I now fully understand the concept of this game based upon the screenshots in this thread.
So, I gather that this is some sort of "look at pretty colors with funny words in them" simulator? Sounds amazing.

Oh, and Tempest 2000, Tempest 3000, Llamatron, the original Gridrunner games, and a bunch of other stuff I haven't played yet. He's a brilliant game designer with a thing for abstract graphics and serious eye-melting light shows wrapped up in fast arcade gameplay. In other words, God.
For what it's worth, these shots are from him fooling around on his home turf, the Llamasoft forums, and giving everyone both a peek at the graphics engine and having a bit of fun throwing inappropriate text around. None of these shots will ever make the game. They were taken using a digital camera.
Unity will be both an amazing game and a gorgeous one.

I'm fairly certain these pics are just Minter showing off. I don't think Lionhead (nor Nintendo for that matter) would take kindly to off-kilter ephitets flying toward the camera. If you dig into his blog posts, you'll see that he has a penchant for trying to get the hardware to do cool stuff. Considering the blog trail, it seems that he's gotten the game elements integrated to a point that he's comfortable with showing off.
Considering Minter's pedigree (*cough*TEMPEST*cough*), I don't think you elitest arsebadgers have anything to worry about.

Dave Thuerer, the original designer of Tempest, is brilliant. Minter is good at updating his work.

wait a sec, minter's using the gamecube because he prefers its development environment to the other two consoles. that's all well and good, but wouldn't the game be like a million times better if you could use your own music? it would be rock if there was a way to pipe any audio into the gamecube.. stupid tiny proprietary discs.
I've got an old version of VLM, the music to texture generating program, on the Samsung Nuon. Short answer to the question of repeated textures- no. Somewhat longer answer- not enough info yet, check back later.
And yeah, I'd love to see a way to pipe your own music into the game. Minter hasn't said a thing on it no matter how many times it's been brought up, so your guess is as good as mine. It might be a feature he's working on, it might be a feature he isn't sure he can implement, it might be something he just wishes he could do. As it is, we'll see. Personally, I'm picturing something involving the Gamecube BBA and a PC, but that's more my fond little dream than anything else.
One interesting feature- VLM 3.5 is a straight music light synthesizer with no game involved. You have some control over the visuals with the controller and can tweak them to better suit the music. Unity will have 4-player cooperative VLM, and it's supposed to be amazing, if reaction from the parties it's been shown at is any indication.
For the doubters, every single person I've shown the Nuon VLM to has taken to it immediately. I've got a few friends off searching for their own now, seeing as it's also a nice DVD player for under $100. Nuon VLM was v2. Unity VLM is v3.5. I'm expecting good things.

That kludgy rig you described, BBA+PC, would be AWESOME, and totally optimal. Especially since no consoles out now lets you rip your own music and play it in-game.

Yeah, I admit that's the kind of crap thinking you get when you let people, rather than corporations, design games. I think Lionhead ought to take it from Minter and let EA finish it up right. That way instead of personal preference having any say in how it goes it'll all be sorted out by corporate drones using demographics and focus groups.

I remember hearing that there was a "Rude" build of Tempest 3000 with vulgar names for all the webs. Unfortunately it isn't buried anywhere in the released version of the game :(
