As far as I can tell, that destroys both half life 2 and doom III

Hopefully not by the same people who made Unreal 2.

It does look incredible and something my computer has no hope of running, but a good enough game would be the kick needed to upgrade. Something like an Elder Scrolls / Morrowind type game would be enough.

I didn't think I'd see a tech that passed, let along met what DOOM III is doing so fast. I thought I'd be six months after Doom III came out that we'd see rival games look as good (that aren't licensing the DIII engine). I can't believe how good that looked.

Haven't Epic signed on with Microsoft's XNA initiative? If so, is this the graphical quality we should be expecting in early Xbox 2 titles? If so, I'm sold.

Well Doom III got revealed over two years ago, and looked amazing and still does today. We get to see an Unreal 3 engine tech demo... I'll guess it'll be at least a year till we see a game that uses it on store shelves. I remember how long it took for the Unreal Warfare engine to get used in a game (I think it became UT2K3).

Regardless of all that, yes it looks insanely good.

U2 sucked because Legend was barely holding on while finishing it up. They closed up shop right after U2 XMP was released to the net.

Epic said in that video that Unreal 3 will be based on it, as will some secret unnamed project of their's that will surface in 12-18 months.

Did they really say Unreal 3 would be based on it? I thought they were just calling it the 3rd iteration of the Unreal engine, that's all.

But yes, all those character models are for that unannounced game.

I'm interested to see if ATi shows something this cool when they unveil their new cards formally in four days.

Duke Nukem has broken off of the Unreal tech, so no delay because of that ;o

OMFG EPIC! I guess this is what they were doing when they were making half-assed UT2003-04.

Tim Sweeney has pretty much optimized this for 64 bit CPUs and for later generations of video cards. Apparently this will be used in 2005-06.

Indeed they did. Also, all their games after UT2004 will be published by Microsoft. I assume they now have access to more crazy shit.

Sounds right to me. I thought you meant they had dropped it completely and were doing it more like Half-Life 2 (completely their own engine). But yea... I'd guess it's exactly how you said it is in that case.

The video looks awesome, the close ups and the character moving with the stained class is sweetbombs.

The DNF engine has been done for a while. They finally settled it probably late last year. All the work now is being done on content.

Ummm.... holy shit. That's awesome. :) Now somebody use that to make a game that isn't all dark and gothic looking.....and isn't a FPS....and isn't on the PC.

If the next gen of consoles look anything like that, then I take back everything I said about there not being a significant graphical jump for this console gen upgrade.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I mean, Christ, that looks like a huge jump from Doom 3.

Just thinking about what a game using this would be like is making me giddy. It's just too good looking.

Didn't watch the video but checked out the screens in this thread. Very very nice. Since this is a tech demo I expect the final graphics to come down a bit like with Doom 3. It'll also prob be a considerable amount of time before any games using the engine come out. Potential character models rendered alone are one thing though. I wanna see some enviroment shots. Those should be great.

The video shows enviornments. It may sound weird, but the 3D LOOKS 3D. The part with the character in the hallway with the light coming through a stained glass window (with all the colors) is amazing. He walks backand forth, the colored light hitting him and the environment with his shadow moving against the background too. It's amazing. I wish they saved this for e3. Would have been a cool surprise.

They probably wanted to save this for E3, though thanks to some handcam fun, less people will be surprised.
