That's impressive
Tekken Zaibatsu has this game coming out on the 25th, confirmed and final.
WTF? That would mean the game is done and in production right now. That also makes zero sense because that would put the release date on a Friday. The hell?
I still think it drops March 15th, personally. Either way, I can finally stop wasting money getting served something fierce on the arcade version.

Whaaaaaaat? That stick is more than fine, unless you either don't like Japanese-style sticks or you're really picky about the parts used (ie: you want offical Sanwa parts instead of Hori's own). The former will not apply at all (it's still Japanese style), the latter is solved (as it's based off their Real Arcade Pro, using Sanwa buttons and sticks.)Quote:

Oh hell yes.
It's been confirmed by Gamestop that Tekken 5 will contain arcade versions of Tekken 1, 2, and 3!
Not only that, but it's coming out in seven days!!!
How often do games get pushed forward? I expected a delay, but Namco is hooking us up! This is gonna be a great weekend.
Whaaaa.. this got pushed forward from the April 1st release date? And 1,2, and 3? fucking awesome.... I think I would've preferred an online aspect to T5, but I'll take this too...Quote:

Korly, to add to the Tekken 1-3 inclusion, Star Blade is apparently included as the loading screen game! Let's see here, five games, for $50, not too bad, although I might wait a bit to get it. I'd be all over that Tekken series box set case if I hadn't traded in my original copy of Tekken Tag like a fool. And since PvJ's thread will likely be closed, here's the review linked from it, with a lot more on the bonus Tekkens and some sad stuff about the story mode that make me want to wait for a price drop. The highlight in this link comes from the review comments, which are hilarious. I do feel sorry for the person who thinks this is online though. - http://ps2.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3138554&did=1

Sounds cool.
Loading screen games rock. I just hope the loading isn't too bad.
Tekken 5 Collector's Edition arrived..and I spent many shameful hours playing it.
First off. The artbook is a nice piece of work. It covers the art of the Tekken series from parts 1 to 5, you get to see the steady progress Namco's artists made over the years(Looking back Tekken 1 had horrendous art). The book also contains a bunch of conceptual drawings and although you've probably seen some of this stuff before it's still nice to have.
The Controller
Being a Hori you can expect quality when you purchase their joysticks. The Tekken 5 joystick is no different in this regard. This thing is freaking huge for one, about two inches thick and about 90 square inches in area this thing is freaking nice. The joystick itself is ball-shaped and feels quite comfortable. The buttons have a sloping outward feel that is actually rather nice, and the buttons themselves are sensitive so you don't have to jam your finger through the controller to register any input.
DVD Box
This very nice little extra is a paper/plastic DVD casing like the kind you'd see house the average DVD collection. This however is for housing all six Tekken games. Granted you're more likely to just keep the games in their original cases since they are easier to get to..but hey it's a very pretty box and features art from all six games.
The Game
Oh yeah! That too
Before you even get to the memory card loading screen you're treated to a game of Starblade. This game IMO is a really cool shooter that has the whole epic space battle thing going on. It's a very well done port running at a flawless 60 fps and as far as I can tell no flaws in the emulation.
Afterwards you are presented with both intros one after the other, first Kaz/Hei, then everyone else/shitty rock song. Afterwards you get to see a crapload of options
Story Mode: You get an intro and a really nice FMV ending for beating the game in this mode. You choose your character and fight 9 battles, the final one always being the big boss Jinpachi. Beating this mode with each character also unlocks additional ones.
Arcade Mode: Think Kumite mode from Virtua Fighter 4. Here you choose your character and move them up the rankings by winning various matches. You also can collect money from your wins to customize your characters. Your opponents vary in look and difficulty(Judging from their rank). Although due to the overall limited customization options as compared to VF4 you won't be seeing really crazy character designs. Still I plan on being in this mode full-time once I finish the rest of Story.
Time Attack: Beat your best time..not much else to it.
Team Attack: Make a team and fight another team...uh yep
Survival: Beat up as many people as you can before they beat up you
Training: Learn some moves
Devil Within: The other major addition is a 3rd person Action-Adventure game starring Jin. I guess you can consider this game a combination of Devil May Cry and um..Tekken. Jin has a Devil mode where by sacrificing health he can become Deviljin and lay waste to his opponents with eye lasers and everything. Most of the time however you'll punch the crap out of many same-looking soldiers while trying to collect money. I've only beaten one stage but eh it's alright.
Tekken History: Here you get to choose from Tekken 1-3 and Starblade. The Tekken 1-3 ports are excellent in their attention to emulating the arcade originals. Touches such as Ling's merry-go-round work this time unlike the static screen in the PSX version of Tekken 3. The emulation of the arcade games is exact right down to being able to access the dipswitch settings(No you can't mess with the coin functions since all the games are set to free-play). Oh and no worries as all characters are unlocked from the start..No endings though(It is the arcade versions after all)
Theatre Mode: Speaking of endings you can watch them here. You can also view various vids from E3 showings and other promo bits. Also the soundtrack is available to listen to.
Customize: Here you get to buy little items and colors to dress up your favorite characters..provided you have the money. You can also buy 3rd costumes(although they are pretty pricey at 500k) for most of the cast. Careful though as hitting start on a character gives you the option of erasing their information..something I learned the hard way after losing Anna's 3rd outfit :(
Options: Options..I think
---------------
The actual game that is Tekken 5 (if you haven't already played it in the arcades), plays closer to any Tekken game that is not Tekken 4. This means that you don't get the full-walk movement found in that game. IMO I prefer this since the free-walk..well..sucked. Also with less of an emphasis on walls the combo system is geared back to hitting huge juggle and/or stun combos. The system is well set up as in any idiot can string three moves together but they won't do much damage. Despite the game having some rather definite tiers(Steve, Nina, and I believe Hei are considered top) the game is still quite balanced. Obviously more time needs to be spent with the game to learn the various naunces and play effectively.
Graphically the game is right up there with the arcade version, with amazing interactive backgrounds and gorgeous character visuals. There really is not a rough spot in this game graphically(Though I will say the bare feet are kind of blech..but then again I hate feet so maybe I'm biased). The sound effects are standard Tekken fare. The music however has gone to a more Techno side unlike the "groove whatever" style in Tekken 4. Pretty good stuff imo.
Overall this looks to be the best game in the series and the assloads of extras are just wonderful. I would highly recommend the controller box-set though, the game plays like a dream with the stick.(And hey not to mention I can use this baby on my laptop via the USB magicbox thingie..and other PS2 fighters on top of that. Score!)
Very thorough impressions, thanks for them. I can't wait to get into the arcade versions of the Tekkens again.

Man, I can't freakin' wait!
Man, that art book is very cool. I am sure dj would like that.
Can you get the book, without collector edition?
I just downloaded the FULL intro video from Tekken Zaibatsu, and it's very cool. It even shows King and Marduk wrestling in a ring.
Also, according to the secrets page: http://www.tekkenzaibatsu.com/tekken5/_secrets.php
There are branching storylines in Story mode.
It's a preorder gift, and it should be for reg. edition also.Quote:

No, they're in every version.
Oh, good. I can't believe this is coming out Friday. How often do big games get pushed forward like this? So far the whole thing looks like a great effort on namco's part.
JM
I like playing Tekken, but the lack of online play isn't going to sway me to purchase Tekken 5, no matter how awesome the package is. Without having anyone to play against living near me, I'll get bored with the game after I unlock everything.
I'm hope that the Xbox Live implementation of DOA:Ultimate and the latest MK have swayed other companies to create their better fighting games with online in mind.
While online play would have been nice, the sheer amount of extras is recockulous. I don't usually buy Tekken's right off the bad, but I'm gonna get this one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/cx1/5ff7a0b8.jpg
Yeah...
That's hardcore, and has to take some wicket hand-eye coordination to pull off.
I've tried it. It doesn't work well, at all, because there is no diagonal, meaning you can't do a phoenix smasher.
I once tried playing TTT with a PS2 DVD remote, but THAT doesn't work either, becuase it'll only accept one input at a time (ie, you cant puch toward+2 or 1+2 or any other combination of buttons or directions.
So I picked this up today. I think it's really, really, good. The Devil Within mode is surprisingly enjoyable. I think it's a fun beat'em up. The Arcade mode is my favorite trying to up your ranking. The story mode is cool too, but the end boss can be super cheap. Getting hit with a fireball takes away literally half your health. It's still fun fighting him though. The graphics may be the best I've seen on the PS2.
Jinpachi is a bit cheap, but sidestepping is your friend.
Devil Within is several times better than I though it'd be.
SO, I had like, the worst day of my life yesterday, so I didn't really get to play as much of this as I would've hoped. (My car = Teh Suck). However, I did get to see about half of the endings, some of which were awesome (Kuma, Paul "Bring it on YA ALIENS!!") some of which were sucky (Mokujin, which is double disappointing because his T3 ending is the best Tekken ending of all time) and one that was disturbing (Lee).
I also made it to the 5th and final level of Devil Within, and I gotta say, I don't like it. The cool thing about Tekken Force mode was that even though it had awkward control, you still had all of your moves at your disposal. In Devil Within you get a punch button, kick button, guard button, and a jump button (double tap for double jump). Thing is, you get strings by mashing either kick or punch, but there aren't any combos of the 2 (ie: ppk, or kkp). When your Devil meter fills you can transform into Devil Jin, who is more powerful and has better strings but while in Devil mode, your life bar slowly drains. Devil Jin also has eye lasers, but using them takes chunks off of your lifebar. I guess the only reason to use Devil Jin is to get a better time rating, since he kills things faster, but you almost always come out of a Devil battle with less life than you would've had if you just stayed in regular mode.
Today is my girlfriends birthday, so I don't think I'll be playing it much today either, but hopefully Sunday I'll see everything else there is to see.
Or... y'know... foot eye coordination.Quote:

Right now I'm just sitting in practice mode against the Ultra Hard AI. After playing some Nina Vs Anna for awhile I agree that Nina is very top-tier while Anna is well..she sucks. A shame too since I hate Nina but eh..
At least King(My Main) for the most part has been improved, especially with the inclusion of a few of Armor King's moves. Sucks trying to learn his string throws since there's no way to view the commands for the specials on the bottom of the screen ala VF/DoA.
The final boss of Devil Within mode is pretty keen. Shame he doesn't show up in the actual fighting modes however.
True Ogre
Sucks. Anna is one of my favorite characters. Unlocked her and Roger Jr. last night, didn't get to play with her yet, but it's 1 PM on a Saturday afternoon. I am ordering pizza now and I am going to sit around and play this game all day, because I have nothing better to do.Quote:

yeah, it actually IS a damn shame that anna got toned way down. it's mainly due to speed issues more than anything(nina is just faster, and therefor has a more 'safe' poking game).
still love her easy 50% combo tho. :D

I'm really enjoying this game, and I hope to start the tournament scene back up down here. I wish it had a watch mode, though (cpu vs cpu), as some of the move animations and choreography is amazing, and are nice to just sit back and look at.
Bryan Fury ending is pure Predator fun :p
Poor Yoshimitsu
And the game is great.
The endings are by far some of the funniest I've ever seen in a fighting game.
Anyhoo I was playing around with Asuka some more.
A nice easy combo for her.
Forward LP, RK, jab LP, jab LP, Down-forward LK.
Does an easy 1/3 life.
Granted hitting the RK isn't always a 100% but eh.
However you can try linking into it from a back + RK(Asuka's knee)
Oh and Asuka's knee. I think I'm totally wrong but I was practicing against Ultra-Hard Devil Jin. Apparently Asuka's knee can be comboed into another knee. On average I was able to combo 6 knees before the opponent got too far away for further kneeing. I wouldn't call this an infinite(tho it very well could be) or even much of anything. Granted the combo counter registers it but I don't buy it. Then again don't put too much weight on this because I believe this sort of thing can be mashed out of. Cause hell for that matter I could just hit LP(not in a combo however, just like multiple jabs) repeatedly and the game calls it a combo.
Then again if it isn't really a combo you could probably get your opponent to eat a few anyway and then go into her forward LP, RK for a juggle combo.
EDIT: Then again the entire Tekken combo-countering system was always screwy..I could be wrong about everything...Guess it's back to working on juggles.
I try telling you people how bad it is, nobody listens. :)Quote:

Itigaki just did an interview at 1up.com
http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3138627&did=1
Funny stuff:
Quote:
1UP: Speaking of your enemies, Tekken 5 just came out in North America (and we know how you feel about Tekken), but doesn't feature any sort of online play, multi-tiered stages, or tag-team play. Do you think they chickened out of the online arena?
TI: First they put in all of these half-finished "features", then they take them right out again. Tag fights, elevation differences, walls. I don't know if it's because they're impatient, or because they lack the ability, but no matter the reason those guys are a pretty weird bunch. Any of those things would have become a bonafide feature if they took the time to do it right (laughs). Oh, and come on guys, let's quit trying to hide the prehistoric nature of the main product by tacking on some absurd "bonus game." I have been saying this for 5 years, haven't I? If you have the time to make an action-style "bonus game", why don't you create an honest-to-god action game and sell it as a standalone product? Oh, and if you're going to bother including such a "unique" form of ball play, you should do a beach volleyball game instead (laughs).
Oh, that's right, I forgot something important. You guys did do a "bonafide" action game, didn't you? What was it called again? Oh yeah, NINA: Death by Degrees.
Haha, Namco got owned by Itagaki and the truth.

Dole, I read in (I think) the IGN review, that the PS1 game endings are in the movie playing area.
I wouldn't be so sure about that.
All the arcade history games are ports of the arcade games, none of the PS version stuff included. I haven't heard anybody else mention being able to get the console endings for any of them.
I'm enjoying the game, but the fact is, Namco bitched out and took the 'safe' route on this one. Not a single new or innovative feature at all, it seems. It feels like Tekken 3+2. Not to say that's a hugely bad thing, but I'm just saying, dated gameplay doesn't necessarily definitely doesn't make this the greatest Tekken ever.
What I get most from the home port is that they didn't allow themselves enough time inbetween arcade->home transition. They tried to benefit off of momentum, rather than the full product. I bought the collector's edition and that's great and all, but the fact is, including a bunch of features nobody gives a shit about, like Devil Within, and not really focusing on features that are pretty much vital in today's climate, like online, really serve to play up some of the game's weaknesses, in my opinion.
Also, the whole thing with the ground-damage, if you aren't going to impliment it right, just don't put it in at all. The way it re-fixes when new damage occurs looks so shitty.
Anyway, as much as I love the game, and as big of a Tekken fan as I am, I just feel like Namco really got scared and tucked tail. The fact is, Tekken 4 wasn't even that bad of a game because of the new gameplay elements, it was the balance issues that hurt it the most. Tekken 4 wasn't even universally hated, it's just that the whiny dogs barked the loudest, so you hear a lot of Tekken 4 hatred around, mostly because it was different. The answer isn't completely abolishing most of the new elements from that game, it's either replacing them, or implimenting them more properly, using lessons you learned from the previous games. It's only a failure if you can't learn from it. You can tell that they just wanted the game to please the most people, rather than take any steps in actually advancing the genre. This permiates the game, from the contrite mini-games, to the extremely weak (although funny and cool) stories and endings in comparison to Tekken 4, to the lack of innovation within the game.
I'm having fun with the game, and since htere's no moves to toy with, it's still great, but it just feels like Tekken 3 with new characters and moves.
Regarding Itagaki, yeah, he did make some good points, and I think that pretty much everything he said was dead on. But like Barry Bonds said, clean your own closet before you come out to clean anyone else's. The fact is, inside of Itagaki's mind, he thinks that there is a rivalry between him and Namco. Clearly, from Namco's unwillingness to respond to anything he has said over the years, they don't feel the same way.
Itagaki's games are fun, and the quality of them in today's climate can't be denied, but he can't really talk about relying on gimmicks to propel one's self forward within the gaming arena, and there's two really good, bouncy reasons why.
And yes, I know about 'crush.'
Tekken 4 was shit. The engine was bunk, backgrounds blew, walls every couple feet were broken as fuck, absolute poke-fest, etc. For a game that's barely a couple years old you're already letting nostalgia bite you in the ass. Different? Yes. Good? No.
Online?
If it were online you'd just harp on about people dropping out of games, lag costing you matches, idiot players, etc.
Sure Devil Within sucks, but so does the Force Modes from T3/4 and Tekken Ball(yeah I said it). Tekken Bowling on the other hand is amazing.
If Namco really thought Tekken 4 worked on any level they would have taken the time to implement it in part 5. However seeing as how that isn't the case.
And in conclusion:
"You can tell that they just wanted the game to please the most people, rather than take any steps in actually advancing the genre."
You don't play many fighting games do you?
The fact that devil within continued past the third stage made me cry.
I loved Tekken 4 when I first played it, and it's still fun today. PvJ, folks ARE allowed to like different things. I'll try to rent T5 this weekend, I enjoyed the brief demo in DbD.
Tekken 4 was ok, but part 5 definitely upstages it. I thought Tekken 4's stages were ok in design, but dull in color. Tekken 5's backgrounds look generally more vibrant. The cloud reflections on the Dragon's Nest floor are sweet.
Heihachi in T4 would've been good as a sub-boss ala Tekken 3- NOT the main boss. While fine for T1, he was a letdown after seeing Ogre in T3. Jinpachi isn't really that overpowered IMO- if you find a certain weak spot that you can exploit with the current character, he'll go down hard. Shutting him down with Kazuya is easy.
Stage design is advanced over T4 IMO, since there are some that don't have walls, and the ones that do give you a bit more room. The uneven ground from T4 is something I could have either taken or left, to be honest.
Who is the strategy guide by?
Edit: NVM, Brady Games. Unless there is more than one? Anyway, it makes me happy that these days real gamers are actually attempting to make legitimate strategy guides. I heard the 3S guide made a few months back was actually pretty great.
I'm getting T5 sometime later this week. I had to wait a while since I only have a Jps2, but I'm sure it's going to be worth it.
The Street Fighter duide is probably the best fighting game game ever made, if not the 2nd best (The Tekken 3 arcade guide is really fuckin' good). I don't play Streetfighter, but if I ever want to try to get into it, that guide will be essential.
well well well, baek sure is a combo fiend. if any baek players here want some of his more "advanced" combos, just let me know
Talk to me. I've been using him as a secondary character.
Chux: To get maximum damage it's good to learn the Flamingo~Lightning Halberd~Flamingo technique.
How it's done: After doing the Lightning Halberd(ie..3+4), hold forward to land in flamingo, as soon as you land in flamingo, let the stick return to neutral, then execute another Lightning Halberd. Wash Rinse Repeat.
While this technique takes a buttload of practice, the high damage output you will recieve from your combos will make it worth it 100%. Now onto the fun stuff:
N = Neutral
F = end in flamingo(hold forward)
1,2,f+3 = One Two Flamingo Step
f+1+2, 4 = Spinning Axe Combo
3+4 = Lightning Halberd
Launchers = d/f+2 ... u/f+4 ... f,f,n,3
Unless otherwise noted, these combos can be performed after any of the launchers described above. HOWEVER, using the d/f+2 is far more reliable(but less damage is garnered)than the others.
(1,2,f+3),(1,2,f+3),(1,2,f+3),f+1+2,4
9 Hits, damage ranges from 50-58(40-43%). Bread and butter combo for people who haven't learned the Flamingo~Lightning Halberd technique and want to keep it simple.
(1,2,f+3),(1,2,f+3),n,3+4(f),f+1+2,4
9 Hits, damage ranges from 52-60points(42-45%). Variation on the Bread and Butter combo for people just learning the Flamingo~Lightning Halberd technique.
3+4(f),n,3+4(f),n,3+4(f),f+1+2,4
9 Hits, damage ranges from 57-66points.(43-48%). This is THE combo to practice the Flamingo~Lightning Halberd technique with.
(1,2,f+3),n,3+4(f),(1,2,f+3),f+1+2,4
9 Hits, damage ranges from 52-60points(42-45%) depending on launcher.
Another awesome variation of the standard combo. This time sticking a Lightning Halberd in the middle of a pair of One-Two Flamingo Steps.
4,3+4(f),(1,2,f+3),n,3+4(f),f+1+2,4(Moderately Difficult)
10 Hits, damage ranges from 63-72points(48-55%) depending on launcher.
Note: Hit the standing 4 early so you have time to land the 3+4. The rest is cake.
-This combo can ONLY be done off of the f,f,n,3 laucnher and is Moderately Difficult-
uf,n,1(short hopping horizontal punch),df+1,3+4(f),n,3+4(f),f+1+2,4
9 Hits, 67points of damage(around 50%)
Note:Getting used to tossing out the uf,n,X moves will take a bit, but it opens up a whole fuckton of options for combos. The rest of this should be academic if you can do the ones above.
-This combo can ONLY be done off of the f,f,n,3 launcher and is EXTREMELY Difficult-
b+4, 1, 3+4(f),n,3+4(f),f+1+2,4
9 Hits, 66points of damage(around 50%)
Note:You NEED to land the b+4 as soon as the opps head starts to move while up in the air. If you do this to late they fly out of range, to early and you miss. It is FRAME SPECIFIC, so get to practicing.
-This combo can ONLY be done off of the f,n,d,df+3 launcher(skyrocket kick) and is Moderately Difficult-
uf,n,4(short hopping snap kick), df+1, 3+4(f),(1,2,f+3),f+1+2,4
9 Hits, 78points of damage(around 55%)
Note:Just remember to land the df+1 as SOON as you land from the uf,n,4 and this shouldn't be a problem.
-This combo can ONLY be done off of the f,n,d,df+3 launcher(skyrocket kick) and is EXTREMELY Difficult-
uf,n,4(short hopping snap kick), 3+4(f),(1,2,f+3),n,3+4(f),f+1+2,4
10 Hits, 83points of damage(around 60%)
Note:To land this combo consistently, make sure you are ON the money with the Flamingo~Lightning Halberd technique. You cant waste any time between transitions on this one.
That's all for now, but these SHOULD appear in an upcoming video I'm currently working on with a homie from the local Tekken crew. Keep an eye out.
Fantastic. Appreciate all the strats.
Damn Whitefolks... damn.
Do Asuka and King next please! :link: :)
Awesome combo listings. Beats wandering around Tekkenzaibatsu.com
if asuka and king had anything outstanding past their already discovered combos...then i'd be all about it. :(
btw; you guys want video clips of these?
Yes, I'd like to see 'em.Quote:

The "Baek Step"
This is performed by executing df+3+4, holding 3, and tapping forward to cancel into flamingo. Once in flamingo, press df+4(thus executing another df+3+4 thanks to the earlier buffer of 3 mentioned above), then tap forward to cancel into flamingo. This is used as a way to cover ground quickly and as a mixup starter(from the flamingo you can do df+2/sidestep/or get his f+2,3 command throw).
The "step" in motion
The "Baek Wave"
This is accomplished just like the Mishima wave dash and is used for the same reasons. To execute it, do the crouch dash motion(f,n,d,df) and after ducking down tap forward to cancel, then repeat.
In long hand it looks like this: f,n,d,df~f~f,n,d,df~f~f,n,d,df,etc etc
The technique is used just as with the Baek Step, only with the Wave Dash you can automatically duck under any "high" attacks and auto low parry any "low" attacks if done fast enough(at that speed it is called the "Light Step")
Here it is
Double/Tripple Side Stepping Explaind, with a side of combo
Double and Tripple Sidestepping with Baek is common amongst high level play as it gets the player DIRECTLY to the side(and sometimes BEHIND) the opponent allowing for free sidethrow attempts, or df+2 launchers.
To perform the maneuver you HAVE to sidestep to the opponents left, go into flamingo stance via b+3(double), then sidestep to the left again(tripple). It needs to be done in a fluid motion for maximum effectiveness, so practice is required.
After you've sidestepped and landed your df+2 launcher, you need a combo right? Well, here's a 40%+ guarenteed combo that works off the double/tripple sidestep with Baek.
Tripple Side Step Combo
What to do off of a Counter-Hit df+3
Any Baek player has landed this move, but how do you get maximum damage while the opponent is stunned? Just mimic this video clip and you're good to go(hope you've been practicing the LH~F~LH technique).
Free damage
Fuck, I want to try this stuff, but I'm without a PS2 until I get to move back into my dorms on Saturday. Couch surfing isn't conducive to playing a lot of Tekken 5. Dammit. :(
edit: fuck, 5, I meant 5. I hate Tekken 4.
Good stuff Whitey. Of course, I hate Baek, so it's useless to me. I am a Paul/Kuma player. I'd like to learn Wang and Marduk next, so feel free to share your knowledge if you ever pick up those two.
even tho Baek strats/juggles are useless to your gameplay style...you can't deny that those juggles are dead fucking sexy. :D
I concur, hot as hell.
