NEW YORK — On the eve of the 40th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, the company paid homage to the pony car’s racing heritage with the debut of the Mustang GT-R concept at the New York International Auto Show.
The GT-R’s design cues and color — a screaming Valencia Orange with a striking black hood — were inspired by the famous Grabber Orange 1970 Mustang Boss 302 Trans Am racecars piloted by legendary racers such as Parnelli Jones.
The debut of the GT-R comes a week ahead of what promises to be a memorable Mustang anniversary party from April 15 to 18 at the Nashville Speedway. The Tennessee event, which is open to the public, is expected to draw 100,000 Mustang owners and 3,000 classic cars. Also in attendance will be Carroll Shelby, whose association with Ford and Mustang goes back to the mid-1960s, and Edsel Ford II. The GT-R concept is not expected to make an appearance.
The GT-R’s chief designer Doug Gaffka said that while the concept is not slated for production, it does offer consumers some hints at future Mustang variations and production color choices.
At the very least, it gives Mustang aficionados ideas on how to customize the redesigned 2005 Mustang, which hits showrooms in late summer. Buyers, for example, can order the GT-R’s 440-horsepower engine — the new 5.0-liter “Cammer” — for $14,995 from Ford Racing Performance Parts, along with other production racing parts.
The concept also features a Ford Racing-supplied Tremec T-56 six-speed transmission linked to the engine through a heavy-duty clutch and flywheel assembly.
The Mustang GT-R features the classic pony in the grille, surrounded by contemporary materials like carbon fiber, as well as aerodynamic treatments like ground-hugging front and side splitters. The concept has specially made 20-inch Pirelli racing slicks, substantial air scoops and a prominent rear spoiler that is the most striking design element. The concept’s wheel tread is an inch wider than the production car’s.
The stripped-down interior looks ready for racing. Designers chose a Formula One-style steering wheel with integrated gauges, including the tachometer and speedometer. Only the oil pressure and water temperature gauges are located on the instrument panel.
The GT-R was built at Saleen Special Vehicles in Troy, Mich.
“The GT-R is the ultimate expression of the Mustang platform,” said Hau Thai-Tang, the 2005 Mustang’s chief engineer.
Love the color and the way they tricked it out. You guys have any favorites to show off?
