In the defense of Street Fighter, they had a REALLY shitty publisher / distrubutor / parent company whatever it's called, and it barely got put out into stores and in such limited quality.

Luckily they switched to Devil's Due, who flood stores with Transformers and G.I Joe, so Street Fighter is going to be flooded into stores starting with issue 7.

The trade paperback just came out that has issues 0-6, too.

There's also Devil May Cry and Silent Hill comics, and I think Darkstalkers and Project Justice ones were / are planned?

Sonic...

One of my friends and his brother have several Rubbermaid containers just FULL of mint Sonic comics. It's absurd, how many of those things they have.

Yeah those are out with Street Fighter being the most successful. There is also a Maximo one shot out which is actually pretty good, Devil May Cry and some other I think. Check the Official Monthly Comic Book thread for the Street Fighter trade paperback info.

A TPB would be even more convenient for me. Thanks for the info!

Yeah Nomi, I forgot about those Sonic comics. Archie Comics published a bazillion of them and I think there were a few others done by other publishers. I'm not sure which, if any, are worth having though.

Yeah... They must have over two hundred of those. I honestly can't remember, all I can recall is piles upon piles, all in little plastic things. They weren't really even fans, they just kept getting them.

I read few a few of the specials, but they weren't all that spectacular. A few were alright, though.

BTW: How much does the SF trade cost? What about each issue? I've been out of the comic loop for a while. What do they run nowadays?

I'm quite surprised that Archie's Sonic comic book has lasted as long it did (and still going). I don't think there has been another American comic book based on a videogame (much less, a Japanese franchise like Sonic) that has lasted as long as Sonic.

I know IDW is publishing a Silent Hill mini-series. Konami seems to be heavily involved, juding by the fact that they're having their illustrators do variant covers.

Trade is $9.95 issues are $2.95 seperately.

Speaking of the Sonic comics, those were really good comics until they started taking it WAY too seriously. Now its just way too much...
I have issues 0-32 and 99-100 (the Metal Sonic story arc, which, despite taking place after they got weird with the series, still kicks ass).

As for old school comics:

There's been tons of Street Fighter comics long before Udon's adaption of the series. The first American comic was Malibu's Street Fighter ongoing series, which was so terrible that even Capcom hated it and ordered the cancellation of the series after three issues.

Later Tokuma Shoten published an English version of Masaomi Kanzaki's Street Fighter II Ryu series (since this was before manga became hip and cool, the series was colorized for all eight of it's issues). This manga is notable for bearing the first public appearance of Gouken in any form of Street Fighter-related media (although he's killed by Bison in the book, since Akuma hasn't been introduced yet by the developers).

DC comics published a mini-series based on the live-action Street Fighter, while Viz published another adaption, but for the Animated version.

Viz published Masahiko Nakahira's Cammy Gaiden mini-series as part of their Game On! USA magazine. Masahiko Nakahira's subsequent Street Fighter manga series carried big influences over subsequent Street Fighter (Evil Ryu and Sakura's rival, Karin, were his creations), but none of them has been translated so far.

The now-defunct Valiant Comics published several Nintendo-based comics such as the Nintendo Comic System, Super Mario Bros., Captain N and a Game Boy one-shot.

Nintendo Power later published colored manga based on their games, such as Super Mario Adventures (by Charlie Nozawa, which evolved to Mario vs. Wario), Zelda: A Link to the Past (by the late great Shotaro Ishimori), Star Fox and Metroid (both by Benimaru Itoh). The first two (minus the second Mario vs. Wario one-shot) were published as TPBs.

Archie Comics, prior to doing Sonic, did a short-lived Bayou Billy comic series to hype the game. Like Sonic, Bayou Billy took a few liberties by giving a Billy his own group of ethnically-correct sidekicks and turning the game damsel in distress into his lawyer as well. Konami hasn't branched off any of their properties into comic books up until now.

Marvel Comics did a Double Dragon limited series, but it might as well had been just another generic superhero-book. The comic bore no resemblance to the game and turned Billy and Jimmy into psudeo-superheroes (having their powers originating from a dragon statue). instead of the badass martial artists they were. It was meant to be a forerunner for an ongoing series, but thankfully it never happened (too bad it served as a basis for that horrible cartoon and movie). The instruction manga in the Famicom version of Double Dragon III was way better. Marvel also published a Virtua Fighter one-shot (the cover art was used on Virtua Fighter Remix).

Wildstorm published a Resident Evil "Comic Magazine" for five or six issues and then later a Hong Kong adaption of Code: Veronica in English (there's quite a few of Biohazard comics in Hong Kong).

Malibu published several Mortal Kombat comics during the popularity of the first two games, written by John Tobias I believe. They were a bit more successful than Malibu's Street Fighter adaption.

A few Tekken comics were made. Can't remember the publisher though.

Tomb Raider has a comic series. Some consider Tomb Raider a game.

I highly recommend the "Best of" Valiant's Nintendo comics in hardcover.

Yeah. She had several crossovers with Witchblade. Kinda fitting considering both series are nothing but T&A.

I don't like the street fighter comics.

On the other hand, The Resident Evil:Code Veronica comics are about the best thing ever and you all should track them down immediately.

Devil May Cry was just released in comic book form. I forget which company did it, but the art was fantastic.

Devil May Cry was released from Dreamwave. They're also releasing mini series based on Darkstalkers, Maximo, and Project Justice sometime this year as was mentioned previously. Top Cow has released a few comics based on comics over the years, including the recent Legacy of Kain Defiance, Soul Reaver, and I think they're might have been one based on Vagrant Story (I could be mistaken, I just rememer seeing a Michael Turner piece of art based on Vagrant Story.) The Tekken comic was released through Image.

Dreamwave. I get all my comic book news through Hypa Space, a TV show on the Space Channel up here in Canada. It's a good show, covering everything. But they showed the artwork and it was great. I'm not a huge DMC fan (not huge enough to buy a book on it), but the art blew me away.

Now that I think about, I remeber Marvel did a one-shot comic prequal to Resident Evil when it first came out. Also Wildstorn did a series of Resident Evil comics that weren't too shabby.

I believe Marvel's one-shot story was later reprinted in the very first issue of Wildstorm's Resident Evil magazine, but I could be wrong.

uh, I have a huge collection of sonic comics. I think I have like 0-3 and 1 through 50 something. I collected them in middle school. I stopped once I realized I'd need money to buy a car.

I picked up the first issue of the Mega Man comic when it came out. It was pretty crappy. Definitely not worth the few bucks it cost.

I'd love to read the SH comic, though.

I heard that the performance of the SF comic series will be a factor concerning Capcom's decision whether or not to make a new SF game.

If you care about SF at all, you should be buying the comics, and the SFIII/HSFII PS2 double-pack...

It was probably released in ridiculously small quantities exclusively to comic stores, whom have proven time and again that they have their fingers far from the pulse of what people will actually want to buy.

Now, now, I don't think they set their expectations that high.

This is probably the hottest non-DC/Marvel book out now. I'd say it's been quite successful.

Maximo has a comic. The first issue is the only one available right now, and the series probably won't be around for long . . . because it sucks.

I've seen some artwork from the Darkstalkers and Project Justice comics, it's fucking sweet. The Darkstalkers 4-issue miniseries is due out this summer, not sure when Project Justice is due out, though.

I'll be on the lookout for that Darkstalker series. If it's as good as the SF one, it'll be very sweet indeed. :D

So how's the quality on most of the Dreamwave Capcom stuff? Other than Maximo, which CV has already said sucked, how are they, DMC in particular?

I recently bought the Devil May Cry comic and it's pretty decent. They seem to be adding more backstory to Devil may Cry(which isn't hard) but the first issue basically has what's in the game with just added story. I'll be buying the next issues since I'm a big fan of the game and of the character. The art on the book is kind of odd to me. It looks nice painted but the colors are really murky and the art tends to be inconsistent.

I guess Pat Lee is just trying his hand in trying to improve drawing humans better since he usually draws awesome Transformers.

Maximo's one shot I thought was better than the first DMC issue so I highly disagree with Captain Vegetable there. It has some really nice art and coloring and gives Maximo some character. I actually wish they adapted the comic stuff to a game since it would make a really good sidestory.

Street Fighter is solid. Almost all the SF characters are in but so far it's exploring the Guile/Charlie/Bison story and Ryu/Ken/Akuma's backstory. There some really nice art in there and most of the characters do their special moves in an awesome manner. I'd definitely recommend the Street Fighter stuff.

Something to keep in mind when it comes to Dreamwave Comics is that art > story. It's more than likely that a $4-5 comic will take about 2 minutes to read. I remember the first Transformers series usually took me about that long to go through. That being said, the artwork is really nice.

The Street Fighter series, by Udon and now published by Devil's Due, is really, really sweet. You can tell these guys are SF fans going into this, and that's why it's much better than Dreamwave's stuff.

I really, really hope that Darkstalkers is handled well. I'm looking forward to that series the most.

To be fair, I loved the art, the personallity, and the dialogue. The overall plot sucked, though. Scab?! WTF is that all about? I thought it would have been much, MUCH better if, instead of trying to develop their own independant bad guy, they just kept Achille and had him manipulate things behind the scenes. If Scab had had a cooler name, and had he been some kind of supreme general in Achille's army of the undead, I would have felt much better about it.

Fair enough. I didn't mind the name Scab but I found it kind of refreshing them using a new villain, I thought he was a good enemy.

Love that they put in Death too.

Death was the best part of the whole book. :)

Now that you've got me talking about it, I feel like it's a shame that it was only a one shot. There's so much with Maximo that could have been explored. Even if I didn't like the villian, I'm sure it could have grown into an excellent monthly book.

Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog series is well worth checking out, particularly if you're a fan of the early '90s cartoon series it's based on. I imagine it wouldn't appeal to everyone, but it's well written, adds a lot to the Sonic mythos, and manages to successfully tap into the essence of everything that once made Saturday morning cartoons great.
