Graveyard Shift

Well, I start my new job tonight and it's the graveyard shift (10pm - 6am). It doesn't seem to be to bad but still kind of nervous. Any one work(ed) the graveyard shift, how did you like it? I'll be at Target stocking, I'm expecting it to be rough for a week or two but hopefully I'll adjust.

i had a few overnight shifts when i was in college. since i worked at a computer lab, it was pretty nice. we just watched movies and goofed around all night.

i don't think i'd handle it very well anymore, though. for one thing, none of my friends have compatible hours, so my time off would be pretty dull.

Night Shift is the best. I've been working overnights for the past two jobs and three years, and outside of a few adjustments I really do like the schedule.

The only problem is that nothing else is open when you'd like it to be (10p6a isn't as bad, but I get out at 3-4a, so if I have to do anything I have to wait for it to open). Other than that, the lack of traffic driving to and from work on Night Shift makes up for a lot of the annoyances.

Did it for a month and hated it.

When I was going to school, I worked from 2 a.m to 10 a.m. I'd then have to go to school from 11:30 to around 4. I never did adjust to that time schedule. I found it rather hard to go to sleep at 6 and have to wake up around 1:30 a.m.

If you're just working and have no other time commitments. I'd say the graveyard shift is probably not that bad a thing. At least you won't have to deal with traffic.

It depends of what your job is.

If you're working at a depot or factory, night shifts are fine, very relaxing, but it messes up your biological clock on the sleeping ordeal.

If you're working at a corner store or even worse, gas station, your life is at risk.

I work at a gas station.

Done a couple overnights where I work, only advice I could give is rest up for them before hand - or before your new job starts... get plently of sleep when you can and let your body adjust. Remember its against the human clock to be up when the sun's on the other side of the world.

I used to work as a network operator for a fiber optics company. In the day time it was a lot of calls and day-time soaps and shitty co-workers. In the graveyard shift it was just me, in a room of computers doing nothing for lots of money. I loved it. I loved it all.

I do the nightshift for US company Becton Dickinson over here in Belgium.

The perks are nice and its actually better for my shedule(time difference between US and Japan), so when I get home I can contact people in Japan if needed and after I wake up around 5pm my time I can contact people in the US at their work before im of to mine.

It allows me to combine my hobby(vidgame journalism on a semi proffesional level) with a real job.

That and a total of 52 days of a year for traveling purposes works out really well for me.
