Anybody have any good C++ resorces?

I hate to ask this as there probably already was a thread for it, but TNL's wonderful search engine won't let me do searches for "C++".

What are some good resorces for learning C++? I'm in your basic C++ class this semester. I'm not so much having trouble learning it as I'm not programming enough to remember what this and that does. -_- I need to do something more than once a week to remember it, and I'm sorry, reading the text book isn't going to cut it.

Sites and/or books, doesn't matter. If you think it will be good practice, or may make things easier to understand, great. Anything anyone thinks will help will do.

Currently I'm running through an online copy of "learn C++ in 21 Days" I found online here.

what are you having trouble remembering? What is "this and that"? Like you're not remembering the syntax for function calls, cout, what?

Ah, it is a little bit of everything. IMO I am having to look up way to much. We have had like 3 or 4 programs and 1 project so far. I think it is understandable though, who does something once and remembers it all completely next time, and how to use it, and how to change it around to use with different things?

Not me.

I'd really like some simple stuff to do, so when it comes time to do the next program I can get all the other stuff out of the way and focus on the new material we learned that day, or past few days.

Sort of like the way most people learn math. Learn thing, do so and so many problems using thing slightly different ways, next day learn next new thing, more problems, rinse, repeat.

Right now I'm not doing enough to remember what I feel is adequate for myself.

So keep practicing. You're in your first semester of it, so I doubt you're even putting that much work into classes. The most advanced thing you're probably gonna use in any of your programs are switch statements or arrays.

But I took my C++ course four years ago, so Im not sure.

Anyway, what Im trying to say is that your textbook is more than adequate. Or just google "C++ tutorial". And practice. Try writing a calculator. Then write something that prints a string of characters backwards. And make sure you use the most cutting edge shit you learn - for example, build the program so that it calls a function, even if that's not necessary (like for a calculator).

:mad: I don't want to read, I want to do. You can read about C++ all day and not learn anything. It's only as good as what you can do with it.

I did that, and I am doing that right now. I just thought someone would know of something I missed. Search engines don't always find all the good stuff.

I've already wrote a program that writes characters backwords and numbers backwords. -_- took me forever becuase I thought there was simple command for it and I had somehow not heard or read it. Spent hours looking for it. I forget how I got the letters to work, but for the numbers I had to abuse the hell out of the "int" and it's properties. I could have used % but the program would screw up when you tried 1000.

Are there really no other people on this board who code?

Yeah, I code for a living, but not too much with C++. Only time I ever used VC++ in the industry was for an installation program to compliment something I couldn't do with Installshield. Nowadays I just use it for hacking Japanese import PC games to English, but I work in "C". Meh to C++, I say. It can get unnecessarily complicated later, but it was a useful preparation for JAVA. Jobs I had needed C, VB, Perl, and later JAVA. More C code out there that needs maintaining.

Well, I can offer some of my C++ programs from my college days. I have some basic to advanced assignments like doing a queue; solving the Towers of Hanoii problem (and other recursion exercises); getting the number of paths present in a 2 dimensional square grid; using a binary tree to filter words in a paragragh; simulating a multiplexer/demultiplexer; and the most advanced being a compiler for a pseudo-pascal language. 200-300 level classes basically. Lemme know if you want 'em and feel free to IM me sometime if you're stuck with a particular problem or assignment.

Personally, I learned the most by working in my university's computer labs. Having a job there made all the difference. Dummies would come for help bringing me their assignments and sometimes, they'd bring me the tests from prior semesters for a class I was taking even. Naturally, I was more than inclined to help in the latter case ;). Point is, the environment helped keep me on my toes.

Anyway, other than what diff said, dunno what to tell ya. You sound like me as far as wanting to skip the reading part when it comes to your book and go right into the doing. Bad habit, but I got away with it many times... Either way, good luck.

I don't know why but doing seems to help me a lot. Mentally it feels like the book isn't a part of me, like it's this foreign thing and everything I read is sort of fuzzy when I need it later. But I can usually recall things I've done a few times with virtually no thought.

How hard is it to go from C++ to C? I'm wanting to hack a lego RCX unit as a fun way to play with my new skills, but it looks like most the of the stuff already done with it is C and jave based. I'm not good enough yet to start completely from scratch. :(

I don't know man, I took a Visual Basic course last semester and the textbook helped me grasp the primary things I needed to know in order to program quite well, it was lacking in sufficient explanation for the extreme technicalities (or at times, overall concepts) and when that happened I usually got help from Lhadhatt or a few classmates. Just read the chapters you're assigned to, and do the exercises that are in the chapter or that the chapter should be helping you learn.

There really arn't any exercises in this book. Not good ones. Thats another thing i'm look for, easy simple practice that will help me understand the basic concepts.
