official cartoon and cartoon accessories thread

We have a lot of threads on the main page of Cinemania, the best forum TNL has (to me anyway), so I thought that we could just compile the huge list of cartoons we always seem to talk about in other threads in to one massive thread. Family Guys rebirth, Futurama's Volume release glory, new Simpson episodes and even things like Samurai Jack could make for good conversation, but even better in one larger thread that would stretch for miles of cartoon road, eventually coming to a painted on tunnel that Wiley Coyote would run in to.

First and foremost I would like to ask anybody about the rumored new cartoon by Matt Groening. I'm guessing he took the cancellation of Futurama pretty hard, as did most of us fanboys of the show (because it was so awesome) and wants to prove that he can still make relevant shows in todays Reality TV world. It will probably be routed more in reality. Man I miss Futurama.

Also, the Simpsons quality has been increasing slightly over this season. This still brings them up to about -4, but you know, it's better. I know Matt probably doesn't care about things like he used to out of apathy towards working so long... but oh well. People say they've covered every topic under the sun, which isn't true at all. Each episode usually covers a new topic they're interested in, and most of them have the potential to be awesome. Some good quotes come out of them like when Wiggum gets his badge back from Homer and says: "That's funny, this is how I got the job the first time."

Anyway, enough with the long boring talk. Lets talk about cartoons.

This thread is not for anime. Anime lovers have their own forum for that. This is for none-anime related cartoons.

Has anybody seen the recent Samurai Jacks? I loved that portal guardian and he also kicked Akus ass once again. I think they're going to be wrapping up the series this or next season. I can't wait for the DVD.

I've always been a fan of Jack, and even though the first two seasons had a few rough episodes (namely the dragon episode and the Jack in wonderland episode) it's still my favorite American cartoon. Some noted favorites of mine:

Epsisode 25: Jack meets the Spartans. What can I say? It's got an epic feel from beginning to end, some of the best action sequences in the entire series, and a killer soundtrack.

Episode 30: Jack and the Zombies. Great fight, the best one between Jack and Aku to date. I loved the dark mood and the incredible fight choreography.

Episode Something-or-other: Jack vs. Aku. This is the funniest episode they ever made. Not only does it mock their rivalry, it almost goes as far as to mock the structure of the show itself:

Aku: We fight, you beat me, and I run away screaming something like "Curse you SAMURAIIII!!" Then we don't hear from each other for a about two weeks.

Then the part where they keep one-upping each other with the fake swords was hilarious.

Yeah, great show. Can't wait for the DVD.

The Simpsons is back on the road to recovery, as this season has been full of great episodes. Classic cartoons are currently suiting my fancy, as I'm stunned at how amazing some of the animation was for them. God bless the $7 two-DVD classic cartoon set I bought a week or so ago, as it brought back many memories for me, and I haven't even seen half of the eps. offered on it yet.

Those SJ episodes sound great. Unfortunately I havent been watching SJ lately, so I miss out on the fun stuff :(

I really enjoyed the Scotsman character too. The gun for a leg would normally be weird, but in the Jack universe it works. That's one of the things i love about the show. You can have something like talking nightclub dogs and not have it appear totally cheesy.

Ya, the Flintstones and Scooby Doo were just released. I really enjoy these shows, although Scooby Doo is repetitive as hell. The Flintstones had a lot of life right up until the end.

All those old Hana Barbera cartoons are pure garbage.

Dennis the Menace needs to be out on DVD.

Flintstones I wouldn't call amazing, but it was certainly groundbreaking. Without it, prime-time cartoons would never exist.

Aside from that, the Jetsons, and Tom & Jerry, I can't really disagree with Regus, though. I'm not saying that I dislike all their "churn 'em out" cartoons, (They're mostly tolerable), but I do look down on their production standards.

Hey, here's something obscure for you guys: Project GeeKeR. Ran on CBS for one season in the mid-90s, it was a futuristic half-comedy with the title character (voiced by Billy West) and his rescuers (Noah, a hyper-intelligent dinosaur, and Lady Macbeth, a cyberpunk girl with a mechanical arm) perpetually on the run from the corporation that created him. It was created by Doug TenNapel, who you may also know as the original creator of Earthworm Jim. Anyway, it was an excellent, excellent cartoon. Too bad that, by that point, absolutely no one watched CBS' saturday morning lineup, which is evidenced by the fact that the following season, all of their saturday morning fare was educational.

Tom and Jerry was the best cartoon ever.

Looney toons was pretty good back in it's day, Road runner and Bugs vs Daffy = slapstick comedy at it's best.

I kinda miss the ol Disney toons as well, not to mention Duck Tails.

Possibly the greatest cartoon ever made is the episode of Tom & Jerry where they flood the kitchen and then freeze it with the fridge, and start ice skating.

Also, the old Pluto Cartoons were fucking awesome.

I used to love renting the VHS tapes out eons ago, before the local Erol's went belly up. The DVD release that's upcoming will have the whole series on it.

The best old cartoon that i wish would get a release (but never, EVER will) is King Arthur and the Knights of Justice. That was a great, great piece of TV right there.

I remember Project GeeKeR. I thought it was hilarious, the ultimate military weapon, capable of doing almost anything, was a complete moron. I think the best episode was when the military released some kind of virus that had a personality named Larry, that was some funny stuff.

GeeKer sounds really familiar. Any sites?

Inspector Gadget is coming out soon, apparently. Any takers for this? I'm passing on them because of the over abundance of goods coming out already... it's just too much.

Why do these network pile everything on so close together. It's a good thing in a way but there's just too much for anybody who isn't living off of interest to get.

Favorite cartoon is Ed, Edd, and Eddy. As far as older series, I would have liked to see Pirates of Dark Water wrap up. *-neo

Did any of you guys ever see Mighty Max?

It had a talking super genius chicken from a lost race of people, a kid who was the bearer of an ancient mystical baseball cap :wtf: ( yeah they almost lost me on that one too) that was passed down through generations of his family ( it could teleport him anywhere on the planet), and the boys guardian - a huge bad ass dude with a sword whos been alive since the Ice Age. The guardian had a cool backstory in that throughout time, legends had been written about him in different eras/countries - like in Norway he was known as Thor, England he was Little John, in Europe he was Hercules, etc. In one episode he even grouped up with other longtime [apparently immortal] literary characters - like Beowulf, Hanuman the monkey king,and some old Native American Shaman (Geronimo? I have no clue).In certain parts of the show it would seem like the writers would want the guy to just cut a swath through anything that crossed the boy, but most of the time he would just end of hitting the freaks/monsters with the butt of his sword :\

Anyways, I thought it was different and not too bad at the time. But,unfortuneately the videogame was the most horrid piece of manure Ive ever laid hands on...

I vaguely remember the cartoon, and it was kind of enjoyable in a "so bad, it's good" kind of way. Much like the Darkstalkers cartoon.

what about fraggle rock.

I remember fraggle rock. That stupid old fraggle would always go on these long journeys and because he was so stupid everything would amaze him. From a garbage truck to a mailbox, he stood in awe.

That, or he didn't know what a garbage truck to a mailbox was.

Exosquad should be released on DVD. Really nice story for a toy franchise show, unfortunately pared with bad animation.

Cartoon Net's Toonami is going prime-time mid-April. The new block will be called Miguzi (I don't know how they got that name either). The shows include Totally Spies (blech), the new TMNT, Teen Titans and a very interesting-looking French show called Code LYOKO.

Not much is known about LYOKO. There hasn't been much press on it outside of France yet. Here's a blurb from a discussion about it on toonzone.net. This may be from one of the production crew, I'm not sure though:

Aside from pooping (i'm assuming they take dumps), I dont think they really had garbage. Madam Trashheap was made by those big ass trolls I think. Mail? They had something to say, they walked their ass to whoever they needed to talk to. They never really went into how big FR was. Didn't seem very big to me, but there was a lot of tunnels that they didn't inhabit.

There's something about the combination of animated series and ruining someones life that makes me instantly buy in to anything.

I was in to it for a little bit. This was when I was in my "i'm growing out of cartoons" faze of childhood. Little did I know it would never come to be... mainly because I'm actually getting in to animation and so completely childish in psychy.

I remember the cool action sequences and for some reason a Zeplin episode really sticks in my mind. I always remember that there were a hell of a lot of explosions in this show.

Gargoyles was great, I used to watch it every morning before school.

Today I was at Target and noticed that they have a season one boxset for Spongebob. I've only seen it on tv a few times, but I've heard it from my sister watching it (the voices are so irritating) several times. I think I would like the show enough to pick it up.

We need Rocko's Modern Life on dvd...

Sponge Bob can be the most hilarious and the most annoying show. You'll be laughing one minute and the next you'll be looking for the closest available noose.

I know it aired on the Cartoon Network in their very early years.

This show mainly came to mind because it was the first cartoon I saw in which the word hell was said. :/

But, it seemed to take quirky and funny jabs at the politcal world. Like one character who was an overly outraged hippie rat, always attending some protest and such. :lol:

Whatever happened to that new Ghostbuster show? I liked it from what I saw of it in the morning. Then it just disappeared... that's weird.

The Lilo and Stitch one on Disney is pretty good as well.

I've noticed the best movie to series conversions are when they stick as close as possible to everything that happened in the movies, and espically when the movies leave themselves open to "further adventures".

Aladdin did it well because well, he's Aladdin and the Arabian times were full of fun adventures. Lilo and Stitch do it well by having them try and capture all the rest of the experiments that got loose.

I remember a cartoon with the mighty ducks, but they were big alien hockey playing ducks.

Good to see more Aladdin cartoon fans here. I liked the few eps I saw of the Timon and Pumba cartoon, too.

My comment was fact, not conjecture.

Extremely Random thoughts:

- Toms and Jerry sucks.

- Project Geeker sucks, Earthworm Jim was fantastic though.

- Freakazoid, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, Road Rovers, Histeria, et al suck.

- Inspector Gadget sucks.

- Almost every 80's cartoon really sucks (sad but true, not even nostalgia can save this crap), especially Thunder Cats and GI Joe.

- Mighty Max was fucking fantastic. This was one of the best cartoons of that era, it also had this awesome theme song/intro sequence.

- Towards the late 1990's the team of Jeff Kline, Duane Cappizzi and some other dude managed to pull out some of the best cartoons of the 90's: Men in Black, Jackie Chan Adventures and the incredibly amazingly fantastic yet extremely underrated Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot. They only fucked up twice with Godzilla and Max Steel.

- Batman and Superman had an amazing run during the 90's.

- Batman Beyond was a great show that I don't think ever got the respect it deserved.

- I used to watch Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century for the sole reason that it used to put me to sleep, and despite this, I actually enjoyed it.

- MainFrame animation from canada put out some excellent shows with Reboot and Beast Wars. Beast Machines was meh, but Wars was top quality. Their Voltron and War Planets show sucked though.

- Speaking of CG shows, one series that very few people have seen that was actually pretty cool was Starship Troops: Roughnecks.

- I hate this trend of animators using flash to put animation on tv, shows like Mucha Lucha look horrible, that damn motion tweened bobbing animation style annoys me.

- The shows that used to air on The Disney Afternoon have not aged well. I find that Ducktales and Darkwing Duck grate on my nerves, and the shows that I used to hate back then like bonkers and goof troop are a billion times worse now.

- When you look back on it, Gargoyles was a really interesting show, they put plotlines and odd references to things that really go above kids heads. Remember that episode when the fat one shot Eliza? That was some heavy shit. Too bad the Goliath Chronicles on ABC sucked.

- Speaking of Disney, Kim Possible is a decent show but I never got into it, Recess is great, and I used to think the Weekenders sucked ass, but it started to grow on me. Pepperann is garbage though.

- As for Nickelodeon,Sponge Bob is really hit or miss with me, I do enjoy the Fairly Odd Parents, Invader Zim is arguably the best thing the channel has produced, I always did like the angry beavers, I've found that I'd rather watch the newer updated doug than the old school nick episodes, Rugrats wore thin with me years ago and this new grown up show they have sucks, Rocko is still cool, Pelswick is the stupidest fucking cartoon, Kablam is an interesting show because I always enjoyed the henry and june hosting segments more than the crappy shorts they would show, and theres other crap I can't remember.

- Remember that Where in the World is Carmen Sandiago cartoon? Man, that was so terrible.

- Despite what I said before, the real ghost busters cartoon still holds up.

- Biker Mice from Mars and the Cowboys of Moo Mesa were awful.

- Toonami was mentioned before, it's been said a hundred times before, I wish they would air more nonanime stuff. But it doesn't really matter since I haven't sat down to watch it in ages.

- The Justice League cartoon really has come around, it used to be trash but now it's great.

- Samurai Jack is great.

- Totally Spies isn't great, but it isn't pure garbage either.

- This is so obscure, there used to be this cartoon about monkies that used to pilot a space ship and have adventures, what the hell was that crap called?

- The Hulk, Iron Man and Fantastic Four mid 90's cartoons were really bad.

- The Silver Surfer's cartoon only ran on Fox Kids for a single season, but it was great while it lasted.

- The Magic School Bus used to annoy the hell out of me.

- USA Network's old line up was crap: Savage Dragon, Wing Commander, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter (I believe this was a cartoon, right?). And the Cartoon Express wasn't that great either: Denver the Last Dinosaur, Dinosaucers, GoBots.

- Any one remember those old Sports Cartoons shorts Nickelodeon used to show that starred a cat and a hippo, and the cat would always get owned by the hippo in every sport imaginable, even hot air ballooning.

- Cartoon Network has put out some decent original shows but I don't feel like going into that.

- Undergrads is a great show, very funny and under rated.

- Dilbert sucks.

- MTV has put out some great animation over the years, such as aeon flux, the max and the aforementioned Undergrads.

- Duckman is still enjoyable.

- That new lilo and stitch cartoon is trash.

- That Gary and Mike claymation show was stupid but I watched it anyway, same goes for celebrity deathmatch.

- Baby Blues was so bad.

- Mission Hill is fantastic.

- The House of Mouse is oddly enough, a very intelligently written show.

- It's amazing how timeless some of the old looney tunes shorts are, despite how many times I've seen bugs and daffy's "rabbit season" routine it still makes me laugh.

- Clerks: You either love it or hate it, and I could see why you could dislike it, but I think it's fantastic.

- That new Masters of the Universe cartoon was one of the worst shows ever.

- Static Shock, Wayne Head and C Bear and Jamal all sucked.

Anyone remember the claymation show Bump in the Night? I think it was on ABC. Great animation on that show, I used to love it (the main character was a small green monster with purple dots/warts that had lobster like eyes named Bumpy).

I'd like to see more Reboot too. Didn't Cartoon Network air the last season that ABC dropped (but it was aired in Canada). It was different from the norm, the characters grew up by the last season. I remember seeing the last episode on ABC and being amazed because it was such a cliff hanger episode. It was fucking years before I saw the last season.

I hated that bump in the night show, as well as it's fellow ABC trash: Cro the caveman and Pirates of Darkwater.

Yeah, the end of season 3 of reboot shows some of townfolk putting on a play that recaps the entire seasons, its a very well done and funny peice of animation. After that cartoon network aired Daemon's Rising which was a Reboot Movie that aired in canada first.

Woohoo!! Another Mission Hill fan here. Baby Blues was okay for soulless animation. The Iron Man cartoon was something I could only enjoy at about 6:30 in the morning before school, it was great to wake me, and my brain was still to groggy to see all of the many, many flaws. The 90s' Spidey cartoon was hit-or-miss, but it hit more than missed for me. The Fairly Oddparents is genius, I love it.

Two other cartoons that I dont think were mentioned that were the roxor were that Dungeons and Dragons one and Disney's Gummi Bears.. yeah,yeah, you heard me the fucking gummi bears. Mostly because that bad dude with the curly mustache who controlled the ogres was funny as hell I thought. The way he'd always kick the little green one around and boss these big dumb ass ogres around would get a chuckle out of me.That and the animation and action was always more than halfway decent ,surprisingly, for a cartoon with such a gay name.

Dungeons and Dragons always had some way out fantasy stories filled with some action that made them enjoyable. The way all of the teens had different weapons and powers and had to learn how to use them to come out on top was always cool to watch.I so wanted that archer guys' energy bow when I was a wee tot. Did they ever make a final episode where those kids got home - back through that amusement park or anything? I thought that I remember seeing one , and that big badass winged guy on the flying demonhorse chased them through and started tearing shit up....

I remember Reboot. For some reason its airing up here in Canada wasn't as consistent as it should've been. Beast Wars was great as well. I liked Animaniacs a lot.

I was briefly interested by that show, and it lasted two seasons. The SNES game based on it was pretty neat.

2 seasons, but canned on short notice in the middle of the second season, so the show didn't even get a chance to finish.

I was just thinking that there ought to be a network that plays all these shows. There's so many cartoon programs that are awesome and could make for awesome TV, and since most of them are like 30 minutes long, you can fit around like 48 episodes or shows in a day, maybe a little bit less if you have informercials on at night.

Things like Justice League, Batman Beyond, The Gummy Bears, Thundercats, etc. Maybe on Tuesday have an 80's throwback night with Gummy bear, Thundercats, GI Joe, Transformers, and Astroboy. It could kind of be a cartoon network for older people, but it can also market to the younger audience too.

Someone should do this.

Well, considering WB owns Cartoon Network and Batman Beyond was made by WB, that ain't gonna happen, and even less so on JL because that was made specifically for Cartoon Network. Likewise with Gummi Bears and Disney.

I dunno, I think Adult Swim is as close as we're gonna get for the time being. Between CN, Disney, and Nick, somebody already has the rights to most of the stuff that would be ideal for a network like that, and the 'toons that aren't liscenced don't have enough of a following/ haven't held up well enough to carry a network.

And Regus, stop acting like the Pope of What People Should and Shouldn't Like. Not that I don't agree with a lot of your points, but the way you present them as canon law is incredibly irritating.

I liked that Spiderman show. It seemed to have a really really long run too. Although that Peter Parker design did look too blue chipper.

I mean... shows like Futurama, The Simpsons and Family Guy are all licensed to other stations. They're just not shown at the same time and they're not the newest and latest episodes. It would be so easy to make one in Canada as opposed to the states (we don't get WB, CN, or the Disney Channel.

This is also why Space Channel up here in Canada is so awesome. You get Deep Space Nine, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Next Generation, Angel and Star Gate all in a row. It's almost self destructive to watch all of it.

Old Tom and Jerry is the best.

Tom and Jerry Kids however, is utter trash.

We have a channel like that here, called Boomerang (I think it's still alive), and it hosts alot of the 80's shows. Last time I saw it, it had G. I Joe and Thundercats, but it's restricted to what Cartoon Network can and can't get the rights to.

Good luck EVER seeing Transformers G1 on TV again, I've read that whoever has the license for it wants a boatload of cash to show it on tv, I guess to not take away from the dvd sales. I'd assume that's what stops CN from getting alot of these older 80's shows, they just don't have the budget to spring for this type of stuff that only a small percent of their audience will really enjoy.

What made it set apart from other "future" versions of superheroes is that it actually acknowledged the character's "present" incarnation in the storyline and avoided the cliche of having the hero to fight other future versions of villains all the time ("look, it's Scarecrow from the future"), aside from the reocurring Jokers-wannabes. See, for a network like I suggested you could EASILY have a great superhero block. I'll do my superhero block from like 1 - 5 or something.

3 - Teen Titans
3:30 - Justice League
4 - The 90's X-Men cartoon
4:30 - X-Men Evolution

I didn't even get into any of the others. Not to mention at night time you could just do something like Adult Swim. But who knows. Maybe change some of the shows during the week. Like have a 2 hour superhero block but alternate some shows in. Like the old Hulk in place of the old Spiderman.

Or for an 80's cartoon block do what I said with Transformers, GI. Joe, Thundercats, etc. Probably not plausable, but hell, it'd be a lot better than the shit card games/clone of card games they play on all networks nowadays. And if the network took off I'd probably try to expand in my own animation studio.

1 - The Real Ghostbusters
1:30 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
2 - Thunder Cats
2:30 - Astroboy
3 to 4 - Transformers (full hour)
4 - G.I. Joe
4:30 - He-Man

Then in another block you could have other action shows like Samurai Jack, Dexters Lab, etc.

I found it really funny that about a year or so ago, fox tried to reair that show, and acted like it was NEW. The show is as old as the hills, and they were trying to resale it to little kids. Stupid dickheads.

You do realize that to get these shows, it costs money? And since Cartoon Network is only a cable station, their budget isn't exactly very big?

When they did show G.I Joe, ratings for it were very low, that's why you don't see it on TV all that often while Cowboy Bebop is NEVER going to leave the channel. CN spends their budget on anime for adult swim, shows for miguzi, shows for toonami, and the CN originals.

After that, it dosen't necessarily leave them alot of room. And for them to get G1 Transformers, well, they'd need a shitload of cash for that one. When it comes to the other 80's shows, they scored ratings significantly lower than "new" shows, anime, and comedy, so CN just dosen't waste the money to get the licenses.

I loved Batman Beyond as well. Cool setting, interesting stories, more darker atmosphere than other Batman show. From what I recalled, people actually died in this one, which is plus, and something different from rest of animation aimed at children.

Well, in GI Joe's defense, the reruns were only shown during late nights and were heavily underpromoted when they did. Considering that, it actually did quite well since it was only test run of the show to see how a new CGI series might do at Cartoon Network.

And speaking of which, did anyone else think that Spy Troops: The Movie sucked ass? I'm aware the original Sunbow show wasn't Shakespearce either, but it might as well had been when compared to the Spy Troops mess. I seriously can't believe Larry Hama had his name attached to the project.

Yeah. That's the only way you can tell that Larry Hama wrote this, when he wrote the original Marvel comic, it was basically all about Snake-Eyes (he's the reason why Cobra Commander came to be in the first place). By the end of the Marvel series, virtually everyone was a freaking Arashiikage ninja or related to one.

Some said that Larry Hama was forced to dumb down the script for Spy Troops, but the Frontline arc written by him wasn't that great either.

Could be. A lot of the old liscences are pretty dumbed down when they make a new show. Transformers has been getting dumber and dumber sense its orginal release.
