I was blown away by Donkey Kong Country when it first came out. Love that title screen music. Just wondering which everyone think is the best in the trilogy? I can't recall if I've ever played part 3, but I believe it had a new character and was more of the same. I prefer part 2 the best, why? Cause I spent the most time with it and had a blast with it.
I love the DKC series, with the second being my favorite, the first my second favorite, and the third bringing up the rear. I wouldn't mind seeing DK Land getting a remake, as it was quite an amazing game visually for the GB then, and now they could impliment all of the stuff they couldn't do due to the GB's lack of buttons.
definately #1. this thread is going to degenerate quickly, by the way. there are some very vocal anti-dkc types here. they're insane, of course, but the internet doesn't discriminate.

Yes but everyone on TNL hates Rare for the most part.
I agree though, the first Donkey Kong Country was great... didn't really get into the other two very much. And yes the title screen music was and still is great.
I was playing Blast Corps yesterday, that game is still great. I like part 1 the most, then 2. I never really got into 3.Quote:

I have nothing against Rare, though I can't say their last couple releases have been worth playing at length. I really enjoyed Banjo-Kazooie and Jet Force Gemini, and a few of their NES games.Quote:

I felt some small vindication when the recent GBA rehash of DKC got ripped in reviews .. and rightfully so. Take away the graphics and the game's got nothing but average platforming. It's a one-trick pony of glitz over substance, and always has been. It fooled a lot of people.
While I'm a fan of the DKC games I fully agree that they are among the most over-hyped games ever. They're good but absolutely not in the same league as the 2d Mario or Sonic games.
Rare was an awesome developer in the '80s/early '90s but they really went downhill in the N64 years.
I still can enjoy a playthrough of DKC or DKC2 on SNES, but I have no desire to buy either game again for anything. I'm not a Rare fan in the least, but I felt they were solid, fun games. No, their play mechanics didn't bring anything new to the table, but they were amusing enough for what they were.
Oh, and skelly, I dig the Tama custom title. I never did get to play that game. I remember seeing it in magazines after the Japanese PS and Saturn launches... for as much as I love to play early PS and Saturn games, as bad as some of them may be, for some reason, I haven't snatched that one up yet.
Rare's stuff in the past half-decade or so has been hit or miss. When it its, it's great, when it misses though...ouch. Blast Corps was, and is, one of the most creative games I've played. A sequel or remake of that for the Xbox 2, or 3, would be great. Banjo-Kazooie was fun, Tooie wasn't, DK 64 was fun for the first dozen hours, then went downhill. Nice boss battle though. JFG is on my must-buy list once I can actually find a copy. Grabbed by the Ghoulies made for an enjoyable demo, and I'll buy it after picking up some of the other newly-dropped Xbox games.
Was I the only one who finished DK 64? I bought it on launch, it required the expansion pack. I found every blueprint, and all the secrets. The Beetle races were so darn hard. There were two hidden games to be found too. People always bash DK 64, but the last boss battle fight is genius and worth the playthru.
Nothing short of a fabulous cash prize, a blowjob, and a refund of my rental price on top of that could have made playing through DK64 worthwhile.Quote:

Though I'm a bit older, I was also still in my super-enthusiastic phase around the dawn of 32-bit, thanks in no small part to the pseudo-idiotic yet strangely endearing rantings of GameFan. But I think it was also a genuinely fascinating time to be a gamer -- companies were getting really experimental on the powerful new hardware, and it resulted in a ton of charismatic, oddball games. Not all winners of course, but they tended to be interesting nonetheless.

I used to enjoy Donkey Kong Country, it was very unique just by it's look so i checked it out. The 2nd one was the best one, I hope that's obvious to everyone here. I remember my little cousin asked for it for his birthday and after 10 minutes i put it down, just carp.

I probably like them the best in descending order, though I can't say I played 3 that much. It seemed like more of the same, which isn't necessarily bad, I just was tired of it.
I also really liked the graphics in the first especially, even though most of Rare's designs are almost disgusting to look at. The music is awesome also.
And I really felt bad about DK64, it seemed like it would have been a good game, but they gave you way too many annoying, repetitive thigns to do. I don't know where Rare apparently gets off thinking that the longer people have to play your game the happier they are with their purchase. Even Wind Waker was semi-ruined for me because of this thinking, but that's another topic.
Never played one... I'll have to try this out sometime.
Part 2 was my favorite of the series, I felt it had the best music too. The only real problem is that stupid Diddy rap you had to listen to if you completed the level and got the item.
Nomi, avoid the GBC/GBA DKC, try to find the SNES ones. They tend to go for $15 or so at Gamestop.
What the hell were they thinking with all that rapping business? And why did Nintendo let them go through with it?
I almost shut DK64 off before I even played it because of that intro...
