Same here bro.
Same here now.
There is no such thing as a typical gamer. Whatever floats your boat.
I happen to prefer to bounce rifle grenades off a wall into someone elses face until it blows up nightly, but that's just me.
I prefer buying games, more than playing them.
I play about as much as I read. I usually give around 2 hours a night to reading the 'net (TNL, IGN, etc) in addition to doing other stuff, like writing up a test or inputing grades into my class website. Then I usually play for about 2 hours as well.
The funny thing is, I hardly get a chance to play on weekends, which is when should be playing most of all.
depends on if its a slow month or a really nice haul one.
This is the disenchanted gamer phase. Step one on the road to recovery is to post on a message board asking if such malaise is normal, so I'd say you're well on your way.
I'm in the gamer apathy phase myself, nothing new really interests me and I don't feel like playing anything I own. This happens to me every once in a while, but usually something comes around that snaps me out of it.
He He Thanks mate.Quote:

You guys are weird. That reminds me of what people do when they are young...they go to sleep with their prized possessions ;p
ive been playing games more lately
Been playing more too. God bless the SNES.
I play games more than I read about them. I didn't play very many games at E3, though.
I think it's because each one of us knows our way pretty well around the gaming net. TNL's alot of fun when it's interesting, so most of the time I'm caught researching on games more then playing. However, I just played close to 3 hours of CvsSNK2 with a friend and it was magical.
Do you even play games?
No. Bitch.
I typically go from one extreme to another. Most of the time I hardly touch games, and then I find one that I really like and play it almost non-stop. Recently, I've probably played more games than I did in the last year and a half or so. I recently picked up JSR Future, which I was absolutely addicted to. Then, I decided to sit down and beat Metroid Fusion, as well as Fatal Frame 2. Finished Metroid, and once I beat Fatal Frame 2, I'll probably go back to not playing very often.
Unless I break down and get a GameCube this week like I've been thinking about. If I do that, then I'll have Metroid Prime and one other game (either Animal Forest or Harvest Moon) to play.
I just try to play one game at a time now.
I used to buy a ton of games every month, but about a year ago i just finnally figured that i'll never play all these games. So I learned to be more selective. I figured its funner to get really into one good game than to brezze through one only to pick up the next one ASAP.
now that i'm working at a game store, the last couple months i'd drop about $100 on games every pay day. but i figure i'll buy a ps2 on friday with la pucelle and that should hold me for a couple months so i can save some money, excpet if i see something old that i need in my collection. i haven't been playing too much now, just some gcn and gba.
I tend to play less and such until something really catches my eye. Then, I will play it non-stop until I beat it. Just resently picked up the Zelda bonus disc gcn and went through OoT now trying on doing Master Quest :)
actually yeah , I have been playing more than before i just got a new graphics card so i have been playing morrowind and swg more. plus i am addicted to custom robo until i unlock everything.
Keep it up and you'll quit games, sell all of them, and not look back. Just like me.
the only game I've played in the last two weeks is Worms World Party.
I've actually played it a lot.
Yet you'll still frequent a gaming message board. Ironic isn't it?Quote:

I just picked up a new graphics card for my PC this weekend, so I spent quite a bit of time playing SWG and KOTOR, plus a couple of levels in Halo.

That's what I tend to do. Play tons of something I really enjoy. Get tired of said games. Stop playing all games for awhile. Repeat.
I play games a lot. I just have a bad habit of starting new ones before finishing old ones thus leaving many half-completed games in my collection.

I haven't had time for games lately. Reading message board posts doesn't take nearly as long as it takes to reach the hidden opponents in Taisen Hot Gimmick (PG13 edition, though it claimes Cero18 on the box). Though I played the E3 preview of Guild Wars way more than I should have.
I play lots of games and read about them all the time, but find myself fantasizing about dropping the whole endevour sometimes. Probably the only thing keeping me from doing it is fearing that I wouldn't find anything better to do, and the time spent not keeping up with current gaming affairs would mean I'd miss out on lots of cool things. Sometimes it's good to do that, though. After Gamefan went under, for about a year I barely kept up with the gaming world at all. I didn't have the internet then, so there was no way other than mags and by then I'd sworn them all off except for Gamefan. The PS2 was released around then, and I could care less. By the time I did pick up one I bought about a dozen games for around 20 bucks each, which was nice:)
In the last two days I've played City of Heroes, Red Dead Revolver (a lot... this game's addictive) and La Pucelle (rather play Disgaea). I usually read about games more than playing them because I'm usually strapped for cash or would rather buy a movie. I just bought The Last Samurai on DVD and am eyeballing Once Upon a Time in the West.
There's just too many places for my money to go.
I still play a good 3 hours a week, but it's pretty much all Bemani these days.
I foolishly started playing MOO3 and Civ3 again back in April. I haven't stopped playing either since, which leaves my consoles to rot under the TV with the now dusty cable box.
I don't play nearly as much as I used to so I read alot more than I game. Mainly bugeting issues so currently I play the occassional GBA game and any PC freeware that's descent enough.
Talking about games is booooooooooooooooooooring. Playing them is fun. I have very little time so I choose to play. Posting about games more than playing them is something that I consider to be very very sad. I mean if you don't want to play a videogame, why on earth would you want to waste time talking about them? Is that some symptom of attention deficit disorder?

I also go through bouts of not playing anything at all and having my ps2 collect layers of dust to playing it like a korean playing Starcraft. It all depends on what's available and what interests me. Right now I'm winding down from massive Onimusha 3 playing, but I'm still trying for my S rank. Chances are, after I get that I won't play my PS2 until either July or October depending on what's out and what grabs my interest.

If you're TALKING about games more than PLAYING them, I can't imagine that you have a whole lot of fun with the games you own. Why? Because otherwise you'd be playing them! And that's sad, because there are a lot of great games out there.
Do you have some sort of inferiority complex or something? He's not trying to be insulting. You're always insulted by what someone else says, but believe me, you're much worse. Maybe that would make you feel better.
As other threads have explained, I suffer from Insumountable Pile of Games syndrome. IE, there are so many games I need to beat, the task is so daunting that I just usually shrink away in fear (or play something that I've already beat, for some odd reason).
I usually play and finish about two games per month.
I haven't turned on a console since RE:O was new, but that will change with Metal Slug 3. PC gaming saved me from stopping gaming all together about a year ago.
nice habit.
Occasionally I've been playing some Frozen Throne with friends, and Halo on my PC, but I haven't played any console games in this past (and final) semester of college. That changed a bit when I returned to Mario & Luigi after finals were over, and now I'm playing a bit of Advance Wars on my laptop since all my games are back at home and I'm staying with my gf right now. Think I'll bring my Gamecube next time I go home and come back to visit my gf. :D
I haven't played anything all week and it feels good, like I've given up smoking or something. Have more time for more constructive hobbies, have more movie to feed my less wholesome habits. A good thing all around.
Wake me when Halo 2 comes out or something.
Way to come to your buddy's rescue.Quote:

Oh, shit, PaCrappa and BoBVila, Im really sorry I enjoy chatting on TNL more than playing shit 16-bit games or whatever! What the fuck should I do? I have one or two games I enjoy playing and I play them when I feel like it. Any more and it's not as much fun anymore. But the ones I do play I enjoy just fine, thanks (RON and UT2K4 now), and I imagine that everyone else who is in the same boat as me will say the same thing.
"it's very sad", he says? It's "very sad" to just do one thing over another because it's more enjoyable? Well, I guess that settles it - HE says its very sad and that's that. But let me ask you - who the fuck is he to make that call? And who the fuck are you to say the same horse manure? Both of you can eat a dick.

There was no excuse for "I think that's some type of ADD, those people are very, very sad", that was intenionally provoking anyone so he can come in here and make more claims about how he's right and we're all stupid and have ADD for talking about games.
I find it hard to break away from #TNL sometimes. I don't know if you've noticed, but I talk to a few TNL people here and there, and it's not always about video games. Sometimes social interaction (be it in person, on the phone, or in a horridly nerdy chat) is more fun for me than video games. Yeah, when it gets to be bedtime, I look back and think, fuck, I should have beaten this game or put a few more hours into that one... but I still enjoyed myself in the end.
I'm going with diff on this one: people will do what they want to, and I don't see how talking to people about something you like (which is quite addicting, I might add) is sad in any way.
Playing games is too dang time consuming, and unlike TNL I can't do it at work. I just don't have time for six 40 hour epics a month.
I also find myself being pretty underwhelmed by pretty much everything that comes out these days - I'm sure that has everything to do with my age & how long I've been playing games, rather than the quality of the games themselves.
Every once in a while something amazing like Ninja Gaiden comes along that I really get into, but mostly I find myself just going back to the old favourites - Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII, an occasional game of KoF, or some ESPN NBA/NFL. There's pretty much nothing else coming out that I want to play until the fall.
I still play a lot of games, and often feel I'm one of the few left on here that does, but I'm not ashamed of it in any way, nor do I think people who just want to talk about games should be. If talking about games (or just talking to the other people who you've originally met through a previous interest in games) is what's fun to you, more power to you. Nobody's to say what you should or shouldn't enjoy doing but yourself.
That said, I do find myself talking and reading about games probably as much as, if not more than I do actually playing them, and though I sometimes feel like I could've better spent a day chatting in #TNL by doing something more important, I don't regret it at all as long as I enjoyed myself. That's all that really matters.
In the last week or so, I've spent more time writing about games than playing them, but only because Nick said he'd kill someone close to me in a beer fueled rage if I didn't.
I read more about games then play them, but that is because my current job affords me alot of time for that. All I do is a few items a day which require about 20- 40 min of my time each. The rest of my 8.5 hours a day at work are usually about reading forums/news about games.
I know that I would play way more than I game were I to have a different job. I play anywhere from 8 to 30 hours of games a week. When I am at work I read about 20 - 35 hours of gaming stuff a week. I would really have to pump up my gaming time in order to out weigh my total reading time.
Also Pop'n Music has been eating up way too much of my time.
The strange thing is that I spend about 28 - 60 hours a week involved in gaming. That is a hell-a lot. I should get another hobby... nahhh
And there are ways diffx could have responded other than saying "And you sir, are so fucking pompous and full of shit that I reckon you're gonna explode soon." Hence my point.Quote:

As for my response to the topic of this thread? I spend about as much time talking about games as I do playing them. I don't play nearly as many new games as I used to; lately it's been just Final Fantasy Tactcs and Culdcept.
Shapermc, can I have your job?
I NEED it! ;)
Anyway, I read more often about games on Insert Credit and GameSpy, etc. than play them.
If I am playing games, then you can bet they're either:
a) shit TurboGrafx games
b) old Sega 8 and 16-bit games
or
c) something modern that reminds me of games from an era I can't let go of.
But really, I play no more than 5 hours a week these days.. and even that's a stretch.
I do play games, but rarely. It comes in spurts. I keep forgetting that before I worked at EB, I loved games but not so much that I thought I had to play them 24/7 at the sake of other things. Every so often I mug myself about not playing them and, God forbid, doing something else like reading a book or watching T.V. So, I force myself to play games I don't really care about because it's something I truly feel I should be doing.
I agree with Mzo about the TNL addiction thing. It is fun to talk to people about random shit who have games as a common denominator for interests.
P.S. Man do I hate you, Mzo.
Very sad because I've lived it. Indicative of ADD because I have ADD. There. I've said it.
So much anger from the youngsters. I suppose that what comes of one's entire social life being comprised of a keyboard and a monitor. Have fun lads :)
PS: Thanks BoB :)

lol! I'm in the exact same boat. The stack is so big and just keeps on growing and growing that playing any game seems like a waste. Even if I beat it, big deal, it's not even a scratch on the surface. So I just don't play anything most of the time.Quote:

I did play some Nox a couple days ago and had fun. I think it was Red Bull induced enjoyment though more than anything.
I still love to play video games just as much as I enjoy talking about them. If I'm home, I'm playing a video game or setting up a game with some friends. That said, since I'm still out of a job I've been playing a lot of games recently =X
Playing with friends is one thing I dont think I'll ever get tired of. It seems to make me want to play more. There are times when staying on TNL is more fun, but most of the time its because I just finished some epic Japan style RPG that takes 80 hours to finish.
There was a time when I would play something to death, leave it at 50% completion and jump to the next best thing. Their was an article in GMR by the Gaming Geezer that explained this very well. Not appreciating anything. Now I'm just commited to finishing everything I have until I can buy something...
Compass: Yep, as of late I seem to enjoy the thrill of the hunt more than enjoying the resulting feast, as well. Lately, after I get off of work, I think I've actually been looking forward more to going to scour used game stores and pawn shops for good deals and finds than actually going home and playing the darn things... 9____9;
And would everyone be so kind as to stop blowing PaCrappa's comments out of proportion? His comments just seem to be lighthearted poking fun to me, nothing to get so worked up about.

That and I'm stuck at work all day every day.
I play too much in fact, but since I don't have a job that's some what a given.
But I found myself being bored with gaming a couple of years back, I thought about the situation and found out that I should return to my roots where short challenging games was king. I don't spend much time with "shitty 16bit games" though since this new found love has made me discover a gigantic ever increasing library of great games, branching out and trying new things is important.
And it's a fucking bliss around these parts I tell you, staying away as much as I can from message boards is a good way of preserving my interest, for some it's no longer a hobby and that's people I tend to stear clear off.
On the topic of "shitty 16-bit games": Sometimes I find myself playing them more than modern games. Not because of nostalgia, but because there's simply no hype for a game that's more than a decade old. No one is talking about it, so the experience seems fresh, unique.
By the way, this thread is a good one, so let's keep it amicable. Certain parties could have thought better of the way they worded things, other parties could have been more tactful in their retorts, and the real victims are those that were enjoying a spirited convo.
Let's keep it civil. Nobody is getting banned because of this type of tomfoolery, but we owe it to ourselves to keep cool.
Anyway: I've said it before and I'll say it again. For all you people that are "done" with gaming, you will be back. They all come back. The secret to longevity of interest is to diversify your hobby and interest portfolio. When I start to get bored of gaming on the whole I spend some time with another hobby for a while, until I get bored of that and it is back to games. That and giving up RPGs.
I am constantly amazed that people have time to play them in their entirety.
The truth. It...burns.Quote:

I haven't seriously played a game in a long while. Maybe when I have more time to relax, but who knows when that'll be. I don't miss them all that much though.

Yeah, I'm in no rush to finish playing through my games either. I'll play through them when I feel like playing through them, not because I have any real need to beat every game I own.
Thanks for your feedback guys. I just finished another semester at college and I will try to dedicate some more time towards gaming. Perhaps dig into my pile of shame... or perhaps just chill in the sun... :)
I like to think I play games and talk about them in equal amounts. I guess I'm kinda lucky in the way that I live in the country where there isn't a whole helluva lot to do and most of my friends live atleast a good ten to thirty minutes away. I don't have anything against people who talk about games more than playing them, but that changes the minute they start talking down to me.
Anyway, this is a hobby for me and I don't see any reason of getting out of it. I don't like sports, I'm not big on the club scene, and just random chatting on AIM or even at #TNL gets boring real quick. I like playing games and talking to other people who share a similiar interest is nice too.
It's all about having the conviction to use what you've purchased. The only way I'll not play a game through to the end is if it sucks. It may take me forEVER like it did with Ogre Battle 64 (about a year) or I may marathon out like with Silent Hill (about a day and a half). I play arcade games and arcadey console action games at random. But anything mission/story based such as Otogi or Chain Dive (i'm still in the middle of this one after like six months or more) gets played one at a time so I can pay attention, remember the story and just generally give a shit about my hard earned $50 piece of recreational material. New games bought whilst one lengthy game is in play are sent off to the storage with the rest. Pile of shame? Hardly. It's not like any specific physical ability that is inherent only in youth is required for playing an RPG or "adventure" game so I'm quite comfortable waiting til the time is right and I can properly pay attention.
So if I have only X amount of free time, and that should probably be a lower case x because I usually have very little, should I use it to talk about games with you sensitive, easily butthurt knuckleheads (you know who you are and if you don't, everyone else does ;) ) or just go ahead and play?
I should start a poll!
Pa
Got Tenchu for xbox and I'm back to playing games, so naturally I don't feel like talking about them anymore. Excuse me while I sneak up on unsuspecting victims... nin nin nin nin...
strangely im back into ssx3 now again, i had kind of flaked on it(pun, i know) but now implaying it pretty steadily, i have maxed out one rider, and have 3 others halfway maxed. Swg has dwindled a littel, and morrowind is still taking most of my gametime, but now since ifinally beat the main quest, i might give it a rest for a bit and give the modding community time to catch up with me. like talking about games beacause some people here are fun to talk to about games, particularly on games that have an interpretive story element that we can discuss, but i dont see alot of storyline talk on ssx, so i will be playing more and talking less.
I tend to rotate my consoles pretty well, one gets use then another then the pc, but i never play so much that everything else in my life dissappears. I still watch tv, go to movies, eat, bathe, etc.
sums me up to a t.....well when i actually DO play. been spending most of my free time trying to find another job. got fired a couple weeks ago for a really dumb reason and dont like sitting around the house.Quote:

there is seriously not enough time in the week or money in the budget to come close.
but as im typing this, im thinking about my obsessive personality, and im coming to the conclusion that if i did have the money, i could never find the time or the energy to play through the massive pile of games i would like to buy. id wind up the same way most likely. sounds like it would be easy to get overwhelmed.
im really thinking about selling off a great portion of the old collection. it would be nice to lighten the load and make some cash (for more games?!), but the obsessive collector in me, and the nagging thought that i will regret selling the games and want to play them again soon after, is making me consider this carefully.
tough choices!

Why does it have to be some workload tedium issue? Do videogamers need to meet some fucking deadline? It's a hobby. You know, spare time recreational sort of thing.
Pa
"Must fill quota! Must fill quota!"
I guess I read more about games then play. I don’t buy many games mostly because I don’t have a lot of money and I’m pretty picky when choosing a game. I want to hear if the game is good and if it’s worth buying for 50 dollars before I buy it. Unless I can find a good deal for them.
Has anyone ever just had enough, packed up their consoles and put them in the basement? What are the chances that I will ever pull them out of the basement again, if this ever happens? Perhaps abstaining from gaming, for a while, will make the joy of it return? I did this with my musical gear (synthesizers etc) a few years ago, and I never returned to composing... Based on this; dare I pack them away?
I suppose I could also move the shit over in our vacation house... No wait, burglars.
