I can't run this demo. Geforce has been apparently boycotted by EA.
I just click the exe, it goes black for a bit and does a little white jump then back to desktop. I upgraded my drivers and still no go.
I guess I won't be playing this then.
Same thing happens on my GeForce. I'm running a 4600 Ti with 128mb, and according to the specs, that isn't powerful enough to run the demo, which is most likely why it isn't running. I can't get it to run on my ATI either, which makes absolutly no sense at all. I just feel like this demo isn't compatible with everything they wanted it to be, hopefully the final version of the game will have these bugs worked out.Quote:

If you run in windowed mode (go to the shortcut path and change fullscreen to 0) then it will tell you the error. Mine says something about queries not allowed or something. I dunno what is going on.
It's a X300 with 128mb, which should be plenty to get the game to run at its lowest settings at least. When I try both SP and MP modes it gets to the "Starting Server" message, and it just freezes. I've never had this kind of problem running a full game, let alone a demo. This really surprises me considering how large of a demo release this is. I've all but given up on the demo, and I'm going to wait until I hear impressions of people running the game on my card before I pick up the full game, this has me worried. :sweat:Quote:

Wasn't there a user named Rent A Hero here? I met him in one of the servers, and talked to him.
Are you running a firewall? If so, I'm positive that's what's freezing it. I'm running ZoneAlarm and the "allow/decline" pop-ups started showing.Quote:

Your the man. I tryed turning off my firewall yesterday, but apparently I didn't do it the right way, tryed again when you mentioned this, and it worked like a charm. I can run the game at medium with terrain on high without a problem.Quote:

As well, Desert is much better suited to this game play than Jungle, so I'm thinking this is probably going to be a vast improvement on Vietnam.
I wish I could play the demo map single player and still get access to the planes and helos. I don't like having to fight for planes when i'm learning, since I'm probably just going to crash in a few seconds anyway. I did manage to get most of the flight controls the way i want them, but helos are another matter.
trying to command a squad on the pubs is a nightmare.. even friends of mine were off on their own missions some of the time..
spawn camping is annoying.. but it happens all the time.. and this game actually really makes you do it. luckily you can spawn at the squad leader.. unlucky, since i usually am the squad leader.
i never play medic.. but medic in this game is really cool. revive is quick, auto heal in vehicles, and heals team mates close by when you have the medic box in your hands. also has decent fire power.
Spawn camping is only frown upon when it cones to bases, but this game makes it necessary to do so in order to take out artillery. But this game makes it more fair because it gives you more tools to defend and also is easier to defend. They've gotten rid of most of the complaints of the Battlefield series. They have balanced this game and made it alot more fun.Quote:

As such, I'd love to meet up with some more people tonight (last night I was playing with a squad of two other friends and a bunh of rotating pub-users). Check out the Xfire sidebar for my server info.
I'm down for some games tonight.
Hope the server screen doesn't crash like it did last night.
I finally downloaded the demo last night. Wow. What a great game. I will have to download Xfire and get aboard, so I can play with some people that actually want to use tactics. Playing on a pub with random people is a blast ... but once you link up with 2 or 3 guys that can play, the game becomes the greatest game ever.
Oh yea... boycott EA, right?
I love setting myself as a spawn point (squad leader, whatever) and getting into one of those boats that hold 5 and just driving it up the river right to the enemy's main base. Constant barage on their vehicle and plane spawn. It rules.Quote:

God damn this game keeps getting better and better. The more I've played the better I'm getting at flying, and I'm figuring things out like switching weapons in flight and such. On the ground I'm getting my ass handed to me most of the time but there are moments...oh glorious moments when vengence is wreaked, WREAKED i say!
If this game were a man I'd felate it. But I think I just did anyway.
I can't even get this game to install.
WTF?
Anyone else having similar problems?
FYI, it gets up to installing the client server, fails, and then tells me to restart the entire installation.
my game installed fine.
haven't played much yet.. but if the demo is any indication.. i should be playing quite a bit.
Anyone else want to post to tell me they didn't have any problems installing, got out of bed this morning, saw the sun rise, or something else equally unhelpful?
I was going to play this on Jonas' computer but it doesn't work with his geforce graphics card. I love Battlefield too.

start off with your PC specs.
Try taking it back and exchanging it for another copy, it could be a problem with the actual discs. It may seem like a long shot, but the same thing happened to me with Doom 3; tried installing it about 10 times to get to a point in the installation (same point every time) where it would crap out. Exchanged it, and the second copy installed fine.Quote:

Probably a copy protection problem. Publishers dont give a shit about you if it is. How old is your CD or DVD drive?
Because I was having problems with every game I tried to install (RTW, WOW, HL2) and then I got fed up and bought a DVD-RW drive.
Five months.Quote:

I got the retail version today. Having all kinds of problems with it. The game takes a year or more to load any level (this is even after the shaders have been optimized), it seems to hang on the verifying client data portion, and then if and when i finally do get into a game it lags fairly badly, even on 16 player maps, and if i somehow manage to complete the round without disconnecting the game crashes to the desktop when it trys to load the medals won in round screen.
My current specs are Athlon 64 3000, Radeon 9500 Pro, and not enough Ram (512mb). I just dont understand how the demo could be running so well and the full game be such crap.
are you playing on the stats ranking servers by chance?
those seem to have problems.
i have the same specs as you. but my CPU is a athlon xp 1800 which is far crappier.. and i've had some decent games. turn off dynamic lighting. :D
Wait, EA released something buggy? please people, stop being so shocked.
Oh, and Error, you really need to get more RAM. There's no excuse to have that little anymore since RAM is dirt cheap right now (you can get 1 gig for $57). Even I have 512 megs, and that's in a 6 year old Athlon 500.
Oh, I know I need more RAM. I also need a real job that gives me more spending money than 3 bucks a week it seems.
OK, I've tried quitting every running application from the task manager before installing, installing in Safe Mode, and copying the contents from the disks onto the hard drive and manually installing from there.
Nothing works.
The prevailing opinion on the net that i've seen is to update every single driver, even stupid ones that have nothing to do with gaming, and then try installing.
Can you point me to any sort of discussion of this problem?Quote:

Thats where i've been going for all my tech updates. but i got the install all new drivers bit was actually from 8-bit theatre, and when i went back and re-read it he had managed to install but then it wouldnt boot. but who knows, it might work for you.
I'm really not surprised that DICE released another game that is going to be unplayable in some form or another until one or two patches have been released. I just got fooled by how well the demo ran. Still, i'm going to keep working on it, hoping in vain i get it to work.
One suggestion i see that worked for somebody that had a problem similar to yours was defraging their hard drive.. heres his post:

This game is the best thing I've played for a really really long time. All you guys have to do is get PC's that are up to spec, a good broadband connection and stay away from ranked servers(random drops). I really don't understand all the problems , but I'm sure that there'll be a patch soon.
Put it this way, I would go out and buy a new PC just to play this game. It is that good. When you get some good people in your squad (like Destro 777) and you have a competent commander, this game is fucking unstoppable. There is so many more strategic aspects to this game, its unreal. Don't be fooled by thinking that there's only 12 maps. They are immense. Being able to scale them down is great as well.
Once everyone actually gets up to speed, we NEED to all get together and play this game. Don't let these little problems scare you off. Get your PC's up to snuff. Get the game!
This game really is something amazing. The squad feature forces people to play as a team, even total strangers - that is just about a first for an online game. The maps are really good too. They are so huge that its literally going to take months to learn every nook and cranny, and with 12 of them, its almost overwhelming. Me, changeling, and a few friends have been tearing this game up for past few days, and once you get a good squad going, videogames are rarely THIS fun. If you got the hardware to run it, you owe it to yourself to buy it.
Its funny all the features in this game (the commander role, character classes, vehicles, and required teamplay aspect) are almost all the features and overall setup of the TeamFortress2 showed at E3 all those years ago that suddenly dissappeared. This basically IS that version of TF.
Not even valve could get away with something as buggy as Battlefield 2 though. That really sucks for those who cant get it running. I helped my uncle get his up and running and he had alot disk install and audio/video problems. You really do have to update your drivers to the very latest to have it work. (unless youre using nVidia - see below). Im sure all of that mess with be sorted out soon with patches, but still alot of that stuff is unacceptable.
Lastly, a funny bit that may or may not be related to valves's siding with ATI with HalfLife2. nVidia sided with DICE for BF2. When you install BF2 it comes with an nvidia driver update and it asks if you want BF2 to update the driver for you. Funny thing is, the driver came out on the day of BF2's release, and IF you install it - you can't run HalfLife2 or any of its mods! The only way to play HL2 is to roll back your driver. Now you dont NEED this new driver to play BF2 mind you, but the general public isn't going to mess with rolling back drivers and crap. nvidia and DICE taking a jab at valve?
That is some serious bullshit. They have to stop that garbage right now.Quote:

I really wish Dice would've gone with a different publisher, though, because a lot of it seems to be stemming from EA's server bullshit and what not.

Wow, I'm glad I read this thread before I bought the game...
I'm definately going to be waiting on this until these problems are all cleared up.
Same here. When they fix this buggy shit i'll definitely buy it. I can play the game but every so often the game starts glitching on the graphics and forces a reboot or just crashes my machine all together.Quote:

Also, this is a dumb question, but I heard you can like... parachute out of planes and run attack squads in fully functional war planes. THAT sounds awesome.
I just got a new computer back in february, and I was browsing this thread in hopes of it helping me decide if I want to pick this up, but all it's done is remind me how much I hate PC gaming.

so.. i played on the ranked servers today for a bit.. got up a rank and a half.. almost up to lance corporal. also received 6 gold medals (top of the server) a few silver and bronze.. was decorated in medic, engineer, and commander classes.. and pick up some combat ribbon.
commander is rough when you have a bunch of wackos who charge into your artillery fire and then punish you when they die.
like i said.. i'm on below minimum specs and run the game fine.. some problems exist but are easy to get around once you know what is going on. high player count servers that are ranked are a no no... they are so laggy it's horrid. my game hangs after the level loads for the first time when joining a server.. while it is verifying user data.. super annoying.. but if you just wait awhile.. you can join.
I bought the game Friday (had a bunch of Best Buy rewards saved up). Definitely had a lot of fun. No problems installing or playing (X700, 2.8 ghz Pentium, 512 Ram).
As long as you pick the correct servers (ones where you ping low), you can get a lag free experience. I was even playing on an EA Euro server for a few hours with no lag and pings around 110.
The game is insanely fun and I have only scratched the surface. My old beef with BF42 was that infantry was pretty worthless. Most all the guns stunk and armor would just roll over you (at least in the versions I played). Often times you would spawn ... run somewhere for 2 minutes, then have a jeep run over you. They seem to have balanced everything out .. and being able to spawn with squad mates makes teamwork so much easier and cuts down on all the needless running to get into action.
I actually like the nerfed sniper class. A good sniper can still rack up some kills, but doesn't bog down an entire map. (I have played games where snipers are gods, and most people spend the map either whoring the weapon, or hiding from those who have it. Very boring). It really makes the game move alot faster. I understand that it must be frustrating for someone to get a good bead on someone and hit them, they take cover, and you never get the kill. But, it's all for the better.
Then go play Halo, seriously. You are simply robbing yourself of possibly the best multiplayer experience this generation. Besides that crazy WoW that everyone seems to love.Quote:

You PC fanboys are ridiculous.
The biggest problem this game has is a complete lack of a matchmaking system. Which is a pretty big problem, admittedly.. But finally getting into a real match makes it all melt away.
Being my first Battlefield game, I'm still amazed by how *epic* everything feels. Few games can match the rush you get chopper-hopping from one capture point to another while coordinating artillery strikes on your next target.
Also, parachutes rule.
The game is pretty balanced. Two of the classes are a lil bit weak, though. Sniping isn't as one shot one kill as it should be, but then again, if it was, it would turn into Joint Operations. That wouldn't be good. I think the strength needs amped up a little bit but thats all. Oh, and the suppost class needs to be able to do SOMETHING. Maybe call in little air strikes once. Kinda like Wolfenstein. That'd be cool.Quote:

I agree with that. My friends and I have been using Xfire, which gives the server IP that they're on, so its not too bad. I just can't wait for them to make it a one click connect to the server.Quote:

anyways. GREAT FUCKING GAME. :)
In the interest of informing any other fence-sitters, BF 2 is on sale this week:
Circuit City- $34.99
Best Buy- $39.99
The glut of good times that I got out of the demo (so much so that I may avoid engaging in any action on that demo map for a few weeks) and a couple of cobweb-covered gift cards convinced me to price-match the CC ad at Best Buy today, and I ended up paying about $12 in actual cash for a CD-Rom copy of BF2. Chances are, BF2 will become obsolete once Quake Wars: Enemy Territory hits, but until then, BF2 will probably be my multiplayer FPS of choice. Now that Xfire actually has their wonderful “one-click joining” feature working from peoples’ friend lists, it should be a bit easier to meet up and organize into squads, so I suppose I’ll see everyone else online sometime soon.

Ok after clicking the link this looks like its more of a mod than anything EA is doing, but I could be wrong. Anyway, heres the link. I saw the original press release on BluesNews, and its now down in yesterdays news.
http://www.bf2combat.net/
Also saw a post on when and what the next offical patch will be hitting.
"Towards the end of August, we will be releasing a new patch, 1.03. This patch is currently underway and will undergo thorough testing before it goes out to avoid the problems that have occurred in the past. There are over 140 fixes and improvements in this patch. Here are just a few of them:
Server and Client performance improvements.
• Improved Server Browser - added Favorites and History Lists.
• Point-farming prevention - game will stop Support/Medic/Engineer point farming exploits.
• Squads - locked squad leader will get a message if someone wants to join.
• Many HUD improvements - see the names of others in your vehicle, zoom level changing depending on vehicle, map zoom depending on map setup (16, 32 or 64 player map) etc.
• Teamkilling changes - the logic of how teamkills are tracked will be changed.
• Gameplay tweaks - the way transport helicopters work will be tweaked.
• Additional scoring changes - players who destroy an enemy commander's assets will be given points.
There are many, many more fixes that will be included in the patch but we’re looking forward to everyone moving to 1.03 to get the best BF2 experience out there on a level, cheat-free playing field."
I read that official EA/DICE message about an hour ago, and although I'm slightly surprised to see that the developers are still interested in amending an abundance of BF 2's faults, I just can't see this title surpassing or even maintaining the level of longevity that BF 1942 has attained. With only one mode of play that many players have already poured massive amounts of hours into in past installments and a modest amount of enjoyable maps to entertain said audience, I can only cast my eyes towards the mod community in hopes of creating a compelling, ever-continuing experience within the BF 2 world.
That said, BF 2 remains the most epic and mammoth multiplayer experience offered inside the FPS genre, and it will probably continue to receive heavy playtime until its competitors (Quake Wars) come out next year.
Who knows, perhaps the upcoming expansion pack will puncture my perceptions.
I hope the expansion pack gives us more gameplay modes. Conquest IS getting old.Quote:

Quake Wars is being developed by Splash Damage (this is the same team that worked on Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, the stand-alone, multiplayer expansion that was released for free via the internet in 2003 and still maintains a fairly fervent following). In fact, most of the people I've been playing with in BF 2 are online buddies that I met during the early days of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (although, I eventually stopped playing ET because my computer just didn’t have enough muscle to manage the game’s memory and graphic card requirements.)Quote:

I started using x-fire again, so look for me post 9pm Pacific nightly.
