And I suprised no one has mentioned that its a combination of those carnival games where you have to slam the catapult with a hammer to launch the rubber frog into one of many cups, combined with golf.

LOL, it kills those games handily. In fact, regular golf games have become boring and mostly a thing of the past around my place. Where to begin? The characters are awesome and each has his or her corresponding frog. Of course you can select whatever frog you desire, which is nice because all characters and frogs have their own special individual attributes. For instance, the one eyed stone frog can swim through lava without getting burnt. It's the sticktoitiveness of these frogs that makes the game. Whacking their seesaw does not always have to be some huge drive or precisely accurate approach. In fact, fuck all that. The frogs will all jump a couple times once they hit the ground if hit hard enough and all of them will swim across any body of water. So then, we hit the frog to the closest bank of any body water and watch him swim across. While swimming he gets points for every paddle, may run into bubbles for points and can even get eaten by a big fish which presents even more points for every paddle the fish makes. Perhaps the fish will dump the frog into a pteradactyl's nest when he reaches the other bank. If that happens, the mama pteradactyl swoops down, grabs the frog and takes him on a ride for even more points. The more "friendly" obstacles you can get the frog to hit, the more the point values multiply. For instance, If I land in a spiderweb and get catapulted I get thirty, if I land near a fly and eat it, the fly will be worth whatver that fly was worth. But if the jump that gets the fly also lands me in another spider web, that new web is worth 60. If the second web sends me in the water, each paddle will be 2 points. If I should run into a lily pad it will spin and laucnh me. If I go back in the water, each paddle will be four points. Please keep in mind that there are a million obstacles. Woolly mammoths, space aliens, UFOs, pteradactyls, vortexes that transport frogs across the map, black clouds, flies, snakes, flying winged whales, slides, yetis etc etc etc. Plus! Each frog has a mind that 's entirely its own. So once you set him in motion, it may be a minute before he stops bouncing from obstacle to obstacle, eating his fill of flies and getting nabbed by snakes and fishes along the way. Some might say that there's no skill involved then. For shame! It's all about paying close attention to the course overview and sending your frog in the direction most likely to stir up the local flora, fauna and obstacles in your favor. First one to the hole gets 1000 and for every turn thereafter, it's 100 points less. So the fourth player wants to be the guy to get the hole first so there's no way that the others can get 1000. Of course a skillful player might dispense with the hole altogether and just try to rack points out on the course. The variety of possible ways to score and win is absolutely insane!
The frogs get powerups too. You can select a few at the beginning of a game and some are handed out. I'm not sure what every one of them does because I don't read me no Japanese, that's okay, the ones I do understand kick muchas ass. There's a rocket to launch the frog further, a UFO for WAY further and big jumps after the landing, there's a spring that provides only huge jumps after landing but no increase in actual driving range. The frogs must also look after their health. There are a couple of powerups specifically for making your frog feel better after he's run into a tree or a stone wall. Healthy frogs fly further and jump better after landing. There is also a stop sign that will keep your frog glued to the spot where he lands with no jumping.
The character intros are crazy and hilarious. Unfortunately I'm afraid that some poorly motivated American voice actors will blow this one. We'll see I suppose. My favorite character is the ghost that won't stop looking at his "Wonderboy" (like a Gameboy) and is always accidentally smacking his little ghost buddy that does all the talking for him.
The gameplay is also unlike other golfing games in that changing the strength of the shot will not only effect the distance of the drive, but the distance of and how many jumps the frog will make after he touches down. For distance shooting, you basically want to put the target on where you want the frog to land and then take into account a few more jumps. Knowing your frog, how he jumps and how his current health status will effect these jumps is key for estimating this. It took awhile to get my head around these principles because we've all played golf games and they are pretty universal in the sense that limiting shot power is a one dimensional thing. In Kero Kero King (btw, the sport is called "Kerof" in the import) limiting your shot power has a greater overall effect. Remember, hitting the frog to the hole the fastest is not always the best idea. Sometimes, hitting him one millimeter more than enough to get him in the water is all it will take to have an action packed shot that will score over 1500 points. On an open untouched course, I prefer to just set the little guy loose and see what trouble he can get into. On a depleted course (many "obstacles" such as flies, are one time use and then disappear) I might try to get to the hole first. It all depends on what the other players have taken and if getting to the hole first will get the kind of point advantage that taking time on the course won't.
This game is insanely good. I haven't played it in a bit because I usually only play games with other people on Sundays these days, but back in the fall and early winter, this game was on constant rotation. It's soo simple yet so dynamic that lots of nongamers (especially chicks) like to play. To me, this beats the living shit out of every golf game ever and I can't really go back to regular golf games very well. Mario Golf (N64 and GCN) both seem weak to me now, as does Hot Shots. Never did like the realistic ones. This game is just more exciting and dynamic. Make sure to have four players on hand.
If I was to fire up that age old argument regarding why I greatly prefer Japanese developed games, this is one that would go a long way toward championing my stance. It's incredible.
BTW, I just picked up the PS1 prequel whilst in Tokyo. There are alot of crazy characters, some of which are even cooler than the new ones, but it is ultimately weak, held back by the PS1's 3D limitations. It does however sport some lovely PaRappa style flat polys/spritely things. It might be worth checking out for the serious fan.

Thing is, the import versions for PS2 and GCN are different. The PS2 version looks to have more characters and some more levels as well. I have only the GCN one, so I can't say for sure. I should've bought the PS2 version instead of the PS1 one while I was abroad. I suppose there's next time.

I've played the US versions of both the GameCube and PS2 versions (my company designed all the US assets for this title) and they're both the same game. The US version comes with a bonus disk which is full of unlockable movie clips. Dunno if the Japanese release had this or not. It's definitely a great game for the whole family. The young 'uns and the women all enjoyed it considerably. The gameplay is too simplistic to for my taste. I prefer a good challenge, so I don't play it alone. But the humor and art style are enough to keep me enjoying playing multiplayer games with the family.
$20 AND a bonus disc?! teh maddness!!1...seriously.

in the demo for PS2 on some screens it actually called itself Ribbit King Plus and DJ said they were the same. So it's probably the enhanced version.

Nice review, Bubba. I would imagine that the clips shown on the RK site will be on the bonus disc, given the Ribbit King Plus title for both. Are the bonus discs basic DVDs or are they system-specific discs? I could see either one being done for a clip-based bonus disc, but I'm leaning towards system-specific ones being the likely choice.
I can honestly say, that after reading the comments about this game, this is the most excited I've ever been for a game about frog golf. No, really, I'm being honest here.
Does anybody know if those demos they speak of are for in store only, or are hand outs?

I'm hooked on the mini-frolf on the official site, it's more enjoyable than some full-fledged golf games. And to think that the full game will somehow be better...wow.
I'm going for the Cube version. The demo I played for PS2 had some framerate issues that effected the swing meter. No idea if that's in the final version but anything causing frame dropout in while trying to place a shot is something to avoid.
I'm pretty sure (not positive) that both versions should have the same content. I wish I'd thought to ask at E3, but too late now.

Bubba, yet another question, is the video quality of the videos on the bonus disc the same on each version? If they're the same, then I'll get the GC version, and avoid the potential pitfalls caused by the noted PS2 graphical issues.
Looked the same to me, but I wasn't looking for differences or a side by side.
Ah, okay. Cool, I'll go with the GC version, if there aren't any noticeable differences between the video quality, then I doubt I'll notice any.
We had a demo of this sitting in my store and I snagged it because it was free and no one else seemed to want it. I could really have given a damn beyond its freeness, though. But now, now I think I'll be giving it a try.

I'm hoping to snag a copy this weekend, with it being as rare as it will be, I'll take it for whatever system I can get it for.
I played the PS2 demo and it didn't do a lot for me.
Very crap framerate, very simplistic, and overall not very exciting.
Of course, this is just based on the half hour or so on the demo...but for now, I'll be sticking with Mario Golf.
Toys R Us got it in yesterday, so I picked it up. Playing multi-player with my wife and her sister it was pretty fun. Not as hectic as I imagined it to be, but fun nonetheless. Of course, I've never played any of the Mario Golf or Hot Shots games, so I have nothing to compare.
Master tells me that IGN hates it. I wouldn't know why. While the setting the shot and swinging portions of the gameplay are very very simplistic, there is a good deal of strategy to master. I was all wrapped up in the stupid goofiness at first and failed to notice alot of this.
And as far as the simplistic thing goes, it ain't real golf. Neither is Mario Golf nor Hot Shots. Just because one causes you do press more buttons or gives you an option on where your imaginary virtual TV golf club strikes the ball, does not mean it's any closer to being "real". I can appreciate the fact that some have grown used to a specific mode of playing imaginary TV golf, but I don't think it's necessary to expect that every game with a golfing theme (especially one that's meant to be a silly parody of real golf instead of a "simulation") should adhere to the same formula.
If you want to kick back and be entertained, this game is great, especially four player. If you're looking to go all anal and get your meticulous twiddle on with the controller, it may very well be best to stick with Mario or Hot Shots. Ribbit King is NOT golf.

All the reviews are scathing for this game, do people just like it because of it's crazy premise or would it be fun if it didn't have all the wacky frog themes?
The "flaws" I've seen mentioned could easily be boiled down to personal preference in some cases. Still planning to get this when I can actually find it.
It shouldn't be that hard to find. I've seen tons of copies at my local GS and TrU.
KB is carrying it too. I thought that was odd considering they don't usually get niche titles like this.
What all of this nonsense comes down to is that you all are creaming your pants over a subpar golf game because it has a frog in it. Play Links or Tiger Woods if you actually want quality golf gaming, not novelty garbage.

I have exposed this game to a few friends now... a couple bitched about how it looked and sounded, yet played the whole way through... they just can't get passed the "cutesy" graphics, but I keep finding most people get addicted to it :)
All these image obsessed "gamers" that won't play a game if it looks "kiddy" need to go back to doing whatever they did to pass the time before Playstation came out.
