SONY says NO price drop.....hmmm....

I won't be the least bit surprised if the system is still at $300 during this holiday season. And it probably won't make a difference. Remember, we're talking about a console that already had 20 million fans before it ever even came out...

Joe Thugg, who makes half of what I make in a year, seemed to manage getting HIS Playstation 2, so the rest of us won't have any problem with it in the short term. I can't see the $300 price tag hurting Sony at all unless both GC and Xbox are both significantly under $300, and it's around mid 2003. The extent of the hype, uninformed opinions, and support for Sony's gaming machines has gone beyond explanation.

And Sony is probably making the right move. It's outselling GC easily with the bigger price tag as it is, and handling the X-box for the moment as well. 'out of the box' online gaming doesn't mean dick to the mass public...if it did, media pundits and casual-heads wouldn't be telling you how incredible it is that you can get online and play games over the net 'out of the box'....what was that system called again? Dreamcasket? Dreamcast?

Mmm-hmm.

Sony has the whole industry by both balls and every vein within, and no one can defeat them except themselves.

i dunno but the upcoming XBox line up got me more excited than the GC or PS2 line ups,,,, save for Shinobi and Gungrave on the PS2.

It's almost like a paradox, for some people.

You want a PS2 because you know that in the long run, it's going to be supported and it's going to be successful. It's almost an insurance poilicy, all the more important since the Dreamcast's fiasco of an early death...

Then again, you want an Xbox or a Gamecube because both systems have upcoming software that's hard to turn away from....Then again, how long and how well supported will those systems be?

Since I have not one of the 'new three' yet, I find myself watching the first two years of the competition swing by, getting exposed to all the systems by way of people I know who have them....waiting for some sort of damned sign, or tax-check dpending on your viewpoint.

To make my point, it certainly looks like the Box and the Cube are going to be rocking pretty hard this Christmas, but one of my reservations is the thinking that most of the Box or Cube exclusives, save first party material, will eventually see a PS2 port. Not each and every one, but I don't have a hard time picturing Orta appearing on the PS2 (eventually) and others of similar ilks.

There are a few games out for the PS2 right now that make me seriously consider spending all that damned money...Ico, Virtua Fighter 4 to name a couple....but I'm in the same boat with the Cube and the Xbox. I'm going to sit back, have a cold one, and watch the fireworks this Christmas. By then I'll most likely have made a choice, but perhaps not a purchase....( If could afford it, I'd want and have all three of them, respectively.)

It's been a long time since there's been any type of 'real' console war. Good to see it happening again, but at least in the golden days, someone's lead wasn't so insurmountable already....

anywho..yes customers want items cheaper cuz they are the ones paying for it..i do to. but put it this way. what is the NUMBER 1 thing companies are looking for? MONEY aka PROFIT

if you were in SONY's shoes and your system was still selling strong even with the competitors competeing against you. would you drop it? forget about the customer and what they think..think about the company itself. like i said above..the NUMBER 1 think companies have on their mind is MONEY..customers come second. so why drop the price of an item if the item is selling strong at $300 and your making a profit? its like, having the last piece of food on earth..what do you do, think about someone else like the homeless or do you think about yourself? [i hope that made sense..kinda]

yes sony can be digging themselves a grave by not lowering the price to compete with the XBOXs price if they do drop it. but at the same time, if they dont drop it and MS does drop the XBOX price, sony plans to dig themselves a bigger pocket full of profit.

even if you werent in sonys shoes..think about nintendos and ms's perspective. why is ms dropping the price of the xbox? its been out for about 6 months. i dont think they made enough profit to make up for the loss from the xbox. is the xbox not doing so good that they want to drop it to get more fan base? does ms not care about the profit and want to make the customers happy? [could be but i doubt it]. same goes for Nintendo. why wont they drop the price? do they feel confident it will still sell well even if the competitors drops its price of the system?

all i hear is "why arent they dropping the price" this and that..just think about being in their position. i know your number 1 thing as well as 99.9% of everybodies mind is money when it comes to business. just take a look at bill gates. hes a multi-billionaire, by how? its all about STRATEGY :D

What's with all the endless lectures on the profit system? Jesus Christ, like we were born yesterday. Everyone who's being critical about Sony's marketing tactics is venting, reasonably or not, and I don't blame them.

whats with all the endless questions about why companies are or arent dropping prices? its their system, and its their own grave that they are digging. if they want to or dont want to drop it, than let it be..no one can control them

I have said that time and time again on this board. This man is a good business man. I have faith in that he alone can make the xbox a success. Sure he has the money to lose to create a win situation, but dammit once again that is just smart business.
