You know what helped a little too? I plugged in one of those little electric water-fountains. The trickling sound was soothing and helped get me off the "get to sleep dammit!" mental cycle. My dad has also used a sleep machine, a device which plays looping prerecorded sounds like white noise, the ocean, even the buzzing a fetus hears. My mom ended up sleeping in another room though - it irritated her.
