Questions about Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior series...

Hi. I have never played a Dragon Quest game and I would like to ask the following...

1)How many Dragon Warrior games are currently released in the US and for which consoles?

2)Which ones are the best and are worth playing?

3)Didn't DW 1 and 2 come out for GBA? How were those?

4)I would like to play the reprise version of DQ3 but DeJap has yet to translate it. Has it been released for the GBA? If so, how does it compare to the Super Famicom version?

5)I am also thinking of playing the translated rom of DQ6 which is supposed to be 99% done. Have any of you played all the way through it? Any problems/glitches?

6)Lastly, how well does the DQ/DW series compare to the FF series in terms of story/battle features and overall fun?

The NES got 1-4.
The SNES didn't get any domestically.
The GBC got upgraded versions of 1-3. 1 and 2 were on one cartridge and 3 was on another.
The PS1 got DW7.

I'll leave the recommendations to fans of the series.

Too much leveling up IMO. My friend got a free copy with
Nintendo Power back in the day of the first one, graphics
weren't even good back in the day and the story was poor.
Haven't played the other ones. Saw part 4 for sale for $120
the other day it's super rare or something.

They are all pretty much the same (with the exception of DW1 as the 1 person party really slows the game down IMHO. Hasn't dated real well)... where in if you like one of the games and like the feel in general of DW, you'll feel right at home with all of them. That being said, DW4 I remember being truly terrific and easily standing among one of the best RPGs of all time. DW7 is also really good if you can look past the graphics, as it has a whole, whole lot of gameplay.

They came out on the GB on one cart... they are very good ports, and as a package deal, is worth looking into. The release of DW3 for GBC is excellent as well, and has enhancements that the NES one didn't have (such as moods for characters, a medal system that you can collect, a secret dungeon after the game ends, etc)... I actually just played through it again last month on the GB and was still again, very enjoyable. I'm not sure how it compares to the SNES JP reprise version, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are very similar.

The key word here is very 'traditional' compared to FF. There are no flashy battle systems, or graphics (in fact DW8 will be the first game where you can see your party members attacking in battle). Sometimes you'll need to level on the side to keep up with the game, and the encounter rate is "decent", heh. Later on (starting with DW3) they've started adding lots of jobs to choose from, to keep characters as interesting as possible. The storylines are always excellent (esp DW4) but again are very "traditional". There are good plot twists and whatnot but no love scenes in space, summons from the Gods, or swords with guns on the end of them. A lot of times (esp DW7) you see the syndrome where every town you encounter will basically have it's own story and plot and problem to solve. Bottom line, they are different tastes and are both great series in their own ways.

This is how I got my copy, and thus fell in love with the series.
I think that 3 was the best, as I only like 1-4, and the GBC version of that is the way to go.

DQ6 is worth playing through -

I thought the entire cast of characters were pretty interesting, at least more so than 7. Everything else is typical DQ goodness in terms of game length, music, and so on.

I'd have to check but I think I put in 150 hours into DQ6. Not sure at the moment.

Yeah, that describes basically every DQ/DW game. 5, 6, and 7 added some elements of what could resemble as a "plot" or "story line", but the series is largely based on individual quests/scenarios, not progressing cinematic stories. To me, that makes them seem more like games, rather than interactive movies (which I also enjoy on occasion).

Since I have nothing better to do, I might as well give some comments on the games and what I think you, as DQ initiate, should play:

Dragon Warrior (NES, 1989) - For millions of gamers out there, this was their very first console RPG (no, Zelda is NOT a RPG). Very simple, you are the hero, and it's you against everything else. The game has not aged well, and is very very tedious and sometimes frustrating. I'd skip this version in favor of the remake, but at the very least try it out for at least a couple hours just to get the overall feel of the series. When you've had enough, move on to...

Dragon Warrior II (NES, 1990) - Much, much better than the first in all aspects. This time you get 2 allies to help out as you progress. The world is also huge, roughly 4 times the size of the first. It still has its problems, but I considered this one a much more enjoyable experience than DW1. Again, try the original for a little while, but the remake is what you want to play instead.

Dragon Warrior III (NES, 1991) - Very cool game. This one uses the job concept - you pick your own choice of allies to aid in your quest. Again, virtually everything has improved since last time (except for graphics and music, about the same in both). It also completes the "Edrick" trilogy with a nice surprise towards the end. However, I'd reccomend skipping the NES version and playing the GBC remake, which has so much more to it it's not even funny.

Dragon Warrior IV (NES, 1992) - I'm amazed this actually was released in the US. Good thing, too, for it's the best RPG on the system (in English, anyway). The chapter concept works wonderfully (although it sucks to start over at level 1 four times) and adds sense of community among the characters. This is the first DW game I can think of that actually has some character development, even if it's still miniscule by today's standards. You need to play this one.

Dragon Quest V (SFC, 1993?) - Not released in the US the first time, and I'm willing to bet the new remake for PS2 won't make it over here, either. However, the SFC version has been completely translated in English. Get the Dejap patch to keep the item/spell names consistent with the American games. This one features a monster-recruiting aspect, a generational timeline, and IMO some of the most beautiful music in the series. The only thing that sets it apart from the basic feel of DW4 is the monster allies. I liked it, but feel free to skip it, as you're not really missing much.

Dragon Quest VI (SFC, 1996?) - Here we go, the best in the series. Not released in the US, but the NoProgress patch is 90% complete, playable from beginning to end. Only some non-essential text strings have been left untranslated. There are a million good things about this game, one of which is the DW-style job system (which is easily on par with FF's), but I'll let you find out for yourself. This is a must-play.

Dragon Warrior VII (PS1, 2001) - This one would blow DQ6 away if it weren't for the awful, terrible, disgusting, grainy, choppy, nasty 32-bit 3D engine. Being able to rotate the environments is pretty neat, as it gives them much added depth, but last-gen 3D is so gross that I would much prefer it in sharp, colorful 2D that the PS1 is capable of. I loved the gameplay and scenarios of this one, enough to look past the graphics, but if I were you, I'd hold out for a remake. In the meantime you should play...

Dragon Quest VIII (PS2, 2005?) - They're still working on it. Maybe you've seen the trailers floating around teh intarweb. It looks incredible so far.

Dragon Quest I-II Reprise (SFC, 1992?; GBC 2000) - The first of the infamous DQ remakes. This one has the first two games on one cartridge (or rom, heh). It has also been fully translated to English, but I couldn't finish DQ2 because of some graphical glitches in one of the caves. Anyway, DQ1 has the most improvements - higher EXP and Gold rewards, some more items, and even a few completely revamped dungeons. Overall, it's a much quicker and easier game than the original. DQ2's improvements aren't so impressive; the Prince of Cannock can equip some things he couldn't in the original, there are a few extra items, and there's an extra scenario later in the game, but other than that it's the same as far as I could tell. The graphics in both are an improvement, but it uses the DQ5 engine, which isn't exactly advanced. The new soundtracks are amazing though, especially the new Alefgard theme. Get the GBC version if you don't mind a cut in graphics/sound to have a legitimate release.

Dragon Quest III Remix (SFC, 1996; GBC 2001) - The SFC version has yet to be translated, and it'll be likely years before it happens. Play the GBC version instead, which was released in the US and is a surprisingly competent port. The remake features a host of new stuff, like fully-animated monsters, the personality stat, TinyMedal collecting, Monster Medals, new weapons/armor/items, a brand new character class (Thief), two bonus dungeons, and the probably the best minigame I've ever played - Pachisi. Yeah, it fucking pwns the original.

Dragon Quest VR (PS2 2004) - Just released a month ago I think. It's already sold 1.5 million copies. Insanity. As stated above, no US release is planned at this time. Definitely pick it up if it makes it over here. The game looks really cool. In this version, you can recruit ANY monster into your party, as opposed to just certain ones in the original.

Dragon Quest IV Remix (PS1 2002?) - Import-only. There was a bit of controversy surrounding the US release of this game - it was going along, right on schedule, when Heartbeat (a team of programmers who worked on the original) severed ties with Enix. In quite the hostile fashion, as I understand. The American team needed them to complete the localization so the project had to be cancelled. I'm not that disappointed, since the game uses the DW7 engine. No thanks, my eyes bled enough during the 160 hours I spent in DW7.

So, you need to play the following (OMG LET'S RECAP!111)
- Dragon Warrior NES version (to get the basic idea)
- Dragon Warrior I-IIR
- Dragon Warrior III GBC
- Dragon Warrior IV
- Dragon Quest VI
- Dragon Quest VIII (when it comes out in the US, should be 2005 :\)

If you find out you like the series, check out the Dragon Warrior Monsters games. They're enjoyable Pokemon clones featuring craploads of DW/DQ fanservice.

All I can add is that if the DQ5 remake improves on the molasses-like character walking speed that the SFC game has, it might make the game worth playing.

I made the 'mistake' of finishing DQ6 before starting 5. After approximately 10 minutes I just couldn't get over the lack of speed and put the cart back on the shelf.

IMO the DW series is just plain not fun.

I've tried many times to enjoy the series, but the snails pacing, over reliance on combat, and unexciting stories just do nothing for me.

I can't think of anything that Square-Enix could do that would make playing a DW game any less fun...

But that's the only DW I've played. I just bought 3 (GBC) on a whim, looks pretty good so far.

What you've said kinda parallels what another poster said in the ZSNES DeJap forums. After reading both of your posts, I think I'll give the series a try. But where to start?

You see, the thing is, I'm not really into portables and absolutely loathe the thought of playing an rpg on my 65" RPTV with...*gasp*...Gameboy Color graphics. I looked up some screenshots of the GBC remixes and while they look good on a 2" GBC screen, I'm not sure if I could swallow the overly simplistic 2D sprites and color pallette delivered from the little handheld that could. I would much rather look at graphics delivered from the Super Famicom and I'm not sure I want to deal with graphics more old school than that system....unless the GBC remixes are THAT spanking good!

So it looks like I may be leaning towards starting with the following...

DQ V(translated SFC rom)
DQ VI(translated SFC rom)
DQ VII(PSX)
DQ VIII(PS2)

...then by the time I'm done with those, hopefully DQ III Reprise for SFC will be at least 90% translated. I really REALLY wish Enix would have brought III Reprise out for either Super Nintendo or PSX. I remember looking at screenshots for it in an old issue of GameFan and just drooling at how beautiful the 2D pallette was.

Here's the thing....a few years ago, after being heavily influenced by Nick Rox, I used to drool at screenshots of all the beautiful RPGs out for the SFC. I have always wanted to play the ones that looked the prettiest so I started with Chrono Trigger(which remains my favorite videogame of all time to this day), then played FFVI, then Breath of Fire II, Secret of Evermore, Lufia II, Tales of Phantasia, etc.... I enjoyed all of these immensly and was so impressed at what the Super Nintendo could do.

Now, ten years later, I am starting to reminise on how I used to just gaze at the screenshots of those RPGs, and thanks to emulation and DeJap, I'm ready take on some of these games. Some of the other games I'd also like to play for the first time are...

I am currently playing the translated patch of Star Ocean and I'm having a blast with it! Perhaps you can tell me which of those games mentioned above are worth playing. Also Star Ocean 2nd Story is said to be pretty good too eh?

Anyway more thoughts are welcomed...

The DWIII remix is, simply because it's the only English version out there. I wouldn't hold your breath on the SFC rom translation, either. I also wouldn't recommend playing any retro games on the state-of-the-art TVs out there, as I hear they look like poo.

Looks like you're just gonna have to emulate everything, which has its advantages, like a super-sharp picture and the cost factor. Please don't count out the older games in the series just because they have teh bloky graphics. You get used to it after a while, and they scroll smoothly (providing you tweak the emu's video settings), unlike a certain DW game on PS1. DWIV is entertaining enough to make you forget about the really old-school graphics. And the DWIII remix pushes the GBC to the absolute max, with more detail than any NES game or GBC game before it.

Do what you want, but I hightly reccomend starting with the NES games. Since each sequel improves upon the last, you'll get a greater appreciation for them that way.

Dragon Quest games came out way earlier US Dragon Warrior counterparts. The original Dragon Quest for the Famicom came out in in 1986 and by the time the first game was localized in the US, the series was already up to part IV in Japan

I just bought DW 3 for gbc today, and it's definately addictive and tons of fun.

I was thinking of starting a thread similar to this. I never played any DQ games back in the day, and to date I've only played DW1 on GBC (with a FAQ). How long do most of these games take to finish, anyway? I have have to say I've been a little hesitant afteer often reading people spending 80-100 hours+ on DW7...

The first four aren't real huge, at least not in comparison to the behemoth that is VII. I'd say twenty-thirty hours, tops, but it's been quite some time since I played IV.

In the Sea Cave where you get the Eye of Malroth (or whatever it's called in the remake). All of the background tiles started to fuck up, so I couldn't see where the hell I was walking. It could be just an emulator glitch (ZSNES) or I accidently hit the key that toggles the "bg offset" or whatever it's called, which will fuck the background up. I'll get back to you on that.

Heh, well, just to let you know I am about 15hrs into DQV(SFC) and I'm really getting into it. Boy are those graphics really retro! I mean can 2D character sprites get any smaller :lol: Surprisingly, the graphics are growing on me but it's the story that's got me intrigued so far.

I am right at the point where the hero(Papas' son) is an adult, escaped from the enslavement camp, went to the huge city with the casino, bought my first caravan and I'm now in the cave again from the first town where Papas took me. Cought my first monster too...the Work(sp?). Looking for this alledged valuable item in the cave the old man told me about. Is it in that chest across the green stuff I cant step across?

It's funny cause I'm starting to appreciate the fact that as a result of SFC rpgs being 2D and on a cart, I do not have to put up with loading times and long, unnecessary cut scenes before battles. I don't think I could sit that all day long playing something like say, FFX.

Wow the more I get into this game the more I love it! Just had to decide who I wanted to marry and I'm sure you'll agree that choosing Bianca was the correct choice. I mean C'mon, I barely even knew that Flora chick:p She's nice and all, But she aint no Bianca. And Bianca's toughness kinda turns me on :) Can't understand why she didn't recognize Borongo even though he was in my party when she joined again :(

BTW, recruited about 10 monsters so far :) Who are were your favorites? I'm digging Pierre and Gandulf.

Well guys, I just wanted to let you know that I just completed DQ V for the SFC yesterday. Man, I'm at a lost for words. This was one of the most kick ass rpgs I've played in a long while. Yes, there were a few annoyances here and there, but my God, what a story! And the monster recruiting system is just too much fun(props to my homeboy Curie for your excellent healing abilities. Wouldn't have made it without ya! ^-^). You guys were right on the money about this series being very traditional and straightforward but you know what? I loved it anyway!

The story wasn't super duper epic and over the top but it was told in such an entertaining fashion that I couldn't wait to see how it wrapped up and how the hero would go about finding his mother. I ended up marrying Bianca because she kicked so much ass and I really enjoyed her cuteness and lightheartedness at the beginning when she saved little Borongo :)

The battle interface was simple but I didn't mind and though the battle frequency was pretty high, it help my party in a big way leveling up to where I needed to be towards the end. Not a particularly difficult RPG, 'cept for Bruon and Esturk(bonus dungeon). Man those guy were tough. Mildrath was kinda easy, though I admit I used the "Terrific Slash" trick with the hero. For the record, beat it with my hero being at level 62, while the kids and a couple other monsters I used often were right around level 45-50.

Graphics didn't bother me at all after a while, though I admit I did think to myself "Man, I can't for the eye candy in DQ VI".

Anyway this game was fantastic and definitely worth playing. I was absolutely hooked for the 10 days or so I played it. OmegaFlare you were right about the music too it was very nice(the sailing theme is beautiful, as well as the music played in various towers).

Well, unless you recommend otherwise, I am moving on to VI. I'm trying to keep my expectations low but it's going to be difficult after reading so many good things about it. I *did* briefly fire up the import version of DQ III Remix for the GBC(I don't have an English copy yet). I dunno....not sure I can deal with such a limted color pallette on a big screen TV...but then the discovery of the lack of backgrounds upon entering into a quick battle really really turned me off. Not to mention I'm not sure I can go without monster recruiting anymore...it was just so much fun. So am I right in assuming part V and upwards have monster recruiting but none of the games previous to that(including remixes) have them? Oh well, VI and VII should keep me busy for awhile. Perhaps I'll jump into I&II Remix after I play those...*shrug*

isamu, have you ever heard the dragon quest suite? it's essentially every dragon quest song ever written, arranged for and played by the tokyo symphony. i have a feeling you'd be interested.

if you are referring to the 7 disc orchestrated box set then yes, I own and have heard it many times since I first bought it last year at AX. Heh, went and bought a big ass 7 disc OST box set for a game franchise having not played even one installment yet. Pretty strange 'eh?

I can't comment on how it looks on a TV since I've only ever played it using a GBC, but trust me, the graphics are VERY good for a GBC game. Did you notice how smooth the monster animations are? The 32 megs crammed into that little cart were put to good use. My advice - play it on a GBC or GBA. It's a great game, especially contrasted against the original.

If you like the monster recruiting that much, definitely check out Dragon Warrior Monsters (and DWM 2) for GBC; it's nothing but monster recruiting/breeding (Metal Slimes kick ass). There are a few recruitable monsters in VI (but nowhere near the amount you can get in V), and even a Slime Arena side-quest where you can pit your best slime character against others. Unfortunately, there's no monster recruiting in VII. In VII, you can find monster hearts that let you change your class to the specific monster, and you can gather monsters to put in your monster park, but none that actually join your party.

WOAH!!!! That's dissapointing news I didn't know that! Thanks for the clarifications. Looks like V is the only one that allows that many monsters to aid you in battle. Oh well, thems the breaks I guess. Yeah, I noticed the animations on the monsters in III, that was a nice touch. But damn, could it have hurt them to add some kind of background art? Well, what I think I'll do is play the remix of I&II on the SFC, then I will give the remix of III on the GBC another chance and try REAL HARD to get past the GBC's primitive graphics and "bleep blop" sound limitations.

But right now, my mouth is watering for VI :D

Guys...can someone tell me what the deal is with this DQ VI patch? To my knowledge I have patch 0.40 and so far only about 60-65% of the dialog has been translated! Now, I have just returned to castle Reidock with the MIrror of Ra like the Castle General asked me to do and NONE of the dialog during this important cut scene about my return is translated!!!! It's all blank! Can someone please address this issue? Is there a more recent patch say, after 0.40 that maybe I need to get? I was led to believe that a 90% English translation was accurate and that only a couple of towns (Lifecod) were unstranslated. This has not been the case. Several characters are just untranslated blanks!

Please help...I am really getting into the game!

FYI...I'm using the latest ZSNES WIP.

NoProgress is one guy, and also part of the Dejap team. The 90% patch is all his work, Dejap is continuing from there.(the 40% patch is the old one before they continued from this patch.

As far as I can tell, not at all. 6 and 7 have a few gameplay similarities (job system, alternate worlds), but that's as close as they get to each other.

I liked the trilogy concept. Imagine my astonishment the first time I played DW3 as I found myself in Alefgard near the end of the game, and I turn out to be Loto/Erdrick himself.

Hi guys. For those of you who have played DQ VI I'd like your advice on the following....

Here are the following stats for my current party:

Guld(my Hero's name) - Lv 28, Beastmaster

Hans - Lv 28, Fighter(physical type)

Mira - Lv 27, Priest

Chamoro - Lv 24, Priest

Amos - Lv 17, Soldier

Barbara - Lv 18, Wizard

I have just beaten Jiramah at his "Land of Happiness" Castle and received the floating Island. Problem is, I went and assigned jobs to all my party members a while ago, right after I beat Mudo and Dharma Temple was reconstucted. But up until now, so far none of them are advancing in their jobs except Barbara and, Chamoro, and somewhat slowly, the recently aquired Amos. The Hero, Hans and Mira are going NOWHERE, despite having fought what must have been at least a hundred monsters already after doing the Seed of Reasoning and Terry the Hero scenarios. I know it said that the monsters I fight need to be around my level to advance jobs, but where do I find said monsters and how do I know whether they are around the Hero, Hans and Mira's level?

Looking at my levels for the Hero, Hans, and Mira so far, what kind of monsters would you say I need to fight and at what location? Or perhaps I'm missing something?

Well, I finally beat DQ I and II Remix for the SFC just minutes ago.

I was a nice charming little game. But II, man, talk about an excersise in tedium!

I got to the last little shrine in Rhone, then talked to the priest, healed and saved my game. Then talked to the lady, who told me I can enter the portal to return to Beran. So I did. The problem? You need the jailor's key to get back into Beran, and like a crack angel I fucked around deposited it into the fucking VAULT!!!! :bang:

This meant that I could not get back into Beran and thus could not travel back to any towns NO MATTER WHAT, because I did not possess the damn key and there was NO way around it! You're probably wondering, why do I need to go back to Beran why not just continue on to Hargon's castle? Well, I would have, only problem is I also deposited the fucking Eye of Malroth and could not continue onto the second floor of the castle without it!

So... I looked at my save state inventory and realized that I used ALL my save slots while in the Rhone cave and still could not get back into Beran! I tried casting return but the problem is I fucked that up by saving the normal way at the shrine in Rhone, thus warping me back there.

I had to start the fucking game ALL OVER FROM SCRATCH and begin a new quest just because of one fucking Key!!!! I was going to say screw it, but I figured I MUST complete DQII for completeness!!! So I did. Another 30hrs wasted, and I'm finally done. Yippee! Playing 6 RPGs in a row will surely burn you out. Back to THUG :D

Dude, that sucks. But instead of starting over, you could have leveled the princess to 23, which is when she gets the Open spell. As its name implies, it can open any locked door. I'm sure that would've been much faster than starting all over.

A) I own the first one on GBC. It's okay, but it SUCKS that controlling your characters manually requires you to actually select "Command" from the change tactics menu. Otherwise, it's AI by default, and it's typical suck-shit DQ AI.

It's also full of random dungeons. Well, they're not really "dungeons", more like areas with fields/forests/mountains, etc. but they're randomly generated, which makes hunting for items a real chore. Where I'm at in the game, the dungeons are like, 24 floors long. They take FOREVER, and you can't save unless you luck out and get a special floor.

Like I said, it's an okay game. It's full of fanservice, and if you've played DQ1-6, you'll recognize a lot of locations, music, etc. You can also breed your monsters, which is pretty cool. Metal Slime + Metal Slime = Metal Babble. I have a metal slime with 90 HP, and it only takes 1 HP of damage at a time. Rock.

B) Probably not. The DWM games on GBC didn't sell very well. Enix did a remake for Playstation, but that didn't make it out here. If I were you, I'd be wishing for Slime Morimori DQ instead, that game looks great.

It's a top-down action/adventure game where you play as a slime. You can download the Japanese commercial for it here (scroll down a bit). It'll show you some gameplay footage.
