Dreamcast 2D Hi-Res and Lo-Res

There was a thread here a while back linking to a Fanitsu thread about arcade conversions to Dreamcast and Saturn, and true low res games and the like were discussed. I wanted to check out that information but both threads seem to be gone.

So I might as well ask afresh now. Which low resolution 2D games run in proper low res? I've just checked the different video modes on Third Strike and the difference is remarkable so this stuff really makes a difference. Gunbird 2 and Bangai-O kick up stink when you run them in VGA so I'd guess they're low res? How about the likes of Marvel vs Capcom and Last Blade 2?

I'm pretty sure all 2D games on the DC use smaller sprites that are then scaled up, which = ass on VGA. At least the fighters.

There was definitely resolution discussion in one of those Atomiswave threads at TFP. I believe the mighty Recap was the initiator of the threads. I hope that helps.

Apparently JoJo's Bizarre Adventure doesn't support VGA, so maybe it uses a low-res mode? I can't remember from when I tried it...the TV I had back then was too small for me to notice.

High-res:

Vampire Chronicle for Matching Service
Mars Matrix
Giga Wing

Incidentally, Dodonpachi Dai-Ou-Jou and King of Fighters 2000 on PS2 both run in true low-res modes, while Metal Slug 3 uses a high-res mode.

Guilty Gear X and MvC2 and the CvS games look fine in VGA.

How do you change video modes in Third Strike? Gamefaqs lists two ways, hold L and Y or hold L and start while the game boots (I think that's the two). I coulddn't tell if either of them were working.

You're correct. I didn't really notice too much of a difference though. Then again I play on a TV, not VGA

Didn't know the first 2 KoFs were Lo Res.

Hold Start + L until the Capcom logo in Third Strike to get the authentic low resolution mode. Normal mode has this bad swimming effect if you look closely but the low resolution mode is perfectly still.

I think Black Matrix A/D is low res. I'll check later.

I tried the hold L and Start thing, and it didn't look any different than the default setting. Am I supposed to go an option menu? I was playing in VGA.
