Bent-n-Dent

When I go home to see my folks, if I can help it, I try to shop at the local Bent n Dent. For those not in the know, those are the places Grocery store chains send food that has been dropped on the floor or other wise mishandled.

The box isn’t as pretty but usually you can get a really good deal on name brand products. Today I got about 50 or 60 bucks worth of food for 14.58. Yes, some of it may not be fresh and need to be thrown away, but with those saves I can stand to lose a buck or two.

One else get food at these types of places to save money? Or are you all to good for this sort of thing?

I don't know of any stores like that, but there is a bin at my grocery store that serves the same purpose. I never touch it because everything's seemingly covered in grape soda and it's not safe to eat damaged canned goods, especially if there's meat in there. Although sometimes they have bags of ripe bananas in the produce section for cheap, they're great for banana bread.

There's no place like that around here, but if there was I'd be all over it.

I frequently cut corners on my food shopping to spend money on more important things like videogames, my car, and transformers.

I've been doing it for years, and I'm still alive.

why would it be unsafe? we dont use lead in cans anymore, so there is no fear of poisoning.

same here. It just makes good sense to get name brand food cheaper. Who gives a shit about the box, you don't eat it.

Ah it can be hit and miss. There may be a great deal on Cheeze Nips, but they may be old and stail. Then on the other hand you may get a box of your fav cereal for 50 cents and it be all lovely.

There's a little thing called botchulism, wich is the reason for all those warnings on canned goods. Dented cans may have a small leak wich lets air in, and that ain't good. A damaged box of cereal ain't gonna hurt you though, unless some escaped mental patient tampered with the box and you get some of his meds in your fruit loops.

There are three kinds of botulism that you can get, the one you all are talking about it foodbourne botumlism....makes sense. As Johnny mentioned, it can come from small leaks in canned foods, its more commonly in home-canned foods that aren't properly sealed. Botulism is caused by a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum, which is commonly found in soil. They can lay dormant until either killed by extreme tempretures or gradually with an anti-toxin, or until they are exposed to conditions that support their growth, such as low oxygen enviroments....i.e., your stomach.
There are an average of 110 cases each year in the U.S., so it is hard for doctors to actually spot. Botulism is often confused with Guillain-Barre syndrome, stroke and myasthenia gravis. Symptoms of botulism are very serious if not deadly.
Botulism begins by killing the nerve-endings in your body, thus making you unable to move, even for simple functions. You literally cannot move a muscle. You cannot see, because you cannot open your eyelids. You cannot talk, because you cannot move your mouth. If you are uncomfortable, you cannot move to make yourself comfortable. You cannot even breath because the toxin has killed the nerve-endings that give the signals to your lungs to take a breath...you are on life support if the doctors don't catch it before you die. You are in a temporary paralysis, that end in either the anti-toxin killing the bacteria in your body and you very slowly regaining your strength, and I do mean slowly; or in death, which by then it won't matter.
Usually the symptoms include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred or mumbled speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth and muscle weakness. Symptoms normally begin to show 18 - 36 hours after eating a contaminated food, but also as early as six hours, to as late as 10 days.
If food is contaminated then you can still eat it if boiled for at least 10 min. Canned fruit, however, I wouldn't recommend eating if the can has been damaged, unless you have a death wish....a slow and agonizing death.

the can can be dented, and still be fine, if the dent is so severe there are creases in the metal, then I would pass, but a cosmetic dent, 50-75% off? I'm there.

You can also look at the lids of the can, if they arent puffed out, the vacuum seal is still ok, and it should be fine..

Up here in New England we have Ocean State Job-lot, which isnt exactly the same, but you can get great deals on canned/boxed stuff that was test marketed and didnt catch on all the time. Sometimes you can get normal stuff, but in older packaging or package sizes that were discotinued..

Just aldis for me!

For the price of cheese and butter, I got damn near a week's groceries at Aldi on Saturday...

I'm not going to eat all of that butter in a week. I spend maybe $75/week in groceries, at most. This is interesting, though, I always wondered what other people spent in groceries. I eat meat or fish for dinner any night that I'm at home, which is what, at least $5-$8/night, right?

Seriously though. We have been through this before with some other dude. Red text makes teh bebe Jesus cry.

And its just easier to post in regular color. It saves time. Hell, I dont even use apostrophes or any sort of spelling check. Teh grammar police hate me.

yeah, but that was ages ago. Thankfully he hasnt used it since, because in everything but 2.1 gamma, it f**ks with your eyes.

Aldi is a German chain of stores that has wondrously invaded the U.S., saving consumers tons of money spent at Safeways and Giants. www.aldifoods.com is their site, and lists their weekly specials. They usually have great computer-related bargains, and I got my 5.8 megapixel digi-cam with tons of extra shit for a mere $160. They are TEH R0X0R.

They dont have those down here in Texas, or at least Houston as far as I know... there might be, its a big city. Now that you mentioned digital camera you got me thinking.... I'd really like a digital camcorder.... man.... I need to find a deal on one of those.

I wouldn't be surprised if they started carrying them at some point, if they do, I'll keep you informed. High-end computer stuff comes in VERY limited quanities, IE, they only had five of the digi-cams.
