Was Kurt Cobain Straight or Not?

Kurt Cobain once kissed his bassist on stage because he wanted to make a statement. He was angry at homophobes. Does this make him a homosexual?

In Europe, men kiss. On old shows really "hip" and loose cool guys would occasionally kiss another guy as a joke. Example: On the episode of M.A.S.H. where Trapper John was leaving for home, he didn't get to say good bye to his friend Hawkeye. So, he had the charachter Radar O' Riley give Hawkeye a kiss for him on the mouth as a last joke.

I think you can kiss a guy and not be homosexual because of all of this. But I may be wrong. Time to put it to a vote.

Remember, this is not a stupid question because the example I gave of he M.A.S.H. episode was aired for public viewing when you really didn't see guys doing that on telivision. Or anywhere else, for that matter. What is acceptable straight behavior and what is not?

If you want to start a thread talking about the homophobic culture of the United States in comparison to other countries, that's fine.

But no, you chose Kurt Cobain because you know a lot of the people in the age demographic who frequent TNL are or were fans of Nirvana. You wanted to start some shit by basically making the allusion that Kurt Cobain could have been gay.

Good input. True, you don't have to sell yourself to let people know you are mellow. Although a kissing booth scenario is not prostitution, the principle is somewhat correct. I certainly wouldn't want underaged people to feel they have to sell themselves to be politically correct.

True, that. I was not being a good salesman when I started this thread. Frankly, I thought that any thread with the title, "Is it okay to kiss a guy?" would be immediately moved to FC. The mods have to be carefull about what is posted I guess. Or something.

In fact, most of them were just snatched up from the same scene. Really, the best thing Kurt did was get influence by some great bands from before his time and make some decent music with it.

I like Nirvana, but I don't think they really influenced that scene all too much. The other big 2 Seattle bands were already signed and had CD's close to Neverminds Release Date.

Nirvana: Nevermind September 1991
Soundgarden: Badmotorfinger Oct 1991

Maybe they had a little to do with Alice In Chains who released Dirt in late September 1992, but that was minimal at best.

Did you join these boards only for the riveting Sound Off discussions? I'm really very curious as to why you joined a video game message board when you seem to have zero interest in video games and little knowledge about them? My friends and I play video games all the time. Soon we will be playing online and will quite possibly give you and your crew a sound thrashing in Gran Trismo IV. Just because I don't post doesn't mean I don't lurk.

Besides, Nirvana WAS huge. Once Smells like Teen Spirit hit the air, and that damn video came on, everything was different. All relics of 1980s, like shitty hair music and what not, was killed. The lead singer of Poison I think, admitted as much. Nirvana ended hair band's music careers. For that, I think we all owe Cobain and company a great deal.

Sure, Nirvana put Subpop on the map and lead to a lot of the industry types going up there, but they didn't really make it big until Nevermind was released.

Hence, when they were big (known to most of us), the other bands were well established.

Personally, I rank them:

Nirvana Best quality for quantity.
Soundgarden, slightly behind thereof.
Alice In Chains, Great at their peak, but spotty and STP like in their output.
Pearl Jam, not bad but not for me.

I'd rate Pearl Jam higher than Soundgarden, but that's just me

When Pearl Jam's good, they're one of the best bands ever. When they're bad, well... they're just bad.

The problem is that they aren't good nearly enough of the time, especially today. All of their albums has had these unbelievably amazing songs in them, but there's only like 1 or 2 on each one.

The best Pearl Jam stuff blows away Soundgarden. But, on the whole... I dunno. Soundgarden's better.

I agree, but I think Pearl Jam is better than Soundgarden overall. Their good songs are better than Soundgarden's best songs. Not to take anything away from them... ranking bands isn't my favorite thing to do.

Sonic Youth's breakthrough album was Daydream Nation, which was released in 1988. Same with the Pixies (Surfer Rosa). So...

Pearl Jams' less heavy hitting stuff usually has something underlying that you have to pick up after a few listens of the song/album in question. A LOT of people hated No Code, but that album had some truly killer tracks on it. Present Tense, Lukin, Who You Are, In My Tree. Just some examples.

Soundgarden was a killer band too, and put out some truly amazing albums, but their pool dried up, thats why they broke up. PJ is still making and releasing good music. MVS is somehow against thier "pinko views" which usually end up making vast amounts of money for charities, but whatever. If you've ever seen PJ live ,you know how fun it is to see Eddie with a bottle of wine dancing around.

If anyone remembers Temple of the Dog, [Hunger Strike], Cornell recently came to a PJ show and did a couple 'Slave tunes and a couple Temple songs with Eddie and the boys. Since Matt Cameron is on drums in PJ now it was the same backing band from all those years ago with their same vocalist. The recording is being released to ten club, so keep your eye on sharing services for it.

Cobain definitely broke the Seattle scene, without him you wouldn't know who SG, or PJ was I speculate. He broke the stranglehold Mike Jackson and Whitesnake had on the world. Pearl Jam is my favourite grunge band by far, but they didn't have the impact that Nirvana did on the scene. Cobains' sexuality? It's none of my business, but I do know that he wore dresses while preforming, and in the In Bloom vid. I think Cobain was trying to tear down some borders.

In the early 90s AIDS was the big scare you know? Leading out of the eighties, and then people like Magic Johnson, Easy E, etc etc contracting AIDS. That brought the gay community in the spotlight, and a lot of people feared it. I think with that kiss, and the dresses and whatnot, Cobain was trying to bring the people together through the only way he knew - his music. Since it was already breaking down musical borders, why not try other borders? It gave the straight people who idolized him something to think about, and the gay people someone to relate to a bit more I guess?

Anyway to wrap it up, I'm going to say that I've had acctual mature conversations with DiffX about homosexual issues such as gay marrige, and he wasn't condecending from what I recall, him and I have our sparring matches, but you shouldn't put words in his mouth. And no, Cobain wasn't gay, he just wanted some peace, man.

Soundgarden was big, but independent. They had been on the scene since like 84 and still hadn't broke out... It only took Nirvana 2 albums to break, first Bleach, which didn't do much, then Nevermind. That's more than Cornell and the boys did, and I love my Sg....

My Cousin got to see SG, PJ, and Neil Young in concert once, lucky bastard.
