Pokemon Colosseum

I realize now that I'm the only one around here who actually gives a flying rat's ass about Pokemon, but I'm not going to let all of you jerks ruin my good time.

Pokemon Colosseum is due out in March (the 22nd to be exact), and it includes not only a battle mode, which was the entire premise of both N64 Pokemon Stadiums, but it will also include a "scenario" mode, which is a stand alone RPG type adventure with new characters.

If you're interested, a preorder of the game will secure you a special bonus disk, not unlike the one found in the Mario Kart: Double Dash!! LE package (only this disk isn't included in the game case; you get it right away), and on this disk is a preview of the game itself, a preview of the new straight-to-video/DVD movie "Jirachi: Wish Maker" or something like that, and the coup de grace, Jirachi himself, in downloadable form. All you have to do is connect your GBA to the GC (complete with either a copy of Pokemon Ruby or Sapphire), and you obtain, with zero effort, this super powerful Steel-Psychic type Pokemon, with which you can kick the living Hell out of all comers.

There's an interview with a few of the developers HERE that explains some of the game modes, and some story bits involved with the scenario mode.

Now I want that demo. I'll have to sweet talk the manager of my local GS. :D

Or I could probably get you one, free of charge. Ask your local GS manager, first, though. I don't want to have to ship to Puerto Rico without good reason. ;)

i'll play pokemon again when it's a full fledged console RPG. why has that not happened yet? Hell, GC should have launched with it and everyone but Nintendo realises this.

Hey, man, I don't know what you're looking for, but the scenario mode takes place in a new region of the Pokemon universe, wherein you travel from town to town, traversing the wilds while searching out and "snagging" up Pokemon in order to do battle with them in stadiums, all the while seeking to undermine the plans of an evil organization, all in 3D.

That sounds an awful lot like a "full fledged console RPG," if you ask me.

Little? It's supposed to be a fairly good used RPG, with some new ideas and features thrown in.

The colliseum is what most of the kids will buy it for, anyways,

It took 1 1/2 years and 180 programmers and contributors to develop this game. I doubt the scenario mode is just "thrown in."

But how long is it? I guess that's my prime factor. That and the fact that i don't have the GBA games to import any pokemon with, so can i still play it?

I want Pokemon Chartreuse GC, where i can start from the beginning and play a full 40+ hr game without a GBA.

everyone knows the coloseum games were cash runs, why keep the name if this is a full featured rpg?

I should go read a preview or something...

You can play the RPG, it comes with all it's own pokemon and I don't think you can import any into the RPG mode.

But the colliseum mode probably won't be as fun... but you can take the pokemon you catch in the RPG mode and use them in the colliseum.

As far as I know, the RPG mode makes hereto unobtainable Pokemon finally available. Certain Pokemon such as those created exclusively for some of the movies, as well as ones created specifically for the e-Reader CCG (Sandstorm and Dragon expansions).

I cannot comment on length, but I hope it's at least 30 hours long.

That's the impression I got. I like where they're going, but the fact it's basically a sideshow to the normal Pokemon Stadium type stuff is certainly disappointing.

All the GB Pokemon RPGs have been a blast to play ('cept rehashes like Yellow and what not)... I look forward to the day Nintendo releases a Pokemon game of that quality on a home console (not holding my breath though).

If it is indeed a full RPG, then I will have to get it. I love the GBA Pokemons, mainly because they don't try so hard to be RPGs. I have little time and patience for text-heavy, menu-ridden traditional RPGs, and the Pokemon games are a refreshing change of pace.

It makes me happy to have a new GC game to buy come out of the blue. Animal Crossing was the same way for me.

You can't just go capture some pokemon either, you only get new pokemon by stealing the dark ones.

Outside of only being able to steal the dark ones, that wrte-up sounds like every other Pokemon game, ever. It's never been overtly complex. Just nice and simple, capture the Pokemon, train them, and kick some ass.

Even still, I'm really looking forward to the game.

I have nothing to say about this except fuck you Nintendo for choosing a name that 95% of the internet will misspell.

It's definitely less involving than the GB Pokemon RPGs. Not trying to hamper your enthusiasm (I too, enjoy the Pokemon series), but I think it's worth pointing out the RPG mode definitely isn't as good as it could be.

Still a step in the right direction though.

I think it's a huge step in the right direction. World maps, town visitation, story, and Poke-fighting. Even if it isn't as complex as a Final Fantasy or a Star Ocean, it's still an RPG. And for this I am thankful.

That's where all this enthusiasm is coming from. Not only is it a move to make Pokemon much more big than it already is, but it's such a huge, well executed (if certain reviews are correct) move to boot. I really can't wait. :D

Well I'll be keeping an eye on this thread once it hits, to hear impressions about that game mode. Getting some more fun out of my Pokemon Ruby cartridge would be pretty cool actually :)

And I'll just ask this here... any word on a U.S. release of the Red/Blue remakes for the GBA that Japan got (or is getting? Not sure...)

I don't know about any Red/Blue remakes, but I doubt I'd buy them if they crossed over. Though . . . they are sure to implement some kind of premium, like newer Pokemon, or Ruby/Sapphire -- Red/Blue connectivity.

Hmph. But I've already played through them once. I don't know if simply adding to the roster of existing Pokemon is enough to get me to buy the game again.

Let's see... been announced for the US sometime in 2004.

Pokemon Colliseum is compatible with it. Also Ruby and Sapphire.

Updated graphics, new islands to go to, 2 on 2 battles (which are in ruby / sapphire), be a female trainer, new mini games, new movesets, a move tutor.

That's all I could dig up, at the moment.

MORE: About 200 pokemon to catch, also. And the new islands are three secret islands with new quests.

Hmmm. I don't know if that's enough to convince me. It might be, but not right now it isn't. I'll wait until I hear some more about it.

Well, the pokemon you can get in this one are the only way to use them in coliseum. Ruby / Saphhire, Coliseum, and Fire / Green all have it's unique pokemon on it. Basacially, owning all three is the only way to get every pokemon.

I know totodile, chikorita, and cyndaquil are only availble to get through Coliseum.

The disc you get when you preorder gives you a special pokemon AND updates the berry program to avoid the one-year glitch.

Well, technically, yea, cause certain pokemon are on fire that aren't on green, and vice versa.

But in the end, instead of just release the pokemon on E-Reader cards, or something else, you gotta buy Coloseum AND Fire or Leaf to get most of the pokemon.

Which is simply following the typical Pokemon trend. The only Pokemon made available on e-Reader cards are the one that aren't present in the games to begin with (Mew, Latios and Latias, Jirachi).

I know some people who will buy all of the karts so they can catch all of the Pokemon. I'm not one of them. Usually, I'll take a look at the Poke-roster and choose the game whose Pokemon I like the best (Red/Blue, Gold/Silver), or I'll choose the game based on the legendary Pokemon I like the best (Gold/Silver, Ruby/Sapphire).

However, like I've mentioned earlier, I've already played through Red/Blue, and as far as I can see, there isn't any incentive to go out and buy it again, even if I can't catch all the Pokemon if I don't.

I'll get it just to transfer the pokes to the Coliseum to use them, too many awesome pokemon in red / blue and silver / gold that were left out of ruby and sapphire and coliseum, and this will be the only way to get em.

Plus it's a given, at this point, that Best Buy would stock them for 24.99, so we can all get it for 20.

I guess $20 isn't so bad. Especially considering that GS and EB are guaranteed to sell them at $35.

I find it funny that we are the only two even interested in this game, and we are the only two continuing the conversation.

Just haven't gotten my Jirachi yet because of limited funds, but that should be changing real soon.

I've noticed we always end up in the same topics being the only people interrested in a game, heh.

Well, the manager at my local GS wouldn't budge until I put a pre-order (which I can't since I'm broke), so no Jirachi for me. I will pre-order before it gets here but I wanted to go through Ruby with him now. Dammit!

I haven't touched a single Pokemon game since... Hell, 5th grade for me. Red/Blue and my import Green I got from some nerd down the street for a few bucks.

I'm almost, almost interested.

actually its no secret the other assistant managers PC was beyond fubared i whiped everything reinstalled his os installed some anit virus stuff and some other things and he didnt have any cash but he said his mom who works at TRU had a copy of ruby that they had given her a while back and he said here have this

yeah im interested in Colosseum, i didnt think i would be i used to make fun of pokemon but back before they came out our Nintendo Rep had put Sapphire in our demo unit and since we never actually use it as a demo unit i borrowed it and played through saphire for the hell of it and well to my surprise i actually had alot of fun playing it so im interested in Colosseum now

I found out a bit more. The RPG is the main part of the game, and it's about 30 hours worth of playtime (WOO-HOO! :D ). It plays just like the Game Boy Pokemons, i.e. traveling from town to town fighting trainers and raising Pokemon. There are some significant differences, though. For one, Orre (the name of this new region) is a god-foresaken wasteland. Pokemon cannot be caught in the wild, because there is no "wild." Just miles and miles of wasteland. So, the people in this area coped by developing machines that steal the Pokemon of other trainers. This device is called a "snagger," and this is where the story begins. There is an evil organization who is trying to assemble "Shadow Pokemon." These Pokemon are just like the normal, garden variety, except that they have no hearts. The reason this organization wants them is because they are rediculously vicious fighting machines. The main character, Wes, is a member of this organization, buts wants to leave for one reason or another, and he steals a snagger in the process. And so the adventure begins.

The training aspect is also a bit different. Since most of the Pokemon you will be catching are Shadow Pokemon, you need to purify them of their shadow status, and you do this by sticking them in battle after battle until thier shadow meter is reduced to zero, and they finally begin to obey you. Each Shadow Pokemon can only do a single attack, Shadow Tackle, but the more and more they begin to like you, and as a result regain their heart, the more moves they "remember" from their former, pre-shadow lives.

There were many complaints about how this game does nothing to change the classic Pokemon formula from the guys at GI, but I say screw them! We've been clammouring for a console Pokemon, and I'm glad we've finally got one. It doesn't need to change anything. It's freaking Pokemon! It is beautiful in it's simplicity.

This all comes from reports in both Game Informer, as well as Nintendo Power.

Now I am super excited.

Yo CV, I got the new Nintendo Power today, and it had some new info on the game that I don't think I've seen anywhere else.

- All the story mode battles are 2 on 2

- The main hero gets a sidekick, a psychic girl, and she's the one who tells you which Pokemon are Shadow ones... not all pokemon you fight will be evil

- Entei, Suicune, and Raikou will be in the game, possibly hidden (the three legendarys from Silver / Gold

- At the end of story mode, all the pokemon you've purified can be transfered into Ruby / Sapphire

- You have to take Pokemon to an ancient relic to fully purify them and unlock it's 4th move

- There will be colosseum's in story mode where you can battle for cash and prizes

- In an interview with the developers, they had said how they've worked had to make a Pokemon RPG and overall game that appeals to older gamers, which is why we have a sort of anti-hero and the game is a bit dark.

- Each colosseum in Battle Mode looks radiacally different from one another... however, the only way to play solo battle is to either a) import a team from ruby / sapphire or b) have a fully purified team from the RPG mode.

That's about everything I saw... I can't wait for this.

And according to Nintendo Power and the interview with the developers, the RPG isn't just a sidequest and is really the meat and potatoes of the game. They promised interesting chracters and lots of story twists, as well as lots of stuff do and places to battle.

There's also a trainer gym, if you don't know how to play or haven't played in a very long time.

Like I said earlier, Cyndaquil, Chikorita, and Crocodile, the three starters from silver / gold, will be playable in the game as well.

The main character's two main pokemon are an umbreon and espon (the two advanced evolved forms of eevee, one is light and the other is dark, respectively.

There is also a place called Mt. Battle, in the solo battle mode, where you fight 100 trainers, one after the other :o

I already knew the bit about the Espion, Umbrion, the RPG being the meat of the game, and the 30+ hour story, but the rest of that info is new to me. 100 trainers in a freaking row? Bring it on, biotch!

One more thing, is that the good majority of the pokemon in the story mode are from Silver / Gold.

Makes sense, since all of the old school pokemon are in Fire Red / Leaf Green.

Right on. This game catches my eye every now and then and I remind myself to keep my eye on it, but now that it's nearing its release date (and after reading this thread), I'm getting a bit excited. But I'm still poor. Damn you all :(

I wont pick this up until I know how many pokemon I can actually catch in the game. If it is quite a bit, then I might give it ago. If they make it so it is very little...well, then I wont pick it up as soon. I dont have the GBA games so I have no way of getting all the pokemon I like on there.

So, Mman, how do you know which Pokemon you like if you don't own the game? Huh?! Answer that one! :p

I dont "own" the game but I played and beat the GBA version with the Japanese rom when it first came out.

Got my bonus disk yesterday for "preordering" a day in advance of release. Went home and put Jirachi in the gba game. Yippee! We started a new game with him at the beginning and he's pretty kick ass.

Picked up my copy of Colosseum today. Haven't had a chance to play it yet since I'm at work. Anybody else pick it up?

I haven't purchased the game yet, and unfortunately, Samurai Jack is higher on my list of priorities, so this'll have to wait a few days.

im currently lost in swg(im that close to getting a teras kasai novice) so im not focusing on other games right now, but once i hear some impressions, i will be there. Just a thought, i thought pokemon was dead, but last year it was the 2nd and 3rd highest selling games out there, so im curious to see how this will do.

Anyways, free OFFICIAL strategy guide when you purchase it at Target!

Even if you got it from EB or Gamestop for the bonus disk, buy it again at Target, get a free strat guide, and return that sealed copy to EB.
