Custom Robo

I know there are other threads about this, but none were labeled official, so nyah!

My store just got the new GC demo disk today, and Custom Robo is available in a playable format.

This game does what Gotcha Force tried, and failed miserably doing. It's great. The controls are tight, the customization is in depth, and the visuals are smoking.

It was amazing just how much was available on the demo. Several opponents, as well as several arenas, and several weapons to customize your robo with. Several body types to choose from, too. I stood in front of the GC kiosk for a solid two hours just trying the different gun and body combinations. Trying to discover which ones worked the best. The arenas have destructable pieces, and some of them are booby trapped.

I'll be picking this up when it comes out. It eats the stinky Gotcha Force for breakfast.

I'm looking forward to it, as I'm getting a distinctly Robo Pit vibe from the game, which is good. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to play the demo of it.

I'll probably check this title out when it's released. I really wanted to play the N64 Custom Robo. Does this one have RPG elements like the N64 one?

Yes, it is still an RPG of sorts. But some of the characters are so gay(in the literal sense) that calling them gay would somehow be an understatement.

Aye, I'm excited to try this too.

And I still wanna try Gotcha Force (regardless of the lackluster stuff I've heard about it).

I've yet to find a copy of that in stores, did it get a mega-low print run or something?

Ah, very cool. I had no luck finding it today at either Best Buy or one of the EBs in my area. How much does the game usually sell for new?

Fourty dollars.

But I'm telling you, it isn't worth twenty.

I'd consider picking it up for ten.

Twenty is about the price I was thinking about spending on it, and the game looks really interesting in theory, and in screens. If I ever find it for that price, I'll snatch it up. Thanks for the info, CV.

dont listen to the madman here jeremy, its not as bad as he is making it out to be, but i wouldnt go full price either, i have no regrets on my buy, but look for it cheaper. as for custom robo, is that the overall new demo disc? if so i will have to get some holy water and enter the dark recesses of walmart to try it out (our eb has no gc demo kiosk, and therefore sucks, i have mentioned that, right?) I am very interested in custom robo, does it compare to something like armored core, as far as customization goes? you mention guns, are there close combat weapons too?

Every shot I've seen of gameplay is shown in an isometric view. Is that the gameplay view, or is it more like Virtual On?

CV, just for the sake of arguement, and for informed purchases, what issues did you have with the game?

Loved the N64 games, haven't actually gotten around to playing the GBA one yet, but this one is a definite purchase.

jeremy, the main complaints with gocha force is that the voice acting is really bad, im not talking resident evil bad, i mean kids putting no emotion into their nonsensical lines whatsoever bad,and the writing is worse than an episode of beyblade. its best to just ignore the story entirely and focus on the game, which is not as deep as virtual on at all, but each charcter does have a aprticular play style, none are particularly deep, but you can string together a pretty good team of gocha borgs, thought there are soem that are uber and some that are bench material, thats the best complaints i can think of, collecting nuts should check it out, but the lack of a cmpelling story, or objectives other than clear the field really hamper replay, luckily im an unlockable nut, so i enjoyed it, but those are the main complaints.

Damian79 thought it prudent for me to post this, since I started the thread, but I told him he'd get the credit for bringing it to my attention.

If there are close combat weapons, they weren't present in the demo, but there is a melee charge-type attack.

It isn't like Armored Core, as you don't really design the body of the mech. You choose a body type, but you customize it's stats, weapons, and color. This sound pretty basic, but once you see how certain weapons work as a team better than certain others, the customization aspects go through the roof, and the strategy involved with outfitting your mech is phenominal.

frostwolf, thanks for the info, voice acting doesn't bother me too much, and it's a mech game, so a plot doesn't matter to me much either. Just so long as the game is enjoyable, my money will be well spent.

CV, I'm someone who can enjoy Pit Fighter, honest to God man, odds are, I can enjoy this game.

Dude, I like EVERYTHING! When I say a game is bad, it's really freaking bottom-of-the-barrel bad. As in "no redeeming qualities whatsoever" bad.

Alright, maybe it isn't that bad. But it's pretty freaking bad.

Is it me or does this look more 3d visually than anything else on a screen? I always thought that everything looked flat on a screen because it is a flat image. I mean compare the 3d render art and the pic, there seems to be actual depth.

Could these screens be photoshooped or something?

So it is just me. Good, I was kinda freaked out.

Those Robos look hella cool. It's a pity the battlegrounds look like warmed over shit. Ah well, an easily overlookable offense.

Yeah, some of the backgrounds are simply static, but others are destructable, and others still are trapped. Like one of the levels in the demo version is a giant conveyer belt that slowly but surely moves you toward a vat of lava.

Most of them are just static, though.

I played the demo a bit the other day. Wasn't really impressed. Seemed kind of mindless to me.

The newest issue of GI has a review for it, and the newest Nintendo Power has an in-depth preview and a neat fold-out poster for it.

GI panned it pretty hard, gave it a 5 something and said that the story mode sucks and the arenas are horrible.

Based off of the demo... those arenas ARE very shitty.

They just made it out to be a very shallow game, but said it would have done better if it was only online (which I tend to agree with).

Game Informer is not something you can take seriously. Go go hypergrind, BMX XXX, Blood Rayne and Smashing Drive all scored 7+. While Beach Spikers: 5, FF:CC : 7, Star Wars Bounty hunter: 5,

The fact remains that at least from what I played in the demo, Custom Robo is bland and uninspiried. In a game where the whole point is to battle, having static, boring, really shitty levels kills the game completely.

Just the fact that GI is the first mag I've gotten that has reviewed it, and they basacially took what I thought about the demo and said it expounded into the entire game.

I mean, the customization and the robots and weapons are fantastic, like Virtual On except more fun to me, imo. But those levels, ugh, it's like they just got lazy.

There's a second opinion review in GI which gives it a 7.75, as opposed to the main one, which gives it a 5.75.

Even so, with all the good word about the first game I was really hyped about this one. When GI is off, most of the time it's because they scored a game too high.

GMR's newest issue (which I just got in the mail) gives the game an 8/10.

The screens that have been posted seem...off...from my time w/the demo. The detail is (too?) fantastic but the camera is zoomed in a lot more than when I played it.

This was one of the major probs w/it IMO. Cool gadgets and whatnot but w/the camera pulled so far back you can't really tell what all you're shooting (but you CAN see what your enemy is doing and you can make out the lvl as a whole - unlike VOOT).

Customization looks promising, even more so than the original Armored Core. On a side note, the demo movie is very cool (check out those explosions).

I just toyed around with the demo myself and I had a good time with it.
I don't know if I want to spend forty bucks on buying Custom Robo when it comes out, but it definitally seems like a great party game if everyone playing has their own robot to do battle with (Kind of how Pokemon is great if you know other people that are playing it as well, but kind of stale and pointless if you're never going to link up).
