EA and Digital Illusions Announce Development of Battlefield: Modern Combat for the PlayStation 2

Award-winning Battlefield Franchise Comes to Console for the First Time

Lock and load, soldier... It's time to prepare for all-out war on the modern battlefields of the world. Electronic Arts (Nasdaq:ERTS) announced today that the award-winning Battlefield franchise is coming to console for the first time with Battlefield: Modern Combat(TM) for the PlayStation(R) 2 computer entertainment system from Sony Computer Entertainment America. The title, which is currently under development for a planned fall 2004 debut, will be published and distributed by EA under the EA GAMES(TM) brand.

The first-ever Battlefield console installment will drop players into the heat of battle on the high tech frontlines, entering a new modern era of combat with more firepower and new expansive environments. Armed with the latest modern weaponry, players can take control of over 30 vehicles, including tanks, helicopters and fast attack vehicles, to engage in major conflicts with up to 24 players in some of the largest online battles on the PlayStation 2 console. (Online play requires the PlayStation 2 console, a broadband connection, memory card, and network adaptor for the PlayStation 2). Voiceover communication is also supported via USB headset. Players will choose to fight for one of three military superpowers: the United States, the Chinese, or the newly formed Middle East Coalition.

Developed by Sweden-based Digital Illusions, Battlefield: Modern Combat features large and detailed environments, from city streets to remote forests, in some of the globe's most notorious hot spots, allowing players to engage in multiplayer battles that could be ripped straight from tomorrow's headlines. Battlefield: Modern Combat also includes over 70 state-of-the-art modern weapons and advanced weapon systems, including heat-seeking missiles and laser designated bombs. Additionally, with in-game success, players increase their rank and garner promotions in a persistent online world.

This will be amazing if it is playable on the PS2, with its lack of RAM. Pretty cool stuff though.

This will be terrible. Imagine using the PS2 controller to do all that you do in BF. Well, I shouldnt say that, sicne it's being deved with the console in mind it might show promise. Now if those assholes at Dice Canada would patch Viet-fucking-nam.

Will this requir ethe hard drive? I can just imagine the load times...:yuck:

This news would be fantastic if there already wasn't two great Battlefield games available on a superior platform, with 32 on 32 multiplayer, with a ton of mods, and where you don't have to use a controller.

MOH:RS just isn't cutting it for him anymore and he refuses to play any games on the PC with a mouse and keyboard, despite me showing him the good PC FPS games.

The fact that EA is releasing the new Battlefield on PS2 makes me hate them. I'm guessing it won't be as good as the PC titles though, hopefully we'll get a piece of this action with another exclusive in 2005.

ya. i just read on gamespot that they are making battlefeild 2 for the pc to come out in 05. itll have the same armies that the ps2 will have so it will be a current war game.
