Cable internet = evil

Since Saturday I've been without internet. Since then, I've had 2 Road Runner guys come here and have received completely new cables from ground up on a dedicated line, and went and picked up a new modem today. Still no connection--have a guy coming on monday morning.

All of the lights on the modem are lit except "ready" and "data sent"

Network connections:

1394 connection
Local Area Connection

When I try repairing them, the 1394 says TCP/IP not enabled. (though it is)

When I run Road Runner Medic and get a status:
IP - not public (wtf?!)
Gateway - reachable
DNS - not reachable
WINS - not reachable


I'm completely devoid of anyway to fix this.
I tried running directly to my brother's PC and he has the same problem, and NOTHING has changed since the last time it was working. Went to be with it working, woke up and haven't been on the internet since.

Unplug the modem and let it sit for awhile - 5-10 minutes is more than enough.

1394 is firewire. Unless you are using a firewire cable to connect to the modem you can disable this with no problems.

Did you (duh) restart you computer? Do this in conjunction with the unpluging.

Mine drops every once in awhile and an unplug usually fixes it. I mean power to the modem, not the cable in or RJ45 out.

EDIT : Oh and try different CAT5 cable. You never know ;)

I've powercycled more times than I can count. I even let it sit without power for a few hours. Nothing. When I got the new modem today, I got USB and a new CAT5 with it--that makes 4CAT5s and a USB so far--nothing.

Software? If everything has been tested with another (working) machine and checks out then it's a software problem. Uh, reinstall windows :) Did you check the network card? Does the cable TV still work?

I dunno. Check and recheck until you're blue in the face or find the problem.

Doesn't work with other machines--I'm going to bypass the network card in a little while and see if I could get a connection directly into the PC through the onboard connecition. Cable TV works. Software shouldn't be a problem--nothing has changed.

As for reinstalling windows--I've been thinking about it. :(

If the ready light on the cable modem is not lit, it's something on Time Warner's end. They can have perfect line signal strength, you can see the receiving and such lights on the modem, but if ready doesn't stay green, there is some sort of problem on their systems.

Find out if your signal strength is good. If so, then tell them they need to check their equipment, starting from the box outside your house. I had a situation where a patch panel in that box was the problem, and all it took was replacing it and everything ran fine. However, that was spotted only by the second tech. The first thought it was my house's splitter on the main cable input, so he replaced that and the line leading to the modem -- in other words, he was too lazy to go to the box in the yard, or he didn't know the first thing about it.

I suggest you insist on a "level 2" or "senior" technician to come out to your location to check the company's equipment. At the same time, insist that a senior tech inspect the authorization stuff in their system that authenticates the cable modem. You may want to ask for a senior technician the moment you get on the phone with them. If they refuse, ask to speak to a manager. You likely won't get a manager, but you may get someone who is higher than that first-level tech.

ive heard people haveing troubles from road runner in ny before, something about the lines needed signal boosters because they had new lines running to the houses but really old ones going to the data centers, dunno if that could be your prob or not, if u want i could look up where that article was, i got it off dslreports.com i think

So I dled a program last night to check my signal strength, but not sure how to use it. I'll be asking the tech tomarrow about the signal strenght--I'm staying home to make fun of him and harass him with questions he most likely doesn't know the answers to. :(

Cable techs are the freaking WORST. It always takes 3 visits to get shit working right. Just got to get the guy who knows wtf he's doing.
