Just got back and honestly even with the changes I thought it was great. The gore and brutality in the fights was really cool. I'm sure purists will dislike it but, it's a movie and it being different isnt bad as the changes work just fine in the context of the movie. It doesnt make the comic any less awesome. As for more bits with normal folks to make the end of the world seem more important, Snyder has said there will be much more of that kinda stuff in his DVD director's cut.

Losing the Black Freighter was a good move, losing the cast of normal people hurt the story. I had no problem with the squid-replacement, but there were quite a few missing bits from the book at the end that not only explained why Ozymandias's plan worked as well as it did but also rounded out his character. The sex scene was shoehorned in, and while I hate to lose tits on the screen it needed to be shorter and with less soundtrack. Other than that I pretty well enjoyed it.
I also enjoyed the credit at the beginning- Based on a comic co-created by Dave Gibbons.

I approved of it and I approved of the sex scene, sountrack and all. Snyder's good with those.
EDIT: OK, I see the complaints about the random people missing and the squid, but it didn't kill it. And what's with all the slow motion hate? I felt this movie was quite different in style to 300, action and all.

For one thing, I think making little noise about the Manhattan destruction is a reflection of how we have coped with 911. Granted 911 was on a much smaller scale, but this is a way to say we'll survive the worst and come back stronger.

wow.
Sure the ending was changed a bit, but wow man. What they got right ... they fucking nailed it. There were scenes in the movie that were lifted from the printed page.
Rorschach eating beans.
Rorschach standing in the doorway.
Ozymandias speech in front of the TV screens.
The ending wasn't great, IF YOU KNOW THE REAL ONE! Yet it worked for the framework of the film.
edit and what I mean is ... the actual visual scene. Can be directly correlated to the page in the comic.

I liked it, none of the changes in story bothered me at all. You can't have all those minor characters in a reasonably length movie--that's not how you tell a story in a movie (which need to be lean).
The sex scene was welcome because it had some hooter (Hooter!) in it, but it did go on to the point where it was a bit awkward. I mean, did we really need to watch them come fire?
Acting wise, well done for the most part. I thought Jeffery Dean Morgan was really good, as well as Jackie Earl Haley. His gravely voice should show Christian Bale how to do a gravelly voice--it was silly, but it never sounded as forced as Batman's. The girl who played Silk Spectre was pretty wooden that sometimes dipped into pretty bad. Nixon did not really look like Nixon. Kissinger was good. But not really Nixon.
Generally I enjoyed it a lot, I haven't read the comic in years so I had forgotten how a few plot details. The changed ending was for the better--faking a Dr. Manhattan attack was much easier to construct within the confines of the movie. Throwing a dead space squid into the mix would have probably comes across pretty stupid.
I saw it in a theater with an odd mixed crowd. It was half nerds and half really super cool trendy people quizzing each other on Watchmen trivia that ostracized a friend of mine for not having read the book. As I was leaving I heard lots of people reassuring others "No way man, the book is like, totally better on every level." Which is probably true, but fuck it, I think it was a really solid adaptation.
Overall, well shot, acting from great to bad, really great fight scenes, very gory. :tu:
Did the Comedian shoot Kennedy in the book? If the Comedian shot Kennedy in the Watchmen universe, who shot Kennedy in the exact same way/place/time in our own world?
*Edit - Also, good music aside from the unfortunate MCR cover of Desolation Row.
