I put this in the other WoW thread, but to make sure everyone sees it:
A stress test is coming soon. Just check the WoW page and they hooked up with fileplanet/gamespy for it. If you have a gamespy id or sign up with them (free) you can get in. They are looking for 100,000 people for the test and I just signed up and got in. I'm now waiting to download the stress test client from FP. No announcement on when it's going to happen, but it should be soon (it's going to be a week long).
I signed up, but then I realized I dont really want to be in some stress test. I canceled the download and thats that. Maybe Ill try it out again in the Open Beta, however.
They got this thing on some fast servers. Got 2 gigs in about a half hour.
Capped level and still going strong. Most fun I've had in an orpg, ever. And I'm not playing it with friends yet.
Is there any site to get some good screen shots of WoW, I want to see some pictures of the Shamans "Spirit Wolf" and I still don't know if the Druid has a wolf form... I would really like to know if it does ^..^
Don't have any sites offhand - most tend to have cruddy lowres shots with the interface enabled. I have multiple gigabytes of shots archiving my adventures from level 1 to level 55, but even converted, I don't have the space to upload them anywhere... You can search around a bit though, you might find a site with some good shots.
Spirit wolf is rather what you would expect - a spectral wolf. Druid does not have a wolf form. If you want a wolf, play an Orc - you can ride a giant wolf. Or play a Hunter, you can tame your own pet wolf.
Kind of disappoint Druids don't have a wolf form, Shaman sounds cool then... I heard that you can ride other mounts other then the specific ones for race but it's a bit harder, is that true?Quote:

edit: MechDeus, what you need to do is sign up for an account. You should've gotten the email by now. Then, go to Blizzard's World of Warcraft site, and login. Youll then get a link to download the client using Blizzard's custom bittorrent based software. Im currently getting 660k/sec on it.

Okay, I made an account, and I've almost downloaded the software (despite all the glitches that made it seem like I couldn't). About 80% done.
Of course, now I see that I only have OSX 10.2, and it says I need 10.3. Damn it all to Hell.
I'll try it anyway of course. Or just upgrade the system. My g/f can get it at the student price, and I'll need it sometime anyway.

Well I played this game today, its fun and addictive but I havent played an MMO that isnt fun and addictive (granted Ive only played SWG and EQ and UO). The graphics are pleasant and reminiscient of Warcraft 3. The world looks great, actually, very compact and interesting. The quest system is decent enough but its hardly outstanding.
A lot of people have said, "yea its a lot like any other MMORPG but ultra-polished like Blizzard"... I wouldnt even go as far to say that. The interface is pretty rough IMO (I really miss SWG's waypoint system, and the game could really use a better map system), the character creation system (which to be fair will probably be beefed up) is a sorry joke atm, and like I said the quests really are the same shit you do in other games.
Overall, a solid entry in the MMORPG field, and worth looking into, but I wouldnt call JTL or EQ2 dead in the water just yet.

Which servers are you guys on? I hate joining up with people on boards because one person says the server is A and you'll always have one idiot say: "WELL I JOINED B FOR NO REASON HAHAHA!". Of course, there's always the time delay of someone choosing a server before checking the thread.
I'm downloading this game right now and was accepted into the beta. I was just wondering which server most recipients were located? I'll join that one.
I'm on Neltharion and I think Diff is going to join me on that. You have to be an Alliance character to play with us (can't cross Horde and Alliance for some retarded reason). So it's Human, dwarf, Night Elf and one other I think.
I'll try to meet up with you guys once I get my OS up to date. I wanted to play Alliance anyway, but the class I wanted to play (Hunter) doesn't seem fleshed out yet. Apparently only 5 or so classes have all the secondary skills and stuff going.
It's freaking bitch to get new skills. For example, I need 15 (total) skill points to learn to use axes. After 3 or so hours I have 11 points. Shit could take awhile. I found some nice gear though, I'm pretty pimp.
I'm logging on now, same server and character name listed above (Netharion server, name: ArThore). I'm a level 5...give me a yell/shout whatever and we'll meet up.
Well, Im having fun with my Orc Warrior now (level 9, with a first aid trade skill), but Ill make an Alliance character for fun & testing. Ill go ahead and set that uup on Neltharian (or whatever it is) tonight.

The higher level you get the more fun it gets. I'm getting close to level 6 now, and have seen a little more of the world. It's fun finding new areas. I did some killing with diff for a bit (got a kick out of seeing him knife Troggs in the back) and I found another person to do some questing. We gotta meet up with a few of us...it's a lot more fun traveling with people.
Oh, it was pretty funny when diff actually waved (/wave) at me when we finally met up in the field. I like what I've seen so far (and it really is a pretty game).
Heh, the problem was that yes you are level 6 and I was level 3. So you were beyond the stupid noob quests I was doing. Right now Im level 4, going on 5. I am just about ready to venture outside of that valley (fuck the Felix Box). I added you to my friends list and you should do the same (Rogar), Ill be outside of that valley when I play later tonight (Ill be going through that cave) so just hit me up if youre on too.
Oh, and Ive tried two classes (warrior and rogue) and theyre both a lot of fun. Rogue's stealth mode is awesome! And Backstab could add a lot to party play.

That box quest is actually really easy, i'm just blind and didnt see it. When you leave anvil, follow the road that goes to the right (when your back is to Anvil, and the first little camp you see, its right there. It's right next to one of the tents. Looks like an ordinary box, right click on it and you'll pick it up. I'll be on at like 10:30 EST/7:30 PST. When you get throught that passage there are monsters that can actually kill you.

this explains it: Blizz is stress testing the servers, they took half of them down till about 11pm EST.
Okay, I'm going to try and be on all today. Didn't feel like shelling out for a new OS for less than a weeks worth of buggy play, so I just loaded it on my gf's assy, just-barely-above-spec Dell.
What race and server should I pick to play with you guys? I'm assuming Hoarde: Alexestrala (sp?)?
Well, I'm no where with any horde characters, so I'm going to stick to my Dwarf Paladin (ArThore) on Netherion. Not sure what diff is using...I won't be on until the evening (after 6pm EST). Oh and keep in mind that each race has a different start point. So say you pick human, you'll be in a different area. We would be able to meet up, but I have no clue where and at what level we would need to be at that point. Just going from one town to the next in the Dwarf area is a good 5 minute run.
To Rumpy: I've joined the Nelthorian server and am in the same town as you as a Gnome named Hodge. I've just started (level 1) and probably will play a lot tomorrow (Sunday) during the day. I'm a Rogue.
I'm in there with Andrew. He's working his way up and I just hit level 7. Join us!

My brother and I played pretty much all day, going through a night elf hunter, human mage, dwarf hunter, and finally settling on a troll shaman. Just about reached level 6 on that one, and definitely the most fun to play. Trolls have always been one of the cooler WC designs anyway.
One major problem though, I was following some orc, and ended up going over some cliff that landed me in some water...well, there was some uber marine life or something, because 2 hits later I die, and respawn in the graveyard of some other territory. Unable to retrieve my underwater body, I resurrect, only to find I'm in a town meant for characters about 10 lvls higher. Needless to say, it was a slow and careful walk back, where almost every creature could kill me in 1 or 2 hits.
Asking for help was fruitless, of course, as the game is populated with jerks too busy to answer a simple question now and then.

The server wigged out at like 1030 last night so I stopped for the night. I should be on the same time tonight.
I'm on level 4 or 5 now. This game is super easy to level up with and I'm told by player in game that at the higher levels this game becomes increasingly better. I'm a Gnome Rogue, so I hope that works out. I'm in the stress beta so I have a week to play this stuff before quitting.
Andrew, you going to be on tonight? I'm level 8 and shit is getting hard to kill by myself (I just got a sweet axe though).
I'm running about khaz'goroth with my Gnome warlock at present. Quite entertaining, even though every single quest has been a fetch/deliver or collect X number of Y items.
It's like Diablo...you know you're doing the same thing again again, but you keep going to see what cool shit you can find and to explore the world.

Where the hell is Kidnemo? What server is he on? I think I'm up to 10 hours now. Last night I saw a few NE's running around. I saw a level 15 mage too, his Minion was sick looking. Anyone know how dwarves can use guns? I've seen a few people with them. Start long range then go melee when they get close (and then back to gun if they try to run). I wanna do that too.
He still lurks like crazy, but got tired of posting here... plus he's now busy running the Comet 7 forums.

Anyway, I played for about 40 more minutes, completed the wendigo quest, now doing the shimmerweed quest, getting owned. I stopped when I got killed there and now my corpse is there. Sucks.

Shimmer Ridge, there's a path near the lake (cant remember the name) thats next to Brewnall Village. Its up in the mountains and surrounded by a fairly heavily-spawned group of seers.Quote:

From what I hear it's best to solo only up to lvl 15 or so. After that party questing becomes most important (and more necessary). I'm about to hop on now Diff.
How do you like the Tauren class Kid?
It feels just about right to me, but I have no love for spawn camping. At least, not competitive spawn camping. I had a ton of fun late last night, when my server was practically barren, hunting Vile Fins by a secluded pond, and running away to mushrooms when I (frequently) got in over my head. But having to share spawn zones and fight for loot... ugh. This is giving me a much greater appreciation for Guild Wars and its instanced worlds.Quote:

Yeah, but that's really when they shut half the servers down. Then most are doing the same quest so it sucks. Better to just log off and come back later.
Yeah, it was seriously overcrowded. And I did come back later. Took me, as mentioned, all of thirty seconds to polish off the quests I'd started hours earlier. It's just that the Undead area is structured such that you can't so much as think about leaving the start area without some EXP under your belt.
True, they're all like that. I've been in "second" Dwarf area for awhile. I just got a new weapon and boosted by armor quite a bit so now I"m getting quite a bit stronger. Can't wait to hit level 10 and move on to the next area.
I gotta admit, Im a bit underwhelmed by the game. Its gorgeous, and the cast of characters are great, it seems like they genuinely tried to make every class play differently, and the world looks very nice, but it just doesnt play like anything special. I got to level 10 with my warrior and I went across this fucking bridge to talk to a warrior trainer (figuring he was gonna give me some cool talents or something), and he was like... here is a fetch quest. Then I talked to some other characters there and they were like... here are some fetch quests.
Make no mistake, the game is definitely a solid MMORPG but I am already feeling a bit burned out, which is not a good sign.
Also, I just havent seen enough of what the high-level game is like (level 30+), which is what really matters for a game like this (youre gonna play it "forever", so it better have a lot of good stuff for people who arent n00bs). Ive read some stuff that Blizzard wants to implement heroes like War3 has but I have my doubts on putting uber-characters into the game, as its destroying Star Wars Galaxies as we speak.
I realize all of this may be unpopular as it looks like the game is already being christened as the best MMO ever and is destined to put every other one in the bargain bin (check out Got Next's horribly written preview for some of this hyperbole)... but thats just not the case. Its good but nothing special. Dont believe the hype.
I'd be cool of they had "storm the castle" kind of quests. Something different to do. It looks like there are a lot of trade skills though. Machinery, hunting (skining), fishing, mining, cooking, herbology, blacksmith...that's just the ones I've seen so far.
Yea, there are, but Ill tell you, I signed up for mining with my dwarf and its lame... you click on this "find ore deposits" button and walk around and try to find the copper veins in the area. There arent enough veins, and its tedious as hell. Its actually worse than Ultima Online's mining system, because UO at least had rich deposits on certain mountainsides right outside of town so you can just plop yourself there and mine to your heart's content.
I also tried First Aid with my warrior, thats a little better, because you use cloth you loot of dead guys. The crafting interface itself is very similar to SWG's, but slightly better because you have to click a few less times.
But in all honesty, crafting in WOW just isnt that good. It sucks in all the other MMOs Ive played, so its not like its fucking up something that other people have gotten right, but Blizzard in their infinite wisdom has not made an enjoyable crafting system from what I can see.

Me and Andrew did some traveling, the human city is amazing, and the forrest is sick. Lot of fun flying over the undead area.
That was definitely a lot of fun. I experienced a huge lag spike when the Griffin came in for a landing, but other than that it was amazing. I wish that the Griffon trainers would give you more options of towns to visit, but it was so great. We didn't fight too much stuff but it was fun.
I bullied around a few chickens. FuryFox: Where are you? I'm planning on travelling around a LOT. This thing ends on Thursday so there's no point in levelling up very much since it's wasted energy so I'm wasting my time seeing the sights. I really like the undead territory.
Does anybody know if Orcs and Undead are killed on sight in the Alliance towns? I know the Undead can swim underwater forever, so sneaking in to a human village would be easy pickens.

I think even the mindless hunting of games like EQ, UO and SWG is better than WOW's mindless, endless fetching. Especially a multiplayer one youre paying monthly fees for?
Its a real bummer and I really doubt Im gonna get this unless I hear that the high-level game is fucking amazing, which I highly doubt considering how limp the low-level one is.
Im seriously dissapointed that Blizzard could do nothing with the MMORPG genre except clone EverQuest. I mean, I was riding a fucking tidal wave of Blizzard fanboy good vibrations because of Warcraft 3 and this has dulled my enthusiasm towards them.
I'm playing a Troll Shaman (lvl 14) and things started pretty slow, but when I reached the Crossroads around lvl 11, it seemed like a ton of things opened. Fast traveling alternatives, crafting possibilities, quest all over the place, and generally just more fun with a developing character. Granted, I've avoided MMORPGS until now, so maybe most of this has been done before, but I find even if most the quests are "Go Somewhere, Do Something" the battles are frequent and strategic enough to set it off. A lot of the game is downright hard, so grouping is encouraged, and even in a group of strangers, everything become significantly more fun.
Seems like the quests are starting to get a bit more interesting and varied, but nothing like "Storm the Castle" or "Sneak onto Human Lands and Kill a Baby" or anything. It just seems like it gets better the more I play, so I'm still optimistic for the final result, but maybe that's just the addiction speaking.
Randomly: A bunch of Alliance players invaded Durotar last night, of course storming in right where I was trying to do a quest. Needless to say I didn't last long against group of 5 20+
I'm about to hop on now, i want to explore the human world. It's so pretty even the cows look cool.

I recently used a Wyvern transport to get between the Orc capitol Ogrimmar and a major intersection town, and even though I'd already been everywhere on the route, seeing it from the new perspective was really something. Ogrimmar itself if something, a gigantic, sprawling city with...I find I get lost more there than out in the field. I do find it funny that Thrall, despite being lvl 90 and living in a huge fort, just stands there like a dork and doesn't say anything to you. I assume the towns will be fleshed out more and have more NPC interaction in the retail.Quote:

This I totally agree with. A lot of these places are downright gigantic and it's the worst when you know what you have to do, but don't know where or how to get to the place you need to go to. And if you just walk in a direction you could walk 15 minutes in the wrong direction and have to treck all the way back. I need more than just north, east, west, south and 1 city on the map pin pointed. Did you hit M and look at how big the map is? There's a whole nother contanent. I'd love to get a horse or a steam powered buggy or something to haul ass faster. Walking blows.Quote:

I went back to the dwarf section and made my way to Lode Modan which is awesome (no damn snow) and got a new Griffon route to there. It's really for 11+ levels and I just hit lvl 10 so I get slaughtered by bears and shit. Took a quest that took me back to Storm City so I did that, got some new gear and now I'm doing some quests out in the forest. Just doing stuff in a new area is awesome. Rumpy: I started a new character as a Tharon. I don't plan on using my Gnome very much. I figure that I only have until Thursday, so I'm going to explore all of the parts of the world and not just the dwarven world. However, when the real game comes out we'll party together a lot.
Word. Be careful wandering around, a goat looks at you funny when you're low level and you could wind up dead just by passing by.
I'll try to make it back to the Dwarven city eventually, but I'm technically apart of the Horde now so I don't know if they'll take kindly to me.

As for me, I think I stopped playing on Tuesday. Like I said, its good as an MMORPG but as a videogame its really not that good, pretty tedious and boring. Amazing graphics though.

I plan to play it a bit more. I have no doubt I could have been top of the servers for levels but I haven't played like a hardcore gamer. I gained 7 levels in 4 hours, if I kept that up daily, I would have been in a much higher place then I am.
Really fun game though. I like it.
I don't know... Granted, I haven't played any others (except about 5 hours of day one EQ before returning it), but it seems pretty fun to me, and they still have loads more content to put in. PVP questing, raids on enemy lands, Hero classes, improved crafting system/auction houses/mailing, etc. Hearing what they plan for PVP sounds really amazing. They say it should be ready for Christmas, but looking at all that they have to put in, and all that needs to be balanced as is, I'd say no possible way before next year.Quote:

Heh, speaking as a person who has put extensive time into not one, not two, but three MMOs, the game is nothing special. Ive posted extensively in this very thread asto why I dont like the game, so just look back and see. I tried three characters and played the game solo, played the game grouped, discovered both worlds, and so forth. But Im glad some people like it.Quote:

Like I said I've played 9 MMORPGS.
Levelling up isn't a chore because they provide quests that give you a lot of variance and interest. Although I think Galaxies offers a great experience the grind is extremely brutal. Getting to the handle of creature handler only to have a huge drudge ahead of me to be any good at it was too daunting for me. I gave the game up shortly after.
That and I hate fighting giant spiders everywhere. The enemies in World of Warcraft are regional and interesting and they never have a little bunny rabbit chasing a large oxen warrior through a feild.
Except they dont! Am I the only one that sees this? Whether youre killing 10 mottled boars in the valley of trials (and sure enough, theres a quest later where youre killing 10 elder mottled boars somewhere else) or killing 12 darkwing harpys in the duskridge canyon (or whatever the fuck), youre still killing roughly a dozen guys in some random area.Quote:

I think all Blizzard really did was turn Diablo II into a MMORPG, then put a Warcraft skin over it. Because, really, seriously, thats what this game plays like. I got bored of Diablo II on both occasions I tried to play it but I know a lot of people would get addicted.
So, if anybody were to ask me if they should get WOW, Ill just ask them if they really really loved Diablo 2 and wanted the opportunity to play a much bigger version of that and pay monthly fees for the privilege.
Plus the whole PVP angle, which could be huge.
-and I'm one of those that was helplessly addicted to D2: LOD. I think the comparison is apt, as WoW seems like a really fleshed out dungeon crawler that's actually fun to play with other people. No one really played D2 in groups generally.
So far I've had to run bottles to and fro from tribal leaders and their grandmothers, find acorns and well stones for sacred rituals, locate a certain camp as a recon run, and yes, the slay 5 beasts. However in one mission I actually had to kill a tribal chief which involved using strategy in order to get into his hut, which is surrounded by a bajillion enemies. And I beat it.
Right now I'm in the middle of a 3 part quest which is designed to take me further into the world.
But in a nutshell you're right. MMO's aren't compelling as games... but they're still fun if you like the experience.
Is PVP optional? I know on Nelthorian people are telling me that Tauron are killed on site in Alliance villages and facilities, but I really think I'd like to explore that island without having to be a pink fleshed wuss.Quote:

Another 3 days? Nice. The urge may hit me again. When release rolls around I think I'm going to wait awhile before getting in. It may be a rough start and it won't be a lot of fun if there are 50,000 people doing the same quests at once. And I won't pay more than 10 bucks a month.
