Anyone know which store in NYC, does PS2 modchip installs? And for how much?
Penguin Village inside Elizabeth Center does them for about $100-125. J & L does them for i think $140. might be less. those prices are off, but i know they're around $100+.
The store in Penguin Village is called Evo, it's a floor down from the entrance, and its prices are always better than J&L.
Affirmative, Penquin is definitely the way to go (now called Evo as Burg commented). I went to them years ago to mod my PlayStation so I could play Tobal 2. Their handiwork is very solid.
:wtf: That is one giant sig.
Ya'know, two fucking mods posted in this thread and not one of then mentioned it...Quote:

p.s. I am not your board nanny. please address your problems in feedback or send PM to the designated moderators of Gaming Discussion.
I don't see a giant sig.
WITNESS...THE INVISIBLE HAND!
Bahn: Was it my imagination or did there used to be a second gaming store in Penguin Village? Back in the late 90s I mean. Either that, or did Evo move?
That second gaming store, was J&L (located on the bottom floor near what is now known as Evo.
...and then they moved.
Edit: man, those invisible hands are quite legendary around these parts.
That makes sense, then. I guess J&L had to jack up its prices to pay the rent hike.
They've always been higher than Evo even before the move.
there were about 3 gaming stores down there. one right next to the elevator, the one behind it which used to be J&L, and Evo behind the elevators. it really didn't make much sense for J&L to have two stores located on the same street. Evo is fine where it is, since it's been there forever, but i would've liked seeing them move into a bigger lot. whatever works for them though.
there's definitely no doubting that.Quote:

I recommend stepping away from the squalid wastelands of Chinatown videogame stores and arcades and finding better things to do in the world's greatest city. That goes for the whole lot of ya.
I'm pretty sure I got my PSX modded at the one right off the elevator.Quote:

It'd kinda hard to get your PS2 modded at the Met.Quote:

This is like, a video game discussion thread. Shocking news indeed that the conversation veered towards video games. (that doesn't mean the sentiment is nessessarily wrong, it just means this is really a inane place to post it). Its like going to a drag race and telling everyone there to grow up and stop worrying about cars.
It's definitely depressing... but what can you do? It's not like one can force them to get cultured.Quote:

J & L was always more expensive but sometimes Penguin was sold out out of a particular game--you were compelled to put down the $5~$10 more (Looks at JAP Marvel Vs. Capcom 2). The third store popped up around 1998 I believe and it was run by an ex Penguin employee I think. I got my moded DC there and they often undercut Penguin. It truly was a gamer's market down there. There's nothing like being in an import gaming store with a huge selection and also seeing people try out the new games. I haven't been down there in years--it was so sad to see just Penguin(Evo) down there.Quote:

Personally id say your better off (and itll be cheaper) to ship your PS2 to Matt and have him do it
back before i got mine modded by Matt JnL wanted $180 to mod a PS2
I believe this news!
(Been wanting to say that for a while...)
Chinatown Fair is the only decent arcade available. It hosts some of the best competition in a variety of 2D/3D fighting games such as CVS2, MVC2, Soul Calibur 2, etc. Perhaps the only complaint newcomers would have with the place is its infamous stench (and I don't mean from the building itself) ;)Quote:

Fucking shit, change that sig, clownboat.
Hey I'm not knocking the Chinatown Fair--if I want my ass kicked in a game of tic tac toe by a chicken I know where to go--and I enjoy the joyless indifference of the money change guy. Of course there's always great competition there but It just saddens me that a lot of the fighting games there are over 5 years old now :\ .Quote:

And most of the games that are naturally dated get a LOT more traffic than much of whatever is currently available from arcade manufacturers.
Hanzo, penquin village doesn't have a "sign" on it as it were to recognize it. Basically you go into Penquin Village and it's the only gaming store left located past the bottom floor as highlighted by a few folks in this thread.
Chinatown Fair...you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villany...Quote:

I paid alittle over half of that for a duo, shipping included.
$100 or more for just an install is just fucking crazy. i know of places that sell duo, magic and ultra chips plus installs for $80. dms and install for $120.
I charge a lot less than $120 even for a DMS. Shipping almost makes up the difference, though.
Where else to get an install? If u add shipping charges to send it to you, it's the same right?
If I gather correctly, they're charging $100+ for the sole installation - something Matt charges $30 for. (assuming he hasn't changed his rates). Either that or the installation and a severely overpriced chip.
it's for the chip and install. Can anyone do it for cheaper - shipping?
Even so, paying that much for a Magic chip is silly. Or paying that much for them to install it (whichever they say is the bulk of the cost). So.. I guess what it comes down to is that you can get the most advanced chip for a little under/equal to that with Matt. Or, perhaps Matt could get you a Magic if you don't need all the fancy stuff, and that would be cheaper, I imagine.
It's $35 now. Still a lot better than most places I've seen! Generally you'll get charged between $45 and $60 for installation - $100 is really out of line.
If I do it, the total cost to you (including shipping both ways) will be between $79 and $119. If you're just looking to play imports and have an older system (39001 or earlier), the Magic 3.1 is fine - it does the job well and is really cheap. The more expensive chips are handy if you want to play foreign DVDs, experiment with homebrew stuff, or have a 50001 system.
Assuming the shop is buying in bulk, they're probably paying $12-15 per chip. That's a nice profit margin they've got.Quote:

Matt's got a stellar reputation around here, and while I haven't done business with him yet, I have no doubts about sending off two rare systems for him to work on. If you can live without your console for however long his turnaround time is, I'd say you'd be much better off sending it to him.
I have had him mod my PS2 and i can say id be more than happy to send another system to him for modding
