tokyo game show 2002
TGS is coming up on September 21st and 22nd, and I've been thinking of going. Is anyone else here planning on attending? Any Japanese residents? I'd likely stay for a week, and could use someone to show me around a bit.
Also, if anyone has made the journey in the past and feel they have some sound advice, lay it on me. Thanks.
-
I've been to four since I've been here.
Johnny, where are you staying at? Ironically, the TGS is actually in Chiba, which is a ways from Tokyo (about 2 hours away from Tokyo itself).
Hmmmm....all I can say is this...
Bring as much money as humanly possible. There will be so much that you might want to buy such as souvenirs, mooks, and just about everything else- and it's not cheap. You'll find yourself spending a lot quickly...
If you get there a day or so early, you might want to get to the exhibition hall early. The first day will be hectic. (You'll see people lined up 8-12 hours before the doors open! With that said, it will be cold, so dress accordingly and bring something to do (to kill time...)
Have a good camera on hand. What better way to get some of the awesome sights!
If I think of anything else (or if there are any specific questions) feel free to ask.... :)
-
Money won't be an issue. What part of Japan are you located in? Do you know of any great little videogame shops? I wouldn't mind picking up Radient Silvergun or something, and gouging people on Ebay later on.
I'm not waiting 12 hours to get in though, however I'd still like to pay Japan a visit. The JET program interests me a little, and I've been toying with the idea of teaching English. That's still a ways off though, since I can't make a decision without actually having visited the place.
-
PICTURES, I wanna see PICTURES!
And tell us lots guys. HAVE FUN! :)
-
-
I stay in Yokosuka, some 50 km from Tokyo.....
Radiant Silvergun??? Shouldn't be a problem.
If you are serious about coming, do let me know. Maybe we can meet and I'll show you around Tokyo--especially Akihabara--where there are a lot of game shops.... :D
-
Hey Johnny can you pick me up a radiant silvergun while you are there?
I would gladly pay you a resonable price. ( whatever the game cost you and then a little extra for your trouble)
Any takers? I want it badly but I really don't want to make some ebay hawk rich because he has connections...

Heh.

If I were going to Akihabara, I'd take the opportunity to pick up something actually rare- as opposed to something that's just expensive.

I second that notion. What I would do to get a gold Punch-Out or a Kunio-kun no Dodgeball Tournament Special.
-
I'd LOVE to have a PCE Duo (or a PCE/interface/SCD combo)! How much do those run over there?
-
Did that N64 actually work? Pretty wild shit.
-
I remember reading about those pictures (can't remember if it was here, or what).
Apparently the N64 did work.
-
Seven Force - I may have asked you before, but are you a native? If not, what is your means of staying over there?
And don't forget folks, if you make a trip to Osaka in the next year (or longer if I can swing it), shidoshi would be happy to meet up with you and show you the town (at least, the parts he knows). And, if I'll be able to manage it, I'm seriously considering starting up a little service where I pick up hard to find things for people from Japan. I won't buy things that are easy to snag from NCS and the like, instead I'd be looking at things impossible to get in the US (capsule toys, other little goods, etc.), things that are near impossible to find anymore, or stuff I can get for really good deals (the $50 PS2 ParaParaParadise game + controller, for example).
I just have to find out first how much free time I'm going to have to do such a thing, and how often I'll have internet access to keep up on orders.
-
Shidoshi...I am an American who is in the military(just don't send any bombs this way)

Which version are you getting at? The Saturn version will run you about $120 (I swear) and the ST-V version itself will run you about $100. I could save you a little on shipping too. Get with me and I can maybe I can arrange that for you--and save you heaps...
Shidoshi, sorry if this comes off as "hatin'"... :)

Well, seeing as how I'm not quite sure what part of it would be hating, I'm guessing there's no offense taken. ^_^

Then why is it called the 'Tokyo Game Show' if it takes place in Chiba? Chiba is like a totally different prefecture.
-
Howdy there folks! After browsing this site for a while now I couldn't help but be tempted to post on this here thread. I'm off to Tokyo on the 21st September on a gaming consumer frenzy (hopefully. It didn't quite turn out like that last year). I'm just on the lookout for some tips on anything I missed last time around, like PCB shops and any good secondhand game shops. I know of a few in Akihabara and Shinjuku but I know a fair few are hidden away like a needle in a haystack (like Mak Japan, I gotta find that place:)) Any help would be appreciated.
-
Hee hee hee, Pocari Sweat. :)
-
Deptuy Fuzz,
There are four or so PCB shops in Akiba-and Mak is one of them. Secondhand shops? There are a bunch around....Stay in touch and we can possibly meet when you get here...

For the same reason that the New York Jets and Giants play in New Jersey - the real estate cost and subsequent rental fees for a massive convention hall in Tokyo is loony.
And you guys are all makin' me freakin' jealous - hey Seven Force, any Canadian troops in tokyo?
-
StriderKyo...
I've seen a few here and there...

If the saturn version costs $120 then I might as well make snipe hit on ebay for that. I don't really have a hundred bones to shell out for one game at this point in time. I figured the game itself used would be somewhere in the $30 range and then with shipping and flipping you some extra money I might spend in the 50-70 range.

Sorry...that's just the harsh reality of it all. Sometimes when I ask "really?" to the shop staff, I often get, "This is discount price!". For that game, you're gonna spend some bills.... :(

Really? That's cool, I'll have to look into that. I'd been thinking of enlisting for a couple of years to help pay for grad school, and if I could do it in Tokyo, that'd be the ultimate. I was at KyoDai when I was there before, so I didn't get to spend much time in Tokyo.
-
Hmmmmm
I'm not sure as to how much military from Canada is over here, but you never know...there just might be some in Yokosuka or Yokohama or somewhere like that...As you know, be prepared to work hard for your stay... :D
-
Can you get me some used schoolgirl panties from those vending machines? lol
-
School girl panties?? Naaah...but maybe I can get those big white socks for ya.......

Hi there Sevenforce. Cheers for the info, I found a few secondhand shops around Akihabara last time like Trader 1 & 2 (they do a damn fine deal on PC Engine games I'd say) but I didn't trace a single PCB shop. Hoping for better luck this time, hankering for Storm of Progear you see :) The meeting up thing sounds pretty cool to me, it'd be blessed thing to be able to speak to a fellow english speaker over there, lol.
-
Deputy Fuzz
If you found Trader 1 & 2, then you had to have passed by at least one of the PCB shops. If you know where the larager Gamers shop is at, then there is G-front. And Mak! is a block or so down from the Messe Sanoh building (also on the main street).
Do keep in touch. I'll gladly show you around a little more and embark on the ultimate gaming quest. :D

Yeah straight up, I went in Gamers and Messe Sanoh last time but it looks like I completely missed these other places (talk about dung pie right in the eyes, lol). Messe Sanoh kinda freaked me out last time as there were two guys literally fighting over who got to go on Dreamcast Mark of the Wolves that was on play outside. It was kinda funny to see a real Streetfighter 2 going on. Embarking on the ultimate gaming quest sounds right up my street, I didn't get to do as much as I wanted to last time as I was more worried about finding my way around (dang it's a confusing place, I'd appreciate the help). How confusing do you find it out there or have you got used to it now?
-
This thread sounds like it has the potential to turn into a TNL groupe field trip. I'd be all over that if enough of us are serious about a trip to the TGS.
-
Come on!!!!
It will be great!!
To see all those Mai, Kasumi, and Chun-li cosplayers!
I'd glady show you around the "game tengoku" and make it an awesome experience--nothing less.
Any of you guys married? If not, you might find a wife here--and a red PocketStation!!

Honestly, if I had any clue what I was doing and had the cash to spare (which I might by then) I'd join you all. Certainly be fun!

Yeah man, it would beat those school trips we had to suffer when we were kids eh, lol. Although some of the places I used to go to were pretty smart, this Bird of Prey centre I went to once was just THE place for 10ft Golden Eagles with like ninja stars growing out of their feet (I had a vivid imagination when I was a kid I guess). Anyways all you fellas should come along as well, Tokyo is definately a great place to go to forget about your woes (until you catch a glance at your bank balance that is :)). It's definately worth the money.

Lots of Ayumi Hamasaki lookalikes with big baggy socks? *Sigh*.....there is a god it seems  If only I could speak Japanese properly, then I'd be sorted.
-
If there is a chance, any chance, of a group of us going to the tgs this september, them I'm in. I'd just want to know I'd have some people who knew the language and area before I hopped on a plane.
-
Don't even worry about the language barrier. There are a lot of girls who the language barrier. There are a lot of girls who speak (or at least understand) some English... :)
Meet the Miniska Police!!!

The more the merrier I say. From what I've seen of the place it's not that tricky to get around, most of the sign posts in the train stations and on the roads are in english. The language barrier is the dodgy one for me. Sevenforce mate, do you get on with the language over there?

I know enough to get by...Maybe my lady could teach enough "survival" Japanese....
-
years of interbreeding....all shot to hell.
-
What exactly do you mean??
-
ah, yes, interbreeding....
the Japanese have a strict culturual rule which basically forbids them from marrying outsiders (there is a Japanese word for this - but i digress)thus over time there gene pool has become saturuated, and has resulted in things such as strange looking legs, very short people, and odd arrangement of teeth.
every once and a while a goddess like Miwa Oshiro or Natsuko Tohno emerges from this gene pool, but beauties such as these are rare.
hence the statement, years of interbreeding shot to hell.:D
-
I see....
The Japanese are becoming more and more open to marrying gaijin. Heck, Mail-order brides is a booming business here-not only so Japanese ladies can get hooked up, but even a lot of the men order from abroad as well.
The whole interbreeding is shot to hell...a long time ago. This might actually be a good thing since fewer and fewer children are being born to Japanese couples.
Shame on you!! How could you bring those two up and forget the best this side of the Pacific?
