Kanto Wanderer is a good Yakuza film. The director, Suzuki, has a very original style that you'll either love or not understand at all. The film is worth a watch, but keep in mind it's a lot more tame than the Battles Without Honor of Humanity yakuza films.

Anybody else manage to see Sympathy for Lady Vengeance yet? My boo got me a copy for my birthday recently (the two disc special edition with the director's version on the second disc where the film slowly fades into black and white), but I haven't really had a chance to sit down and take in the movie from beginning to end in one sitting.
Yeah, I guess I could have watched Sympathy for Lady Vengeance instead of A Bittersweet Life, but I had the urge to see something a little more mindless.
A Bittersweet Life gets my vote too. I saw it a while back at The Prince Charles Cinema in London (preview). Don't want to spoil, but I loved the bit where the guy literally has to 'fight for his life'!

I started Operetta Tanuki Goten last night. Holy shit this is possibly the weirdist movie I'ver ever seen.
It's directed by Seijun Suzuki, more known for his Yakuza films and stuff. It stars Zhang Ziyi as a racoon in human form. It goes back and forth between Chinese and Japanese (because the guy who falls in love with her is amazed that he can understand her because, well, she's a racoon and speaks a didfferent language). And it's a musical featuring Opera, noh, hip hop... And in many cases the "sets" are stage sets or even animated.

Any comments on a movie called "The Warrior"? I'm not even sure it was asian, I just kind of gave it a once-over in the martial arts section of Best Buy.
Also, I've been looking for a thread like this for sometime, thanks to all who contributed.
It's just the US release of Zusa Warrior (or something along those lines). It's been out for years, and has better DVDs available all over the world (instead of the barebones we get here).Quote:

Ok, so many of you love this film and the DVD releases have sucked major ass so far. Well, a new remastered version just came out. I haven't tested it myself, but will next month. This might be the definitive version:
