Some Valkyrie Profile Questions...

I just got a copy of VP from an ebay auction, and I just wanted to make sure a couple things aren't going wrong...
- When the controlled character, be it Valkyrie or another, ascends or descends a slope, the character doesn't move as smoothly as he does when walking or running along flat ground or when jumping. Is this normal?
- In that first dungeon, when they use a CG scene over the background to show a door opening, it looked like it had a bit more green-ish in it than the background and stood out more than it probably should have. Again, is this normal?
Otherwise, everything else is fine. I didn't want to leave this guy feedback until I knew what was going on with this.

Your game is fine. I used to hate the stutter stepping on slopes, but you'll get used to it.

Enjoy the game, man. It's the best there is.

FMV integration during the game tends to be a bit off-looking at times, yes. And yes, you'll get used to the slopes as CV said. This is one of the best games ever.

Is this game really that good? I have passed it up a couple of times at my local EB-it's only 20 dollars. The fighting system looks pretty cool. Is it all 2-D fighting?

I meant the fighting system. An example would be Tales of Destiny 2, it has 2-D sprites when you are in enemy encounters. Sorry for the confusion. :\

It's one of the best RPG there is...sadly I'm sure EB charges much more than $20 for it now.

VP kicks the shit out of every other PSone RPG, and on every console as well.

EB's prices for PS1 stuff are so out of whack. It's like they get a popular game traded in and think people are going to pay 65 dollars for a used copy. So if it's a good and old game, it's probably not 20 bucks (anymore).

I dunno. It's almost like 2D fighting. Kind of 2D turn based fighter. If you figure each character is a limb, you kinda have to time it correctly for a good combo to get those gem thingy's and recharge the magic users meter.

I still don't have it...

There always ebay (~$40 doesnt seem so bad) but im not the trusting type. its those few rotten ebay-ers that spoil the whole bunch.

If you're lucky you can find the game at TRU for no more than $20.

I've owned the game about 3 or 4 times now, and being able to find it on the cheap for subsequent repurchases is a good thing.

Sleeve is right. It's the best RPG ever, on any system.

And just to put you all at ease, I'll never get rid of it again. I even have the strat. guide that I got for free a few years ago.

hmmm guess ill have to pick this one up. i keep getting it confused witht that one rpg that was covered in GameGo that ended up being a turn (Hoshigami?).

Hoshigami is the subpar SRPG you're thinking of.

And Valkyrie Profile is a good game, though not the best RPG ever imo. I also found the serious, and sometimes depressing story to be not exactly to my liking.

Pass the sugar-coated anime-styled RPGs please.

What about Thousand Arms? I saw that game yesterday at EB for 15 dollars. Has anybody played it? The dating system looks intriging...

Thousand Arms is...eh. I borrowed it from Joe, and from what I've played so far, it's marginally funny, but the animation is pretty bad. I personally liked the dating system in Azure Dreams better.

On a side note, I won a factory sealed Valkyrie Profile about a week and a half ago on ebay. Set me back 95 bucks. For a game that I borrowed 3 years ago and played to death, that's saying something. Grab them now, children.

PS- I will be royally pissed if they re-release this game.

...and, yes, animegirl. Fun game. Different battle system, though... not for everyone.

If your idea of a good RPG involves exploring at your leisure then avoid Valkyrie Profile as it punishes you for doing that. It's a beautiful game in many ways, especially in its artwork, but I didn't like how it was designed that way. I can understand why others love it though.

The only thing that annoyed the hell out of me in VP was the dub, although it got much better a few hours in, it was still pretty bad. And the difficulty, damn, I have never come across on RPG where the zone enemies are harder then the bosses, the game kicked my ass all the way to the boss, yet I still, somehow managed to beat him.

Apart from that, yeah, its pretty amazing.

I enjoyed what I played of Thousand Arms enough.

If you enjoy quirky, japanese stylee, old-school-esque rpgs you can't go wrong for $15 imo.

Meh Valk profile has its merits. Unique battle system, lots to explore and very pretty (except the CG fuglyness)
