Just to let you know, Dante sucks in the game. Looks cool, but that's about it. He's annoying to fight and by the time he can join, which is really late in the game, there are demons that are much much better than he is available. It was nice to utterly crush him though by lowering his attack and defense to the point where he was doing single digit damage on me while I was doing 600 per hit on him though.Quote:

Sweet, I've for the longest time thought the Persona games were pretty much the same thing, but the GMR scans got me up to speed.
Not to mention they convinced me that the game sounds awesome, and it right up my alley when it comes to RPGs.

It's a great game, but even this 'improved' version is far from perfect. The random encounters are really unbalanced. Sometimes it's one weak enemy, sometimes it's six powerful ones, sometimes it goes a while before the next one, sometimes the next attack is two steps later.Quote:

This isn't too bad for random encounters since all normal demons have weaknesses that can be easily exploited (especially by Charm, which is almost cheap to use especially when a lot of demons have it), but bosses usually have no weaknesses and are immune to at least one element. So if you face an ice boss and have no demons on hand immune to ice (as I did for one battle) you better have a heck of a lot of healing items since you'll be taking on the boss solo. If you don't, the boss is going to wipe out all of your turns by taking advantage of the weaknesses of your demons. Sure, you could go out and either recruit or fuse demons needed for the job, but that would mean trudging through the dungeon all over again.
It would have also been nice to actually choose which skills get passed on from a fusion instead of having to reselect the fusion over and over until it finally gives you what you want. Lucifer help you if you want more than one skill and your demon has the max amount of skills. And save right after getting a successful fusion if you want to do another, because if your luck is bad like mine the second will be a failure and you'll have to start all over.
I'm venting a little bit because I'm stuck on the game because I'm at a boss who is immune to physical attacks and I've just spent the entire game up to this point beefing up my physical attacks. Ugh, I could beat him, but it would take a few tries and it feels too much like work for me. I don't mind challenging fights, but I do mind when the game goes out of its way to take away any advantage I might have. I can't even take the normal 'level your way to victory' approach because of the linear way the dungeons are set up and the way the press turn system reduces the importance of leveling.
Great game up to this point though. I just wished this director's cut was a little more polished.

Um. What's Avatar Tuner?
Avatar Tuner is a side story to the SMT series and has a Final Fantasy feel, though the main character is a woman. The trailer is pure CG (at least the one I saw) so I don't know what the gameplay will be like. I assume it will be similar to SMT3 though.
Here's the sum total of Dante in SMT: *minor minor spoilers*
1. See his boots near the beginning of the game.
2. Jumps off a tall building in a single bound for one fight.
3. Acts like a complete jerk in a whole level of a bonus dungeon, which ends in a fight.
4. Offers to join near the end of the game (and if you say yes, you can't ever be rid of him).
SMT3 is a fun game, though strangely I'm about halfway through and I have no desire to play anymore. Maybe because I would have to work to prepare for the boss fight I'm at since my current demons aren't cutting it.
I heard that whether Dante is willing join you or not is based on your actions earlier in the game. Does what you said in your spoiler above agree or disagree with that info?
I couldn't find the Atlus booth anywhere.

There ya go, I was trying to find it by sifting through Atlus' newest press releases, to no avail.
I never got that far, but I can't see it having an effect one way or the other since it happens in the bonus dungeon which really isn't connected with the main story. And Dante right away gives the impression that he doesn't care what's going on at all. He was hired and then tricked by the prince of lies himself. The only thing I can think happening is certain actions in the game will cut you off from the bonus dungeon and so you'll never get to his section of it. Actually, the fight I complained about before turned out to be easy. Just needed 3 of one item and I had no trouble. The current trio of bosses I'm on are brutal though, since they heal/charm, buff themselves up, and group attack you every round. And since the attacker can use all elemental attacks, it's likely they'll score at least one extra press turn per round. The system really sides with the bosses, but I guess they wouldn't be bosses otherwise.
If you want an RPG with a story that's more than 'grim hero saves the world' than SMT3 has that covered in spades. It not only presents a kalidescope of various philosphies, but let's you chose which you wish to follow and doesn't impose judgment on which is right or wrong. Also, each one has it's own avatar which personalizes these philosphies instead of having them be abstract. And this is all presented with a careful pace that is occasionally overwhelming (like when you actually see the world change into the sphere) but there are valleys to let you take that in before moving on to the next big bit, which will probably be a little easier to swallow.
It can just be very frustrating in the gameplay department sometimes, but in regards to the story I have no complaints. In fact, for once I think the story wouldn't be more interesting in a movie or novel because being the main character in the game gives you the real feeling of being in the middle of it all, which a book can do to some degree, but probably not to this level. Might have been better without the RPG aspects and just been a pure adventure game, but I doubt it would sell nearly as well.
Though this careful construction is hampered by the appearance of Dante the Super Badass. Though now that I think about it, there is one philosphy that does fit his personality, but his gun wielding and stylish fashion sense still seem to clash with the game. He's a Maniac boss, but all the other bosses in this group have a very common theme, which he breaks, and that's something I personally dislike. Though I have nothing against Dante in his proper context.
I don't know if I'd say it has a FF feel to it. It appears to retain the whole dark, "anti-FF" atmosphere.Quote:

Its official its been delayed to the 12th of October, but don't worry its the last delay and in about a week and a half you shall finally get the chance to play the glory that is Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne We're so close after waiting since Nocturne came out in Japan so long ago (feels like yesterday) so keep the SMT N passion alive!

Only good Prima guide I can think of in recent memory is the SF Anniversary Collection guide.
I believe it was Mastiff who chose Prima. Doublejump was more than willing to do the guide for La Pucelle. It'll probably be that way until people actually stop buying Prima guides, no matter how bad they are.

My anticipation has reached amazing new highs for this game though, I cannot wait.
What does it have in the way of bonus dungeons and such?
There are two. One's pretty small and mainly a backdrop for a series of boss fights (with a very nice prize should you beat them all), while the other is pretty big, 6 levels if I'm remembering correctly, with boss fights, mini-games, it's own cut-scenes, and brokers selling special custom demons that kick ass, though are rather expensive. There's also a number of optional boss encounters, but you'll need to beat them in order to unlock all the levels of the second bonus dungeon.Quote:

What's better is that beating those optional bosses unlocks them so you can create them via demon fusion, which you'll probably want to do since they have powerful unique skills. Like there's an undead priest who can heal your entire party up to full and also can drain both mana and life from opponents, both skills that can be transferred to other demons. The mana draining becomes nearly useless by the time you hit the final dungeon, but I was using the healing ability right up to the final boss.Quote:

I've played it. It's not really the sequel, Atlus US renamed it. Originally called Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner (no SMT in it). And no, it's not better. There's more story, but it's less interesting, and the combat is more complex, but the additions don't really add that much, and you can't recruit demons, which is a major downer. Also most of the demons are just reused from Nocturne. It's also much shorter, even if you do all the extras.Quote:

Amm's had pretty crazy precognative abilities lately, actually, seems like any imports he reviews for Got-Next are announced for US release a week or so later.
Only played a few hours, but I'm loving it so far. The graphics, music, story and atmosphere all struck a chord with me. The game is just fucking beautiful to look at, despite its age, and the relative starkness of some of the environments. The walking-around camera control is a bit retarded, this being an RPG, it doesn't matter much. Packing the soundtrack in the game was a great idea. now I can support my local game shop and still get my free tchotchke, without having to deal with EB/Gamestop's shit.
I wish I could support my local store, but no way am I waiting until sometime next week (most likely next Friday) to get my hands on the game, and then have to go to EB anyways to get a guide.Quote:

Caution to all of you considering getting this, it's harder than your average JRPG..A lot harder..But, if you played either of the Personas (especially Eternal Punishment) then much of what this game has to offer you're somewhat familiar with. Just try to think of it as a quality 3D Persona with everything done..better..

Yeah, Hard is pretty brutal. You can't run from battle with a certain item/skill, enemies do more damage, you do less damage, and everything is more expensive. It's only really meant for a second run when you have a full list of customized demons waiting for you. On Normal, its mostly a matter of just understanding how to score press turns.
