Acts of Stupidity in The Art of Purchasing

I'm sure we all have a story from childhood when we had saved up our allowances and paper route money only to waste it on a goddawful game or worse, a console that failed soon after. I'm sure many of us have stories from just recently too, well it's time to drag them all out and see who's the biggest loser. I'll go first.

When I first bought my Saturn(no that wasn't the mistake) I went out on a buying frenzy like we all do when we get a new system. I picked up a few worthy titles and all was going well until I came across 'it', the single worst game I have ever bought, 'it' being the one and only Criticom. Yes I bought Criticom and I was really looking forward to playing it. I biked back home in a frenzy, ran up to my room and ripped the disc from the case, salivating and panting like an animal, then quickly popped it into my Saturn. I had heard good things about this game, a kid I knew(who was a compulsive liar) had supposedly played and enjoyed it thoroughly. Up comes a video, seems cool enough, then the character select screen, again cool, then an actual match. "Wow, this is.. complete shit." The graphics were a blocky mess for starters but what really got to me was the fact that your characters were seemingly fighting in some kind of invisible tub of fudge, that's the only way I can describe it. I had played Battle Arena Toshinden by this time and that game seemed godly in comparison, that's how bad Criticom is. And as I ripped the game out of my Saturn before it's crappiness could spread I could only think of how I was totally ripped off, and here's the kicker, it only cost me $10. That was nothing, I had spent much more on mediocre games in the past, but somehow in the face of pure digitalized evil it was everything. I still have the game tucked away in my closet, seperated from the rest of my Saturn games, waiting for the day when it can be shown to someone I truly despise.

There was also the time I saw an SNES2 with Yoshi's Island for $30CDN at Superstore and didn't buy it because it looked kiddy. I think I picked up Street Fighter 2 CE for my Genesis instead, so it wasn't a total loss.

Jurassic Park on 3DO. I have never returned a game as quickly as I have that one. It was a matter of an hour before I caught the next bus to the mall.

PaTaank, also 3DO, wasn't as bad but also went back. It was a neat idea, first-person pinball, but I beat the game on my first playthrough and it wasn't that hot the first time.

Resident evil Duel shock edition. I was hoping to get some new stuff with this, but the X-files music just drove me off the wall. Got more ticked off then anything when I paid $40 for it and still cost me $12 to exchange it for a used copy of RE:director's cut.

The only game I can remember ever having saved up my allowance to purchase was Mega Man 3, so I don't have stories to tell concerning bad purchases. I do remember, however, that my brother and I had to combine several weeks worth of allowance in order to get the game, and when my mom took us to TRU to buy it, we were still four dollars short. My brother and I knew my mom wasn't going to foot the remainder of the bill, because she had said so before we left, so we quitely asked our younger sister (who didn't know any better) to lend us the money, and we promised to pay her back.

My sister ended up lending us the money, and we had the game for two whole days before my mother had found out what we did. In a frothing rage she ripped the game from our NES, flew to the TRU we had purchased it from, and was quickly, but politely refused the return. It was opened product, after all.

When she got home, she gave the game back to us, but we were grounded from playing the NES for somewhere near two months for "decieving" our sister.

But, hey, it was only two months, and Mega Man is forever. ;)

I bought Mortal Kombat Trilogy for N64 for $80.

I somehow managed to sell it for $25+ back in 2001.

Back in the old days before the internet, you had to rely on
gaming mags and word of mouth for reviews, so there's would
always be a chance of a game being poor. The games I was
most disapointed in were the ones I finished the day I got
them.

I paid $85 for Crusin USA, all the N64 games when they first
came out in such short supplies had obcense prices.

I, a year or so back when Rayman 3 was coming out, snagged Rayman Arena* for GameCube thinking that it was the third game in the series. I remembered it having a subtitle and "Arena" just sounded like it could be it.

And then I played it. And found the truth.

Chameleon Twist for N64. That is an awful game. And I paid $70+tax for it at Best Buy.

PowerBlade on the NES. Used money my brother and I pretty much never had to buy that crap.

Sold the PS2 version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy to trade in for the N64's no loading version. How was I suppose to know the 64 version sucked?

Dodonpachi and Doom for the saturn, both shittiest ports ever. I dont really count much before puberty because I was too young to know better.

Although I did buy "A boy and his blob" when I was like 7.

Mechassault, MotoGp2 and Wolfenstein are really good. I played the hell outta Wolfenstein online.

Stretch Panic, bought it for the full $50 when it came out because it was Treasure and GameGO hailed it as the best thing since Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies. The subsequent horror is something that will haunt me to the end of days...

The kicker? The guy at GS actually offered to let me return it but I TURNED HIM DOWN because I kept thinking it would get better. I didn't think it was possible for me to be that naive at age 21 at the time... :bang:

I remember the buzz on these boards about Stretch Panic before it was released. Good thing I thought the game looked fucking stupid and didnt believe the hype. Even when the reviews started coming out people here still thought it was going to be awesome and said the reviews didnt know what they were talking about. Stupid Treasure fanboys.

I snagged Stretch Panic for $4.99 roughly 4-6 months after it was released. Not a bad game for 5 bucks (had a few laughs pulling on them massive titties), but 50? Damn.

Perfect Dark.

Although I wouldn't call it my stupidity. I figured it at least had to be good given the 9's and 10's EGM gave it. I never bought the mag ever again.

I liked Mechassault and Gunvalkyrie... oh, and Power Blade too. :(

I also felt burned when I paid $5 for Stretch Panic. I had heard little about the actual game, and plenty of hype... and was incredibly dismayed to find that whatever gameplay there was, it was horrible. Usually when I buy a used game covered in stickers I'll clean it up and Goo-Gone the packaging... no. Not Stretch Panic. I think I did remove one of the stickers, though, and the sticky spot left by it was soon filled in by dust.

Um... I paid $20 for Panzer Dragoon Saga once, jeez, what was I thinking? :p No, no, that's not right. I paid $130 for Seiken Densetsu 3 when it was new, that one stung. First and last thing I ordered out of the back of an issue of Gamefan. I like the game a lot, though I still like SoM better. I do go back and play it now and then, but I feel that very few games, if any, will give you $130 worth of enjoyment. I did, however, get a cheesy little converter for free with it, which was a nice deal, because back then, though my SNES was tab-free, nobody wanted me to modify their units just to play SFC games, and I wasn't about to drill my carts.

The $130 SD3 would hurt more when in the years following, I attained a copy of Front Mission for 3 floppy disks with a copy of trueSpace 2 on them, Gun Hazard for $20, and a number of other games for next to nothing.

I've purchased a ton of shitty games in my day. I need to think about this one.

For about a year (most of 1991), I oogled at the Dragon Warrior II sitting on the shelf at Babbages. Thing was, it owned all the other games on the shelf, price-wise. 60 bucks. So my birthday rolls around next year, and I get a ton of birthday money (I usually didn't). I had $100 to spend. Straight to Babbages I went. I snatched that fucker... er, DW2, off the shelf, and almost forgot that I had about $35 more to spend. Babbages NES section wasn't the monstrosity it used to be, but I still had a lot of games to choose from (even though I can't remember specifics). What game did I pick?

Tetris. :wtf: No Ninja Gaiden 2 or Bionic Commando or Battle of Olympus or Life Force... fucking Tetris. I can't offer an explanation on that one, so I hang my head in shame.

Omega, which version of Tetris was it? If it is the Nintendo version, then yah, that sucked.

I had a Sega CD. I'm not sure how I pulled that one off on my mom (must have been christmas) and in ther persuit of finding a good game, I was torn between Eternal Champions (which I had played and loved) and that FMV fighting game (from that company that was all about FMV. Made tom cat alley and shit). I remember picking it out from a magazine (might have actually been gamefan). God damn it that was stupid. That shit was terrible and cost like 55 bucks. I distinctly remember looking at the magazine and debating on which one I should get. Annoys me to this day.

Yep, Battle of Olympus was an awesome Zelda 2-ish adventure with its own roman style. I remember those boots that let you walk upside down were neat. Who made that game? Did they do anything else of note? I think it was published by Broderbund but I don't know if they developed stuff too... Too bad I lent it to a friend and never got it back.

I've always been careful about what I buy even though I buy tons of games. I also love games so much that I rarely play something I consider to be utterly worthless; there's almost always a redeeming quality to be found (but again, I'm relatively careful so I never really play stuff like Criticom).

Maybe the first Broken Sword for PSX. That was like $40 and I wasted so much time trying to like it but god, if ever there was a port that sucked. I have and used the Sony mouse too so there's no excuse. The game itself wouldn't have been stellar even on the PC what with its walkthrough-required puzzles, but struggling through the loading issues on the PSX was particularly gruesome. I'm actually playing through the sequel now on PC and really enjoying it.

x-men nes. Back in the day i only got a new game once or twice a year, so when my birthday came around, my father sent me $50. At that point, walking into Toys R Us made me feel like the world was my oyster. My older brother kept pointing out games that were really good, like Metal Storm, Shatterhand, etc., but oh know, I picked x-men because we read the comics. Needless to say, an hour after we got home and my parents left, my older brothers whupped my ass for being so dumb.

One Christmas back in the NES days I was bought a "surprise" game by my nan, She asked the store assistants which game was popular etc (basically they lied and sold her something they couldn't sell) and I ended up removing the wrapping paper and had Festers Quest staring at me.

I don't actually remember buying any sucky game or spending too much on anything. I've never had dollars to toss around so I was always moderately careful with purchases. I waited until well after launch to buy things and asked everyone I could. Even shit my dad bought like South Park for the N64 was fun as hell, playing it with him.

I'd have to say my worst buy was spending 45 for Zelda- Majora's Mask and then the 20 or whatever for that damn Jumper Pack thing. The game sucked, and I never needed that pointless little addition ever again. And to make it worse, I bought a copy for a friend out of my own money, too. AND ANOTHER JUMPER PACK.

I didn't really have any shitty purchases, even when me and my brother had an NES and SNES I picked good games just based on looks while he asked for shitty ones. I asked for Zelda and he wanted Back to the Future, I asked for Street Fighter 2 and he wanted Monopoly. He didn't really like games after that....

Possibly the worst game purchase ever made was revolution x for the saturn...god what was i thinking.I had a dream i had the game and i was enjoying the hell out of it but when i actually bought the damn thing 5 min into it i had to turn the fucking thing off.But the last thing i'll always remember and is burned in the back of my mind for all eternity is....eat the rich!

I didn't have much luck with that thing. The rest of the shitty games I've bought were for really cheap prices, usually to see how bad they are. I should've picked up Shaq-Fu for 50 cents yesterday.

As a young fellow, I saved up my money and did my "research" and somehow ended up with the Atari Jaguar. If I recall, at launch, that thing went for $300. There were enough cool games that I didn't regret it too much (finding a sucker to buy it off me for $120 by the time Playstation came out helped some), but boy did I call that one wrong.

Actually, I had a pretty good time with it, but the lack of games and the quick evaporation certainly left a bad taste.

My dad saw an ad for the Jaguar in a magazine, and he wanted to buy it for us. I told him no, and pointed to the N64.

I could pwn this thread with the quickness by mere mention of the amount of coin I dropped on Rakugaki Showtime. I don't regret it though. That money would have left me one way or another. The only way Rakugaki will is if it gets stolen or my house burns down.

Now that a remember i won an auction in ebay for a panzer dragoon saga for a heavy amount of dinero and i never got the game.Its already been 3 years and til this day i still go to my mailbox hoping someday it would arrive. :cry:

Wilykat gave me a copy of Castlevania 64 a while back. I didn't pay for it, but I still felt like I got the shitty end of the deal.

Back in the Genesis days, I purchased Slaughter Sport because its two-page ad had a big quote that read "Better than Street Fighter!" Boy, was that one of biggest lies I've ever read during my childhood.

The fighting system wasn't great and the character designs were horrible (a gargoyle who farts and a fat man with a face on his stomach were some of the notable fighters). What was really insulting about the game is that it tried to pass pallette-swapped fighters as new characters. The only interesting thing was this giant green monster would come up from the ground and eat your fighter if you lost the battle.

From then on, I learned to never EVER purchase a game based on its advertisement.

The awesome part of my day is that I went out to a local game store I happened to notice while I was out, and there was a copy of Battle of Olympus with box and manual for only 6.99. It was just weird after reading about it right before I left, magically finding it there.

Can't wait to try it out, looking at the back of the box reminded me how much I wanted to play it as a kid but never could. Plus this thread reminded me. Probably wouldnt have got it if it wasn't for the memory jolt.

I bought WAY too many games in my life to remember anything bad I purchased long ago, but I have a recent one.... Unlimited SaGa.

I was a huge fan on the original SaGa Frontier. I'm part of a small group of people that liked that game (and still do). I even help write one of the FAQs for the game thats on GameFAQs (said FAQ was the reason I bought the game, even after seeing all the negative reviews). Anyway, once I've seen the screenshots of U.Saga, and the nice artwork, I decided to give it a chance. Once the reviews started to roll in, and everyone was bashing it because it was "different" and "odd", it increased my want for it as the first one was blasted for the same reasons. Boy, I should've paid better attention to those reviews, because as we all know, it had to be one of the worst games ever created since the history of the universe. I almost confused it for a CDI game a few times. Anyway, I played it a total of 3 times, and now it sits collecting dust.

You'll have a good time with Battle of Olympus, I really liked that one back in the day. With box & instructions for $7 is probable the best sub-$10 purchase you'll make this week.

You think owning Tao Feng is bad? Well I'm still going to buy Kakuto Chojin some day, simply for it's recall status. I really need a copy of the game just because of the stupid reason it got recalled.

Back in the olden days before the web, I blew $60+ on Secret of Evermore for the SNES. I mistook it for a sequel to Secret of Mana, but it was just some half-baked turd squeezed out by Square USA to cash in on Mana. When Square lost a boatload of money on the FF movie, I chalked it up to karma and laughed myself into a seizure.

I paid 65 bucks USD for Quake 3 (without the tin box mind you) when it was 2 months old. But I do stupid things all the time. I've been known to buy games, get rid of them, and buy them again.

Oh come on now. The Saturn Dodonpachi has a perfectly good TATE mode and the only graphical difference I see from the original is the pixilated explosions. You're going to slap it with the title of "shittiest port ever" because of some scalled up explosion sprites?

Biggest dissapointment ever? Hmmm.... The first Madden Football on the SNES for one. I remember huge praise over the Genny version, and I was/am a huge Tecmobowl fan. Tecmo it was not...

also, back during the MK1 craze, right when the console versions came out, I had to get it on release day no matter what. At the time, being a Nintendo fanboy, i was anticipating the lackluster snes version. So I called all over the place and no one had it in stock but the local wal-mart but it was 74.99 and I only had 50, I literally went door to door to all my friends houses trying to bum money with a 2 for 1 payback.

Finally I get the extra 30+ dollars, head over, pick up my copy and head home in delight. I ripped it open, popped it in, configured the controller, and started playing the first match. My jaw dropped open, and I literally was in disbelief.

I did not know at that point that Nintendo refused to include blood to keep it kid friendly. I looked for the option everywhere, when I couldnt find it I ran to the store and confirmed in their magazine section what at the time was my worst horror. I was already screwed because walmart wouldnt return open games, so I just swallowed the pain, picked up the controller once again and continued to play the SNES version for years thereafter.

If I learned any one thing that came from that experience, it's that I will never again borrow money with a 2 for 1 payback, that damn cart cost me over 100 bucks in the end.

How could you have possibly missed all of the pre-release hoopla over the SNES MK1 censors?!

Anyway, I got that one on release day as well, and was quite happy with it.

Mortal Kombat II on the Saturn.

I had only enough $$ for one game, and my choice was between Street Fighter Alpha and MKII- two arcade games I loved. The Babbages employee told me that Saturn MKII was arcade perfect. He told me that the entire arcade intro was intact and that there was no loading for Shang Tsung transformations. I bought the game on his advice.

When I got home and saw that Saturn MKII was garbage, I actually cried...

I've never been so pwn3d in my entire life :(

I am still baffled how the SNES MKII was that much better than....well any other version really.

I bought a PCFX for $180 and Zeriogar for $130.
Exactly $309.00 more than I felt they were worth after I played it.

Let's see.... Well here in Michigan lower east that is there is only one import shop that sell lots of games. We like to call him "Min the Merciless". He's a cool guy, but his prices are shit and if you are in desparate need for something you will pay for it and that's where my story comes in. I wasn't in desparate need for Strider 2 for psx, but when I saw him playing it in his store I had to have it. So I shelled out 70 bucks for the game and take it home to play it only to find out that it detected my mod chip and didn't want to work. So, I drive back to this store and tell him about it and I get a new mod chip installed for 40 bucks to play thru this fucking easy ass game. Months fly by and Strider 2 gets released in the US for a whole whopping 29.99. Had I waited I wouldn't have shelled out 120 bucks to play thru a half hour game. Not all things are bad from Min, I did manage to snag a copy of Radiant Silvergun before it was sought after by all for only 60 bucks

Oh jeez, this brings back a sore memory that slipped my mind until now. Remember when EB stores stocked a small number of Saturn imports? Yeah, my EB had Radiant Silvergun for $60. DBZ Legends was marked down to $40 or $50, and having wanted to play it fearing it would go fast, I grabbed it... I thought nobody would have picked up RS, who in middle of nowhere, PA gave a shit about shooters?

I went back the next time I had money and RS was nowhere to be found. If not for buying the area's last copy of PDS for $20 new, I don't know if I ever would have been able to look at my Saturn the same way again. Scoring a Netlink complete with full copies of Virtual On and Sega Rally for $5 wasn't bad either, but hardly something to make up for passing up RS for a decent price.

When I got my PSX, I went out picked up Syndicate Wars and Wing Commander IV; both games I'd played on PC before and really enjoyed. Shitty stripped down version of both, they were. I also bought Saga Frontier which is compete shit, and Legand of Mana which was mostly shit. Did I mention the time I passed on both Xenogears and Metal Gear Solid, and chose to buy Rogue Trip instead? Man I was a dumbshit when it came to buying PSX games. Chalk it up to me having my first job, and actually buying lots of games instead of renting them.

That and I got a 32x around the time the thing launched. Well, I got it as a christmas present so it doesn't really count. I still havn't bought any games for it. The best thing about it was that I rented Doom from blockbuster, had it overdue for a week, and never got charged a late fee.

Ok, it might not be THAT bad of a port, but if you play the arcade one, then go play the saturn one, you will wonder what went wrong.
I add it to the list because I was SO looking forward to it, I shelled out $50 to play a bad port of a game I had on MAME......

The 32X rev has sharper graphics, but the music is still the god-awful Genny stuff...and there are still too many missing sound effects.
