I cancelled my Xbox Live because True Fantasy Online was delayed until 'this Christmas' or whatever, and they just charged me 90 dollars to renew my account when I didn't want it. The only games I played on Live were Mech Assault, which sucked, and Crimson Skies, which was fun. Neither of them warranted me to waste 90 dollars.
I cancelled my account without too much hassle. They asked me if I had a friend I could give it to, though, which I found bizarre. I just told them that if my friends wanted Live they'de buy their own.
Chances are, though, True Fantasy won't even come out until 2005 or 2006, and Halo 2 will be out for this Christmas time. That's a year of me not using Xbox and paying for it. My school years winding down in college and my funds are running low from the pounding they took this year. 90 dollars means I eat lunch one day or can by art supplies the next.
I don't feel like their service is worth 90 bucks a year.
This addition came with the PC version, it doesn't add all that much but you do get to buy some really expensive and unique items.
it's not. it's worth 50. why did they charge you so much?Quote:

Now they're going to charge you for downloadable content on top of that. They should give you the option of using a buddy list, and THEN charge you extra, but make the initial service much much cheaper.
I'm also a PC gamer besides a console gamer, and I get things like Battlefeild and TFC, and Theif and Halflife 2 coming out in a little bit. There's no reason for me to own Live right now. I was looking forward to True Fantasy Online and playing with you guys, but who knows when that will drop.
They automatically renewed my account too. That pissed me off and I called to cancel and the guy kept trying to convince me to keep it. In the end they refunded my full $50 and change so it was worth it. But that "give it to a friend" thing is just wierd.Quote:

They lose subscription rates when we cancel. They like to say their subscription rate is high to keep developers putting new content out for it.
This content would've been cool if I can figure out how to get outta the Star Forge. I did go there from a new game I started and I didnt buy anthing cause it all looked shitty to me and there was no weapons. Maybe the good weapons dont come out till later in the game?
Wow...my Live runs out this month. Since there's pretty much nothing I'm interested in right now save maybe some downloadable NG content (which I bet shows up in OXM), maybe I'll just cancel it now...
correct. at least, that's what the idiot shopkeeper says.Quote:

It was only a matter of time before people got sick of the delays and decided to cancel their subscriptions (at least for the time being). You can't just string paying subscribers along with "Halo 2/Fable/True Fantasy is coming to Live" hype and then not deliver any of them within a reasonable timeframe. At any rate, they can always re-subscribe if those games turn out be awesome.Quote:

and holy shit. are you actually complaining about game delays? as though they're exclusive to xbox live games? it's a fucking industry-wide practice. jesus.
Most games are delayed from their original release once, maybe twice if things get really bad. How long has Fable been in development? How many different release dates has it had? What about True Fantasy Online? Halo 2 went from Christmas 2003, to early 2004, and more recently to late 2004.Quote:

Rushing a game to meet a release date is a FAR more common industry-wide practice.
This has little to do with Xbox Live, except for the fact that the constant delays of major Live-enabled titles just string current subscribers along. I know quite a few people who haven't used Xbox Live for a long time, but they've kept their subcriptions because Halo 2 was on the way at the end of last year. Of course, then it was delayed till early 2004 a couple months before the originally scheduled release date. But since it was only delayed until early 2004, people can still justify keeping their subscriptions to be ready for the game. Then a few months later, another delay is announced - this time until the end of the year. If the game's development was going to take at least a year longer than anticipated, don't you think Bungie and MS would have realized that a long time ago?
All I'm saying is that eventually people get fed up with this type of behavior, and if they feel they're not getting their money's worth with other Live titles in the mean time, then it's not surprising that you see people cancelling their subscriptions (like others in this thread have mentioned doing). No one here cancelled their subscription because they hated the service. They cancelled it, because they've got nothing to play online that interests them anymore, which is partially a byproduct of the constant delays of Live's most promising titles.
I'm a picky fuck.
I am completely satisfied with Live. I play PSO with friends (HI M!! OMG!) from around the country, I play LInks and PGR2 and CvS2 and many other games and have a blast with it. I love the gamertags and the way I can always see what my friends are playing. I use the chat feature as a free phone anywhere in the country. For 50 bucks a year. It's insanely worth it for me; without it, my box would get 1/3 of the use it gets now. I'm done arguing over its pros and cons forever, this is bullshit.
And I smoked Sl1p in Links! FEEL IT!
Yeah, its $50 a year. A YEAR! Mzo pointed out what great uses it has. For the price of one normal release, you get a year of quality online service, voice chat, "buddylists", online ranking, etc. Whoever complains about paying $50 for a year of online service, because they are waiting for delayed games is a bit off-center. It's VERY cheap compared to SOE and other online service prices for PC. And with a year of it, you have PLENTY of time to wait. Also I think theres an option to suspend your account, just for that reason! You can suspend the Live account, and reactivate it later when you want to use the remaining time. Confirm this for me though first, please.
And we've all seen how excellent the results of that have been.Quote:

Considering the development of Halo, no.Quote:

I didn't say rushing games to release was a good thing, just that it was a far more common occurrence.Quote:

I don't have issues with extended development times, because they usually result in a better end product. But publishers or developers shouldn't be announcing release dates when there's little chance a development studio is going to meet their target deadline. And it's borderline ridiculous when it happens multiple times during a game's development, especially with a console release, unless there are some outside circumstances (such as being bought out and switching development platforms as in Bungie's case).
The world is collapsing around our ears
I turned up the radio
I can't hear it.
i can't see myself cancelling XBL right now... not with splinter cell 2 out this soon..
and even though RS3 is the only game i bother playing on live these days, it's still worth the $50 a year.. it isn't that much money for a year.
um. I already beat KOTOR...twice...with the weapons I already had available....lame, man, lame.
Is the content free?
Yes.

Xbox live - it's such a slick system.
The Sony online situation is a shambles in comparison - at least here in Japan, where it seems you have to pay a monthly fee for just about every game (5$ a month to play Bomberman online ?!?). Feega passwords and logins, Playonline, Konami web....
no id across games, no universal lobby, etc... etc...
Games wise, PGR2 keeps me more than entertained online at the moment. :)
I have about a month left on mine. That's enough time to get my fill of Tenchu, then I will likely cancel too. Charging $50 a year for a matching service should be punishable by castration.Quote:

I don't remember Halo 2 EVER being announced for 2003. I always thought of it as 4th quarter 2004, which is why I always got weirded out when I saw OMFG HALO 2 DELAYED UNTIL 2004 on Shacknews or something.
Really? I was thinking of putting herseys nuggets inside of it. Cookies and cream!Quote:

The place that set a date for Halo 2 was EB... Bungie did not set a date... they said we'll release it when it's finished. If it weren't for dipshit companies like EB pulling dates out of their ass there wouldn't be this arguement.
