Excuse my ignorance, but what's WiFi? Can I go online with the DS itself, or will it serve only as a wireless receiver to an internet connection through a nearby PC?

The Nintendo DS has gained a lot of fans amongst developers alone, find out what they say inside.
The developers seem very excited about the Nintendo DS and have shown their support in full. While many of these quotes were included during the conference you may have missed them while being astonished by the DS.
“When Nintendo came down and presented the DS platform to us, … I think everyone was in shock. It was amazing. … Our technical and central technology guys were kind of drooling at the abilities and wanting so much to program and dive into programming for the system. … Nintendo DS, I believe, is a revolution in change for hand-held gaming.”
– Will Kassoy, vice president, global brand management, Activision
“The fact that touch panels can be associated with many terms about touching that we never had, such as touch, push, feel, rub, slide and pat is wonderful. … I have been working in this industry for 20 years. During that time I made many games. But I think this is the first time that we have a new input device.”
– Yuji Naka, senior corporate officer, development division, Sega
“DS is deceptively amazing. … Touch screen is a very blank canvas for a game designer to be able to design their own input features. … DS really could be a killer to PSP. … I really think the Nintendo DS could kick the crap out of Sony PSP.”
– Kevin Ray, chief technology officer, Majesco
“I am sure people have nice memory of yelling at a controller. Now, we have a more established function of inputting our voice. … Nintendo always pleasantly surprises us with interesting projects and interesting ideas.”
– Keiji Inafune, producer, Capcom
“Once again Nintendo is taking another leap in the gaming experience for the gamer by providing totally new game-play experiences, developing new gaming habits. Very characteristic of a Nintendo maneuver.”
– Jay Cohen, vice president, publishing, Ubisoft
That is just a handful of nice things developers had to say about the Nintendo DS. It seems official, the Nintendo DS is, as Nintendo put it, the “Developer’s System”.
Man, this sounds fantastic. I have yet to see any screens of games but just reading about it and reading some of those quotes from developers has me very excited. Its going to take some getting used to having Touch Screen/Stylus controlls, but its really the first video game system to use something outside Controller/Keyboard. Its really going to be odd, but controll is really what limits a game to how it has to be played. It will be really interesting to see how it will be used beyond these tech demos.
As for the look of the DS, looks fine to me. Its really not that important how much of a wow factor it makes. Its got six buttons (fantastic) looks like its a good width to hold in your hands, and has back-lit screens. Beyond that I don't really need much more. I'm not buying one to look fashionable, I am buying it to play videogames.
The PSP sounds like a really bland effort to me now, I could care less that it has GTA on it, I can get that on my home system. The DS is something thats actually NEW, its not just better graphics for a handheld.
I will be buying this day one you can count on it, and I have a feeling that lots of people will be joining me.
oh man, you're gonna lose it when you check out all the games coming to it.
I wrote a bit about this in Headlines, but to make a short story shorter, Nintendo ripped my foot off my leg and jammed it down my throat.
When the DS was first announced, almost all of TNL laughed at the idea. Myself included.
Now that it's been shown, it seems like most of TNL has been forced to eat their foot.
...along with their SPs. :(Quote:
