It's because the guy who played him and the ninjas in MK and MKII, Daniel Pesina, made the monumentally stupid mistake of posing for an ad for the game Bloodstorm in his Johnny Cage costume. The ad's caption even said, "Even MK's Johnny Cage prefers Bloodstorm!"

Weirdly enough, his relative Carlos (don't remember if he's Daniel's cousin or brother) contributed so much to the series (he played Raiden in MK1-MKT and did much of the motion capture work for MK:DA) that the MK team made Mokap to honor the work he did.

I have no idea what the answer is, but I'll wager a guess. I imagine it's a character whose actor didn't return for MK3, so . . . Shang Tsung?

You're close.

It was Katalin Zamiar (MKII Jade, Kitana, and Mileena), Elizabeth Malecki (MK1 Sonya), and Philip Ahn M.D. (MKII Shang Tsung). They sued Midway because they felt they were entitled to more money because their likenesses were used in the home versions as well. The suit was dismissed because the plaintiffs didn't prove their case.

(I said it was close because Shang Tsung was in MK3... he just looked a lot better in MKII.)

I know Tsungy was in MK3, but it wasn't the same actor. I didn't know the guy's name, so I called him by his character's. ;)

Nah, it's not a paying gig, unless you count the E3 passes Midway gives us each year to cover their games. Sometimes, though, it would be really nice if it was... heh. (Like when we held that developer chat and got overwhelmed when a thousand people showed up. I nearly had a cardiac arrest that night.)

With all of this Mortal Kombat talk I sat down last night and played Deadly Alliance for several hours. There were a few characters that I hadn't finished in Konquest, and I still had ten or more krypts to unlock. (All Onyx and Platinum)
The game is better than I remember it being. I quit playing it when I got it because of how annoying the combo system was, but if you just enter everything in slower and actually do it as your character is hitting his/her opponent you'l nail it.
I remembered the fatalities being awful too, and for the most part they are. But there are some really good ones in there too. The ones I liked were-
Cyrax
Reptile
Johnny Cage
Sub-Zero
and Kenshi (even though the eyeballs at the start look a little too cartoony, I would have only had four on this list, so I decided to include this one anyway)

I had fun playing it though. A lot of fun actually. I plan on playing it later when I get finished surfing the net. It's a really good fighting game that's slightly above average for 3D Fighters. If it was just faster and a little more seamless it would be perfect.
I have more problems with the "Mortal Kombat" side of it. The fatalities were about as original as stomping on someone's head (two of the characters do this) and the character designs just don't feel MK to me. And the character portraits and look of the entire game...they look like action figures. (Johnny Cage's select portrait being a prime example)
I also hated all of the new characters with the exception of Mei Li and Kenshi. Boa Rai Cho (if that's spelled right) is the worst character to enter the MK scene. I mean I'm ok with a little humor in my MK, but farting and barfing? Come on Ed Boon, maybe you need Tobias back.
The storyline for the most part is awesome. Really digs into the MK mythos.
The fact is though, I'm really pumped about MK6/Deception. If they can fix these small little gripes I've had it just might be a perfect game. They're already on the right track adding Ermac and Noob back into the roster, here's to hoping it's a massive improvement instead of just update to Deadly Alliance.
