OutRun 2 Comes Home

I just played the OXM demo for this last night. I was trying to keep an open mind despite how often I heard Mzo tell me Outrun 2 sucked, but, well, he was right. The game does suck. Maybe I just haven't figured out the controls correctly, but, drifting seems to do nothing but hurt your speed most the time, the course designs are boring, the sense of speed is rarely there... It's just a very bland racer, especially when compared to the likes of Burnout 3. I do like all the Xbox Live features that they have planned for the final release, but that's not enough to save this game by a long shot.

On a side note, I actually enjoyed SNK vs Capcom: Chaos. It's no Third Strike, but I do think it's on par or maybe even better than Capcom vs SNK 2... even if they did screw up Chun Li's spinning bird kick...

So does turning. :-P There was only one or two times in the demo that drifting was worth a damn and that was for these two big circle turns. Rest of the demo? Useless.

Then it's not like the arcade version. Drifiting is a neccessity in the real deal. Maybe, like many demos, it's locked on a super-easy difficulty.

It is but it isn't. You are forced to take the easy route and it only goes for 3 sections of the course. Then it ends. You can adjust the difficulty of the traffic though.

I liked the demo. Feels a lot like the original Out Run to me. That means it's just a very shallow arcade racer with simple controls and chill out gameplay. It's not supposed to be Burnout 3, or GT4, or Gotham.

It's Out Run with butta smooth 3D graphics.

That's the thing with this game. It's not gonna have a widespread appeal.

This game was fan service, period. AM2 knew not to rock the boat and dramatically change the gameplay, lest they get cursed by all the fans hotly anticipating the game. Yet in all honesty, what can they change and still call the game "Outrun"? Not much. This game is in some ways limited by its legacy. And that's fine, if you enjoyed the original and/or know what you're getting: a racing game that's nothing like Burnout/PGR/GT, etc.

For what it is, it's a great game. If you look for or expect more, then you won't like this game, period.

Now you see why Sega doesn't remake so many of their games: they're damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Just got the pal version. Not bad, fun and quick racer. Sense of speed is there, and it gives u a quick fix. Drifting is done by breaking and accelerating. Wait for a price drop.
How do u enter the scud race levels?

still worth it period, just for those Daytona 2 and Super GT levels...where else we gonna get 'em at home?

The original outrun is a twitch racing game. Like beam rider and some of those old school games where you just dodge stuff till it gets really hard and cant dodge anymore. Simply for cruising and the high score. It doesn mean its shallow though. I love those types of games and they really should come back. Its kinda hard to explain but its jsut really deep in a fun and nerve wracking way. Kinda like the original Donkey Kong where all you did was climb ladders and jumped whatever Donkey Kong threw at Mario. Or Nights where you just fly around and do tricks. Brilliant games that can be described by a few play mechanics. Yet are set up so well it doesnt matter. I would never call these types of games shallow though.

The 8-player online mode should be really worth the price of admission if the mode is anything like Outrunners, Daytona, or Indy 500.

The sense of speed is not really there? Either you should try backing off on the Red Bull, or I'm going to be looking at a lousy port a few weeks down the road. Out Run 2's arcade version is definitely fast, and the video I've seen of the Xbox one looks no different.

I don't look for a GT4 or Gotham when I'm in the market for a racer- the closest I've gone to that would be Battle Gear 3, itself clearly an arcade game. This one'll suit me fine.

Any other impressions about 8 player on live? Anyone had any *lagless* races with 8 players?

I'm a little worried about the lag problems you guys have been talking about. I hope they don't plague the U.S. release. I'm also hoping the lag you speak of can be attributed to the poor network and overall internet conditions in the UK and Britain. I hear you guys have a very poor internet infrastructure and have a long way to go before you catch up the US' superior broadband infrastructure.

I also read that no matter where you live in the UK, and regardless of which broadband internet service provider you have, you can't get more than 700kb down/100kb up out there, period. If this is true it would explain why you guys have been lagging so much.

I plan on getting Comcast cable(it's a US based broadband cable service...doubt you blokes have ever heard of it.) soon and will order their best package....4mb down/384kb up. I will be keeping my DSL service and using it for web browsing while using my new cable broadband line strictly for Xbox Live. and the game itself is VERY buggy...I've been reading that some players have smooth games, while others get choppy online play with more then 4 players at a time...

How is the offline play? Any problems with that?

I guess I'm in the minority of gamers that doesn't care so much about online play. It's nice and all, but I still prefer single player games or having people right in the room with me.

It is also worth mentioning that the Xbox version of OutRun2, which hit European stores on Friday, will offer downloadable content at some stage soon... could these awesome new SP tracks be part of the mix...?

SOL(aprt of the SD team) has been asked this question and he said he SERIOUSLY doubts that they will write a download content patch for all those tracks, and to not get our hopes up :(

He did end it with an "anything's possible" disclaimer though :)

Why give away content when you can package it up and sell another version of the game? (Of course, they could just charge a fee for the content...)

I am very leery of expecting anything from "downloadable content." From my experience, most of the games that have that option either never use it or deliever several months after the game was initially released, and what gets provided ends up being underwhelming. I am sure some random example out there (one of the Splinter Cell or Rainbow Six games) bucks this trend, but I do not play those games. Hell expeting them to fix the bugs in the game is asking too much. :\

If the 15 tracks in SP are truly new as Kikizo says, then I'll willingly pay another $40 if/when they release an Xbox version. This doesn't look like another case of Street Fighter II syndrome.

My local EB said it was delayed to the 26th. Can anyone confirm this?

I could care no less about online as well. Lag blows. All that matters for me is that the standard 1P offline mode is spot-on with no framerate jags.

Usually multi-player games let you do all three. Single player, multi player on one console, or multi player online. Plus sports games even let you and 3 other buddies play 4 other chumps online if you get sick of playing each other. Its only for games that require each player to have a screen each where developers usually choose between online play or split screen. Otherwise online play isnt anything to complain about at all because its just simply an option you dont have to use most of the time. Why people have to bring it up as a negative all the time, usually exactly the way you worded it, is beyond me. Of course anyone would prefer having their competition right there in the same room, but no one says you cant have both. Plus 4-player split screen is the max with one TV set anyways. YOu would need two TV sets for 8-player get togethers. Besides, most developers make complex graphic engines that would give the developer a lot of work to turn it into 4-player split screen. They could use that time to make it a bigger scale online or improve the gameplay engine etc. There really is no negative to online play. So people need to stop saying the samething like I prefer having people in the same room as me. A good possibly 90+ % of the online games out there allow you to play with/against friends in the room. You might need some more computers and a link up though.

Yeah then dont play the game online. Play the game with people in the same room with you. Onlineplay is RARELY a NEGATIVE(not one at all when it comes to sports games and games that still have a split screen mode) because YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PLAY THEM ONLINE usually. There is NO POSSIBLE WAY where the exact same game without online play can be > than the exact game with online play. Why? Because you can play the damn game with people in the same room as you, OR(keyword) you can play the game online. If the game needs a 4-player split screen mode for it to be possible, then the game would be shittier game overall because the developer would waste too much time implementing a good graphics engine to handle it, when they can just make one graphics engine and make it online. I wasnt commenting on his question. I dont know why I would answer it, especially since I havent played the XBOX version. I was simply commenting about the "I would rather be play with other people in the same room" thing. Which IS stupid because its not like online play limits his ability to do that. I dont see why you would. Sega may rush some home console games but they never botched a STV - Saturn or Naomi - DC game. Sega ages doesnt count since most arent even developed by Sega. No one should be complaining about Model 2 - saturn ports. Thats like porting DC games on the PSX, its not gonna be pretty anyway you slice it. Of course I dont know if sumo digital is Sega, so that might be a problem but I dont think even genki would screw up an xbox - xbox port.

About time theres a few more people saying the demo sucked. Its a mediocre demo and if the game hasnt changed much I'd rent first. Reviews will range from 6's to 7's.

Edge gave the game an 8. Thats like crazy for edge who has steadily been giving games lower and lower scores.

The demo rules. I'm guessing most people who don't like it aren't OutRun fans to begin with. I can't picture many long time fans of the series being disappointed.

I hear several Toys R Us stores are selling OutRun 2 already. Wal-Mart and Target's websites are shipping it now, too.

Skelly's review sounds like the demo I played. I expect to love it but I suspect you'll hate it if you hate the demo.

According to what I read on the MS Retail team site, that had a whole thing devoted to release dates, they could be in a whole shitload of trouble for doing that.

Well I've been reading online that a lot of TRU stores in the US have broken the street date...still nothing in Canada :cry:

I've had the game since Sunday- my TRU broke street date :cool:

So far, I've only spent about an hour with it...so far I would have to give it a thumbs up. The remixed OR music is my favorite part.

Well, given the short amount of time I've played it I didn't notice any glitches. I don't buy racers often, so I also don't have a reliable means of comparing it to other such games.

The arcade mode feels more like a remake than a sequel, but I always can dig some arcade style racing. For me: arcade style > simulation

Ah...here's hoping for a release tomorrow. The EB guys at my local store said it might be pushed back a day...

LOL! Nobody is going to give a damn about OutRun 2 being sold early. Besides my store didnt get them yet. Probably Wednesday.

Now we we sold Halo 2 early.....

GS had this in today (the worker actually confessed they came in yesterday when I made fun of the street date sticker, he first said they came in today) and I picked it up. Good stuff, I really like it so far, very old-school. I'm a big fan of the current trend (this and Hard Drivin' in Midway Arcade Treasures 2) of having the right analog stick be the gear-shifter, feels better than pressing a button.

The smiley face when you have a AAA going is awesome, I want an animated gif of that.

I picked up mine yesterday...Its a VERY fun game. I've been playing through a lot of the missions. Some are tough as nails, others are super easy. Either way it keeps me playing :D

The secret tracks are awesome. Especially the one with the amusement park background. (That's Daytona 2, right?)

With the giant pirate ship??? if so then yep...Daytona 2 :sweat:

I've finished challenges 0-8 and 11 and have to say that this game is great. Pure, unadulterated, old school OutRun gameplay with modern visuals and a crapload of unlockables (OutRun 1 songs and remixes! Daytona 2 and Skud Racer tracks!).

This games rocks, hard.

As much as I ragged on Sega in this very thread, they added a whole shitload of stuff to Outrun 2 when they brought it up.

Very impressed. Probably my favorite arcade racer of the year.

so is it an exact replica of the arcade?(i know it runs on chihiro board, which is basically an xbox)

My copy of this should either be here Saturday or Monday, and from what I've read about this OR rendition vs. the arcade original is that it runs at 30 FPS instead of 60, and is otherwise identical.

That's just going by folks on GameFAQs, but given the techie stuff the OR 2 board folks tend to know, it's likely true. Hopefully, that isn't the case, but if it is, eh, no biggie, for me, anyway.

The demo in OXM was a solid 60 smooth as buttah.

Ok, the AI is cheap as hell. Whenever you go into a 180 degree turn, there's always at least 2 buses and a semi in the way. Moreover, whenever you hit one of the other cars in the singles race in challenge mode, you will either lose major speed or crash yet the other car won't even slow down. Heck, they'll even drift INTO you in a turn to hit you. Cheap, cheap, cheap.

Jef, I'm referring to the original OutRun on the OR 2 disc being 30 FPS. Melf, what difficulty are you playing with?

I've wanted to play this game ever since I first heard about it and I got my copy yesterday. I haven't put in a lot of time with it because I've been busy but from what I've played I fucking love it. Heart attack mode is so much fun.

I wish I had managed to get near a cab of this...

I'm going to run off to play some more.

Um, why all the low 8 scores? This game sounds like the ultimate twitch game and the modes reflect that. Plus 8 player online sounds like a complete blast, driving around and doing stupid license tests will never be in any shape or form better than racing 7 competent players online.

I would love to see AM2 make another space harrier. No, Planet Harriers doesnt count because it was more of a 3D shooter rather than a twitch high score game where you shoot and dodge a ton of obstacles int he background at pretty high speeds.

I mean, I find it hilarious every magazine praised the shit out of Gradius V, and it only managed to get low 8's as well.

It makes sense to me that these games are getting 8s, because they are fairly simple games that use a tried and true gameplay formula. Don't get me wrong I love both these games to death, but they are 8 games to me. 9 and 10 require a lot more than these two offer in terms of sequals. But thats just me.

You're joking, right? Most of the 9s are established franchises that don't add that much to the previous installment.

You can like Madden 2005 all you want, but it's pretty much the same game as the year before.

8? 9? 10? Whatever. If it's fun, it's fun. Someone's numerical value attached to a game doesn't affect my enjoyment of it whatsoever.

Depth is pretty much up to you. I would say it has way more depth than most games. It'll take you a good long while to learn how all the opponents you face online think and play. Plus there is plenty of stuff to do. What kind of depth are you talking about here? Length doesnt mean depth, never has and never will. VF4 is pretty much the deepest game ever and its short, just an arcade game, and only uses three buttons. Twitch/highscore games like beam rider, stun runner, Nights, tetris, and outrun have plenty of depth.

I think sequels of games should get similiar ratings to the first games in the series until the games start sucking or a better game with the same play mechanics comes out that raises the bar. The new king game would have to offer everything the other game has to offer though in order for one game to be obsolete though. So I think 9's should easily be rewarded to sequels that dont change totally. Plenty of games have gotten away with it before.

Oh, sorry. The original Out Run is supposed to run at 30 fps. So if that's what it is then fine.

The Sega Ages Outrun on Saturn (Japanese version) has a mode for 60 fps.

Anyway, Out Run 2 does have a few instances of frame rate stuttering. I've only noticed it in the mission mode, so far. The arcade mode seems to be fine at a solid 60.

Either way, this game is lots of fun. One of the best purchases I've made all year.

Well, my copy of this arrived today and I can't believe how fun it is. It is literally like playing the original game with a massive facelift. They even managed to get the sky transitions to look fantastic. The OR 2 version of Magical Sound Shower could easily pass for a Lupin the Third song, which rules.

I just got this yesterday, been playing it in between marathon Halo sessions. Got to the 10 section race against Jennifer, and made ONE mistake near the end and she beat me by a half second.


So Pissed. But the game is fun so I'll do it again.

I got my Live account up and running...do people still play a lot online??? I didn't check last night as I was playing Halo 2 and NFS:U2

I played 7 other people a few times yesterday while I was taking a Halo break.

I've only got the demo, but it's already my most played xbox game. I just wish I had xboxlive.

There are plenty of folks playing this on Live, also, the version of OR here is different than the one featured in Shenmue II. That version featured altered vehicle and roadside graphics, this one does not. Melf, I gave that code a whirl, and it's a great way to try it out, but it doesn't save, which is fine, as it adds to the incentive of unlocking all of the paths. An in-game checklist would have been neat for this. Does finishing the paths in heart attack mode count towards the A-to-E total?

Nope, according to the box, it isn't supported. I think that if we get SP at all this gen, it'll be through a $20 add-on, along the lines of Sega GT 2002 Online.

Picked up the game for $20 the other day. WOW! Do old style racing games BORE the shit out of me. How is this game better than BurnOut 3? And the music is trash too. Nothing is above average in the game. Now I know why its $20 already. Sorry guys. Some of you let nostalgia get the best of you on this one. Average at the very best.

Because it required a shred of actual driving ability (and just overall skill in general) to play, rather than Burnout 3 (which just comes down to reacting fast enough to not hit traffic)?

In the grand scheme of things (in a world currently dominated by Halo 2, Half-Life 2, GTA: San Andreas, etc.) this game is not that great. The shocker here is that neither is Burnout 3, but it ends up ahead in the eyes of TNL because it was not developed in Japan. :rolleyes:
