(Far Rockaway-WABC, March 16, 2004) — A tragic accident was discovered when neighbors in a Far Rockaway apartment building called police to say they hadn't seen a mother and her child for days.

When the police arrived they found a mother and son both dead in the bathtub in a ground floor apartment, and at first they didn't know what they were dealing with. Neighbors said when they hadn't seen their friends for several days, they knew something was wrong.

Jeffrey Taylor, Neighbor: "She just ... adopted him less than a year ago. And we came out here in the hallway to take photographs of my artwork after his birthday."

Neighbors are inconsolable, mourning the tragedy across the hall. The three-year-old, described as everyone's best buddy, was killed -- drowned accidently, police say, while being bathed by his mother.

Valjon Furr, Neighbor: "She babysat, she took care of the kids. She loved kids. That's why she adopted little Robbie."

Rosland Hines, 51, was struggling with health problems according to her friends, and she apparently suffered a heart attack while giving her son a bath. Police say she collapsed on top of the child, pinning him underneath her, in the bath water.

Jeffrey Taylor: "She was a fighter. She did anything for the kids. Anything for the kids. And seeing her and little Robbie, that's a little bit much for me."

Neighbors here are just heart-broken, everyone here seemed to take care of this little boy. Hines had adopted him after she had lost one of her sons. She adopted Robbie when he was just a week old, and he had just turned three-years-old.

Police and the medical examiner's office are still investigating.

Yeah, that is pretty messed up. Drowning has got to be one of the more horrific ways I can imagine dying.

On the bright side, at least he died before he could be tainted, corrupted, and robbed of his innocence and humanity by the rest of the world :D

This, however, is very funny.

Thats awful.

That sucks. That's really a terrible thing to have happen. The bright side of this, I guess, is that her neighbors were actually concerned about her after not seeing her for a while. A small ray of hope and an example that society isn't all bad.

I dunno. How do you collapse so fast so as not to avoid drowning your son?

It's not too bad, really. You only last a minute or two before you go unconscious and never wake up. Drowning victims miss all the nasty parts like inhaling water and watching their body shut down, and there's very little pain.

Although the certainty of knowing that you're about to die can't be a very fun thing.

Maybe she knew the kid's life would suck without her or something. Or maybe the kid thought she was playing or something and realized too late what was happening (or didn't realize at all). There's a whole bunch of stuff to think about, but why would she kill herself and the kid? I've never had a heart attack, but I've heard that they can be painful and most people can't move due to shock from pain if it's severe enough. Who knows.
