People, please.

I'm fairly certain these pics are just Minter showing off. I don't think Lionhead (nor Nintendo for that matter) would take kindly to off-kilter ephitets flying toward the camera. If you dig into his blog posts, you'll see that he has a penchant for trying to get the hardware to do cool stuff. Considering the blog trail, it seems that he's gotten the game elements integrated to a point that he's comfortable with showing off.

Considering Minter's pedigree (*cough*TEMPEST*cough*), I don't think you elitest arsebadgers have anything to worry about.

Dave Thuerer, the original designer of Tempest, is brilliant. Minter is good at updating his work.

Have a little faith, people. It's a fast-action arcade shooter married to a music light machine synth with every texture in the game generated on the fly by the music. Even fuzzy, I think the screens are stunning and can't wait to get my hands on this.

Every texture is generated by the music? So is the music totally random? If not, wouldn't you end up with the same textures over and over?

i'm sure there's going to be a little Underworld on the soundtrack.)

wait a sec, minter's using the gamecube because he prefers its development environment to the other two consoles. that's all well and good, but wouldn't the game be like a million times better if you could use your own music? it would be rock if there was a way to pipe any audio into the gamecube.. stupid tiny proprietary discs.

I've got an old version of VLM, the music to texture generating program, on the Samsung Nuon. Short answer to the question of repeated textures- no. Somewhat longer answer- not enough info yet, check back later.

And yeah, I'd love to see a way to pipe your own music into the game. Minter hasn't said a thing on it no matter how many times it's been brought up, so your guess is as good as mine. It might be a feature he's working on, it might be a feature he isn't sure he can implement, it might be something he just wishes he could do. As it is, we'll see. Personally, I'm picturing something involving the Gamecube BBA and a PC, but that's more my fond little dream than anything else.

One interesting feature- VLM 3.5 is a straight music light synthesizer with no game involved. You have some control over the visuals with the controller and can tweak them to better suit the music. Unity will have 4-player cooperative VLM, and it's supposed to be amazing, if reaction from the parties it's been shown at is any indication.

For the doubters, every single person I've shown the Nuon VLM to has taken to it immediately. I've got a few friends off searching for their own now, seeing as it's also a nice DVD player for under $100. Nuon VLM was v2. Unity VLM is v3.5. I'm expecting good things.

Well that's perfect on the GameCube.

That kludgy rig you described, BBA+PC, would be AWESOME, and totally optimal. Especially since no consoles out now lets you rip your own music and play it in-game.
