dmg would solve the 'I-fear-no-wall' problem in GT. But that dmg better hurt the AI cars as well.
