I have about 40-45 gc games and about 25 for the ps2 and xbox each.
The ps2 always seems to come out with more rentals than purchases.
Warp what did you do to make that pickup of yours be invisible? Is it just my background color?
I only recently picked up my PS2....hence the lack of games. I mainly bought it for DDR.Quote:

Nowadays I'm getting multi-plat games on the box though.
Ok, what the fuck is this, I thought this thread was for discussion of the game.
Go get an IGN collection page, jesus.
SpoDaddy's game collection scares and confuses me.
Seconded. I've had my PS2 since late '01, and it's still going strong.Quote:

On topic: I really want this game. My assistant manager at work is going nuts over it.
Back to the game, I'm now in the Dark World and I found the first key that's not too far from the panel you have to unlock. Anyone pass that part yet?
Oh yeah. I think we're all past that. I'm not much farther past that though, got 2 keys and am about to pick up the third. Also unlocked the 40% scans gallery.
That's awesome Cow. I know that I'm in the 35+ % in scanning, I have to, I'm scanning and reading everything. Where did you get the 2nd key?Quote:

It was on the top floor on a ledge in plain view, so that's probably the one you've gotten. I think I'll go play now and get the third one. There's 2 doors I haven't checked out yet.
wtf, dark beam. I don't have no stinkin Dark Beam =O. And why should I turn the hint system off? It didn't even give me hints so far, save a room to save in at the Great Temple but I was already right in front of it.Quote:

Heh, I'm just taking a break for now since I have some schoolwork to write up. Very light and expected spoiler.I picked up the 3 keys, killed the 3 headed worm boss and Samus went all crazy and got the Dark Suit. At first, it really feels like a shitty accessory, especially since you go threw all the trouble to find those 3 keys, but you really love having it around later on.Quote:

Bump, even though it's only been unanswered for like 6 hours.
Got pretty far tonight, I'm not in a cylinder room with spinning platforms and a deep murky pool. The first thing I noticed when walking in the room was the music. Maridia! =D I'm stuck, but at least there's some good beats to drown in. Wooo.
If anyone's at that part, let me know how you reached the 2 higher terminals underwater. I only hit the first one. =(

Oh yeah...don't leave this area too soon...you'll need to really explore it before you leave.
I picked up the Spider ball tonight...after entering a whole new area...which looks very cool! Torvus Bog seems a little bogged down compared to this new area and Agon Wastes...It's so much more confusing....I was glad to be able to leave it finally.

Thanks, I'll get right to it. I forget if the dark door is easy to access but I'll see in a minute. I'm really surprised at how MP2 still keeps that "ambience" from the first one, and makes it feel very different and not "more of the same" like we all claimed it would be.Quote:

I can't believe how long this game is, it just keeps on giving. I recently got 80% scans so I must be getting close to the end.

Why don't any other current gen games have anywhere near this games' level of craft, design, and detail? I mean, Xbox in particular is capable of way more than GC technically, yet this game easily destroys anything it's offered so far graphics-wise. The visual excellence of this game really exposes how little developers are really taking advantage of current-gen consoles' capabilities.
Because, seriously, for the 100th time, the XBox is not as graphically capable as the GC. This is what happens when a game is tailor made to the GCs archetecture. Nothing I've played looks anything close to the Metroid Prime games. I'm including Half Life 2 ( on my system-60 fps w/ most detail levels at medium to high) and Doom 3 (although actually that would probably be subjective) and obviously Halo 2 (it really doesn't rate to be in this comparison).Quote:

plus Retro knows that Textures are more important than polys when making 3D images, something very few other devs seemed to have learned yet
I completely agree with you there. If the PS2 can still have great games graphically then what the hell could Xbox or GC do if given the time.Quote:

Home stretch now, just in time. Finished Halo 2, HL2, MGS3, and going to try to finish MP2 tonight. All just in time for WoW to come out tommorow ;)

I agree completely. I think KBuchanan's point is that the GameCube hardware is superior to Xbox when it comes to textures and passes. GameCube really does give Xbox a run for it's money with games designed specifically for it, like RE4 and the Prime games. The thing with Xbox is that it's a PC essentially, it doesn't have the same sort of quirks that console hardware does. I think that makes it easier to make an Xbox game look good, but I also think when all is said and done the best looking Cube game will blow away the best looking Xbox game. Especially considering the fact that MS is already ditching Xbox for Xbox2, which I think is insane.Quote:

When all is said and done some of the most magical games come out of systems at the end of their lives, it's really lame when a console's lifespan is cut short. For me 5 years is the minimum.
So I also finally got the light armor and I am now searching for the nine keys. I believe I found 4 of them so far. Here's a quick tip for anyone at that stage
Using the dark visor in the light world you can search for the invisible vessels that carry the nine keys. if they are in a room you will see an outline of it in the light world. Then all you have to do is search for a portal and make your back there in the dark world and you will see the creature in the exact same spot in the dark world.
Sine the clues are more cryptic then they were in the first prime it helps a lot to just search for them in the light world rather than having to hop back and forth all the time.
D
Just so every one knows, the music in Torvus Bog's lower water area is more Brinstar music than Maridia music, while it is true that Maridia did have that music in a part of it, it was a MUCH smaller percentage of of Maridia than Brinstar.
Just thought I should clear that up. [/Metroid Geek]
Just got Gravity Boost last night and found the subsequent Boss exceptionally easy. Dissappointingly easy actually but hey that's just me. Dash boost boss did rape me for a while so odds are bigger better badder bosses are in store.
This is a nice idea but not functional. There's a few problems:Quote:
developers need to learn how to really use the hardware that's out there now, I don't think any dev has really taken the Xbox or GC to it's limits yet
01. Exactly when do developers say, "okay, we've learned it, no more we can do"? All "limits" of hardware is theoretical, and you can always get an extra 1% or 2% if you really try hard. So for how long should developers really try?
02. When developers are finally done with one system, how will they move on to another if its not at least in the planning stages? Like when developers say, "no more we can do", something has to be ready to go. So people have to be working on new hardware.
03. In the past, we've seen hardware hit these amazing graphical heights really quickly, but then not much more gets done past that. Think of PlayStation - in 1998, Metal Gear Solid and Gran Turismo both came out. Technically, far superior to anything else before it. But after that... eh not much more came out that looked better. Looking back, its easy to see that the PSX was pretty much tapped by the end of 1998. Of course, though, we looked at MGS and GT and said "woah if these guys could do that, theres probably TONS more power left". Which there wasnt. So it happens really suddenly, and we can only see that point in retrospect. So what Im saying is, that its entirely conceivable that games like Metroid Prime 2 and Conker's Bad Fur Day are indeed the reasonable "limits" of the hardware.
I mean, basically what you're saying is that you wish hardware would stick around so developers can be forced to make better and better looking games. But how long do they stick around? When do we know they hit their limit? We dont, which is why we need new hardware to be coming down the pipe.
except the average developer right now isn't using multiple textures per pass to their fullest which the GC and Xbox have no problem doing in hardware, in that sense these systems havent hit their limit
3d is all about the textures, the games that look the best don't have to push the most poly's they have the best texture work
which is something the GC and Xbox have no problem doing and very few developers are taking advantage of that
what I'm saying is I wish Develoeprs would take advantage of the texturing capabilities built into the Xbox and GC hardware to make nice looking games
If most developers arent taking advantage of using 6 - 8 textures per pass, why rush to give them 12 - 16 to work with
very few games are taking advantage of the raw mapping abilities of both systems that have been there since day one
Actually, in recent games I think developers have gotten much better at textures. Look at games like Halo 2 and Otogi 2. What these and others still lack is better lighting models, but I think really good ones would be too processor intensive for the current consoles. So really have hit their limit, or come fairly close to it.
Ehh, what's with all these threads getting derailed? Not pointing fingers to anyone but...
Just finished playing for the night. Got the Light Suit and it's fricking cool. I'm all set to go find the 9 remaining keys across the Dark World. I forgot how much more interesting Metroid games are when you have all the power ups and can just start exploring. Aaah. =D
I think people are just saying its sad to see a system go before its potential has been reached. I dont think anyone wants to beat the horse after a point of diminishing returns, but five years is too short a time to realise the systems limits. Thats how I feel anyway.Quote:

Excluding some company that wants to throw a ton of money into R&D for graphic engines for these systems, Im sure we'll get real close to thier limits.
Moving on...
But then it doesnt really matter does it? I mean, you can throw a ton of poly's at something, texture it like there's no tomorrow, but in the end it comes down to the ability of the artist. A high poly model with asstastic art will still look like crap. Its not only subjective to personal taste, but also to the ability of the artist.
But on with the game. Ive gotten up to the spiderball boss, and I hate him. With fervant passion. Its not that he is terrubly difficult, but because of the way its set up, I couldnt see certain aspect of the level that I needed to. So i spend hours on one section, trying to figure out how Im supposed to do it. I havent had the heart to go back to it after I figured it out. Since I was so low on health, I could finish the battle with him, so I commited suicide. I then realised how far back I saved and just kinda feel blah about going back through those areas. Still though, Im loving it way more than when I first started playing it.
You do realized that during that fight hitting the X button will pull the camera back to give you a full view of the area you are in so you can figure out what you have to do?
Try it, it makes that boss much easier.
D
Honestly, its really not. The PlayStation came out in Japan in 1994 and hit its peak in 1998. I really doubt we'll see games that look so much better than Conker BFD or Metroid Prime 2 (that Zelda surely doesnt). And thats only 3-3.5 years.Quote:

Plus, I mean, look at what Betheseda is doing with the new Elder Scrolls. That game alone should tell you that developers are ready for new hardware.
The harder a system is to code for, the longer it takes to reach its peak. That simple.
Definitely true, so clearly both the GameCube and Xbox are easy to code for.Quote:

But when all is said and done, I really don't give a flying fuck wether or not you like Halo 2.
I'd just like to point out the dual wielding in Goldeneye was still mapped to one trigger so when firing both guns you were still holding down one button. Of course it's been a while so correct me if I'm wrong.
In Halo 2 each gun is mapped to it's own trigger thus adding more strategy to how you kill your foes, especially since they have regenerative shields. I just thought I'd chime in on a Metroid thread and point that out.
Y'all come back now you here.
D
An excellent point dyomides.
In Goldeneye you did have to use both guns at once. In Halo 2 you can start with one gun and finish of with the other. It is especially useful with the Pistol/SMG combo. Since the pistol is a good mid range weapon and the SMG is a good close range weapon, the tactic is to start from a distance with the pistol but wait till you are right next to them to use the SMG, that conserves ammo for when it is most needed but gives you a head start in the race to inflict the most damage.
The controls are pretty stock standard FPS controls these days, Half Life on PS2 has identical control set ups for the most part.Quote:

What else makes this God send of FPSes? Why should this get play time instead of Counter Strike or UT or whatever? I'm still waiting for some one to tell me what Halo has done that's so exemplary, to me, Halo seems like a pretty average FPS.
There is no reason to fuck with perfection. I doubt Bungie has any regrets for not incorporating a non standard and flawed controll scheme.Quote:

I haven't seen the new Elder Scrolls. I'll go check it out. But I know there are people that just recently came out with new graphics engines for PS2 for example. I know the PS2 has alot more untapped potential than the Xbox or GameCube, but seeing how much more they are able to sueeze out of it is amazing. Im willing to bet the Xbox and GC still have quite a bit of potential left. Its just a question of whether or not the cost is worth it, but with new systems just around the corner I doubt we'll find out.Quote:

The original Prime was the only game that's ever given me motion sickness. I remember reading that the developers were aware there was some kind of problem with the first one and they were taking steps to change that. Did they succeed?
Not that I've heard of, this game looks much better imo, but it never gave me any seizures or the like.
Look at the previews of Resident Evil 4 and compare that to any game available today before saying that GameCube has already hit it's peak.
I just got the screw attack, took me like an hour to get the hang of screw jumping across a gap. There's something insanely fun and addictive about doing it, I find myself looking for previously unreachable ledges just so I can jump across the screen to them. Now that I'm well past the halfway point I can say for certain that this is one of the best games ever made, the best game of this generation, and the best Metroid game ever.

I see a lot of hatred towards opinionated individuals for no other reason than the fact that they don't agree with your individual opinion which just seems useless to me. You come here to have a disscussion yet if any one brings a different perspective the insults start to fly.
Personally I enjoy reading everyones opinion, I might not post much but I do read everyones opinion and value their input. However it is frustrating to see subjects not pertaining to the threads title as well as pure and simple attacks between each other. Sometimes I get a chuckle from some witty retort, it is not why I visit the thread.
So DiffX, Slip, MVS and all others who continually seem to get a lot of hate thrown their way lately, remember that some of us still like to read your posts as long as they are thread related and not insulting other forum goers.
Back to Metroid I tried playing a bit yesterday but my wife wouldn't have it. I was looking for a fifth temple key. I wish they would highlight the clues that you've already found cause I found a few before I really started looking and now I'm left wondering which ones I should really be going after.
Any tips on how to proceed?
D
I really like the screw attack too....but the coolest use for it is wiping out those hacker droid things... one hit and they're gone...even if the shield is up =)Quote:

If you go to the Temple Key Entrance in the Dark World, there are a bunch of pillars around the main portal, giving hints. One of the last sentinels of Luminoth left them all around the room. It's really helpful since I was going to give up last night until I checked the room and found a bunch of clues.Quote:

-Needless to say, the Dark World is maybe 1/10th of the Light World, so its realy easy.
-Check around using the Dark V, then when you find one of those floating vessels shoot it once, then go back to the combat visor. You should be fine.
Actually if you walk around in the light world with the dark visor you can see the outline of the vessel in the dark world. To access it you can only get to it in the dark world however but at least you know they will be there.
Also I already have those clues but I don't know which four I already picked up, which is why I was asking if you knew if there was a way of knowing which of the keys you already picked up since I already have four without ever having looked at the clues and I can't remember where I got them. I guess I'll just have to do it by elimination.
Thanks anyways,
D
You obviously haven't played it. I'm not even an FPS fan and the most I can say against it is that it's not THE greatest game ever (To me, I'm sure if you hold the genre in higher esteem you could very well see it that way), but it's one of them. What's more, I had a friend over yesterday who also isn't into FPS games. He played it and felt the same way I did. From th very start, you're drawn right into this world. It consumes you.Quote:

Go back to being banned.
Except we all love Metroid Prime, and I even reviewed it for TNL and gave it an A.Quote:

I haven't played it because Nintendo sucks.
Hmm, makes sense, its such a long and epic game, its really hard to try it from the start again. The second one has its moments where I felt like turning it off, but only due to the long hours I'd play it in one shot. Still, if you liked Prime, give it a shot.Quote:

After playing Prime the first time during Christmas season, I played some more in Normal until I had 90+ % and then jumped to hard. I'll admit that it is really hard to replay this game immediately, since it's so overjoying to get your suit upgraded and be able to walk and blow up anything on the planet.Quote:

I've played through it twice :)Quote:

I don't see myself going through this nearly as much. So far it's very fun, but I don't think it's quite the game that the first Prime was, and still is.
I agree with Sethsez...the first had something intangible (or something I can't verbalize) that made it have extra loads of fun. I've only played it twice but I think about playing it alot, heh.
...Knowing omfgninjas's real name is kind of weird.
You should still try Echoes, Eric.
Yeah, and it wasn't just the fact that Samus was on Tallon IV, an inhabited Chozo planet, but something else. I'll agree that Prime was a far better experience, but Echoes was nevertheless awesome, it's just that sometimes it felt more like an upgrade of the first with no style to call its own.Quote:

Oh, Echoes definitely has its own style, it's just not a style that can sustain an entire gameworld.Quote:

He loves it now, but says the beginning starts off slow? Does anyone agree with him? I found the hanging Marines off the wall fricking cool. Comments! =D
The beginning is definitely lacking compared to Super and Prime. This one just sort of... starts.
Yeah...I like Prime because it was so immersive and because it was just you in one huge planet. But when I go back to Prime, I notice a bunch of little details that were beefed up in Echoes and it makes me gag. For instance, the character model on Samus in Prime isn't as cool as in Echoes, but that's not something you can really complain about. Phendrana Drifts is still hella cool though. I started a game last night and I just reached the place.Quote:

Not stuck, just... not particularly interested in continuing. I'm going to finish it soon, but there's nothing in the game that really drives me to do so.
One thing I don't like about Echoes, believe it or not, IS the Samus model. Most of the model is very cool, but her faceplate is too clear. In artwork and previous games, it's always almost solid or completely solid green, and here it's like slightly tinted glass. Echoes is definitely sharper and more detailed than Prime, but all the details just don't add up to much of anything for me.
Still a fantastic game overall. Just not nearly as compelling as Prime.
That happened to me halfway in the game, I must have had 63% scans or so when I just got bored, but I'm sure it was more due to the fact that I was on Echoes for the last 6 hours that day.Quote:

If you go back to Prime, you'll notice how much bigger they are, it seems less proportionnate, especially next to her head. My mouth was watering when she crash landed on Aether and did her traditional jump onto the new planet, <3 Shine.
Luckily, the Dark World is about one tenth of the Light world, so you'll be roaming through it during the first half of the game, then you'll be pretty busy in the Light world, however getting the 9 keys of the Sky Temple forces you to head back to the Dark side.
Finished it. I think overall I preferred the first, for a variety of reasons. Still a great game, but lacking in some aspects (very few gameplay related, fortunately). Largely story.
Missed a few of the one time scans apparently, wound up in the high 90s :/ No boss gallery for me, I doubt I'll replay it for 100%
I'm accepting tips and tricks for the final boss.
I got him to his third transformation, I'm guessing theres one more transformation after that since I have him scanned up to 80%.
Thanks in advance,
D
