Creepy no matter how you look at it. The method of killing is especially vicious, but the ages of the kids really disturbs me the most. You have to wonder what goes through an 11 year old's head that'd make them do this.

I'm curious how many, if any similar crimes were committed by kids with similarly "morbid" fascinations with Battle Royale, or at least, blamed the movie for such behavior. I could imagine it'd make for a pretty easy scapegoat, at least, an easier scapegoat than saying Doom or Mortal Kombat was responsible for a teen shooting up their classmates.

I downloaded the comic, different stories, same opening. The movie's been around for a while, but then again, so has BR.

I disagree. This is a horrific occurence, but I don't think even more than a ridiculously small proportion of the population would even think about doing this.

To my mind, it takes a unique mind to link watching a movie with doing something that awful in real life, but I don't think it's got a correlation with age. I think there's a good chance that, had this girl waited 'til she was 18 to see Battle Royale, she may have acted in exactly the same way.

Or maybe I'm just trying to comfort myself by labelling these people as mentally unstable, thus pre-empting any suggestion that something like this could happen in my community.

The movie exists because there are actual suicide clubs in Japan, not the other way around. Ritual suicide has been a part of Japanese culture for centuries.

Yeah, basically. It's a bizarro world support group for suicidal people. People meet up on message boards and chat rooms to basically die together. They die with total strangers. The Battle Royale Manga isn't that rare. You should be able to find a few copies in your local Books-A-Million or Barnes & Noble, or all of them at Amazon. I got a copy of the first movie (subbed) through Amazon.

The book isn't that rare, either. Borders or some place similar might have it, and if not, you can ask them to order it.

I thought the book was awesome. Even better than the movie. Poke around ebay for the movie and you may have to special order the book Mzo (though Amazon might have it).

Remember in Commando when they kidnapped Arnold's daughter and the guy was all like "sleeting a leetle girl's throat...is like cutting warm butter" and then Arnold pumped him full of about a hundred bullets 20 minutes later? What a great movie.

Note I said "could be taken carnally".

And I know all about about dating psychos. I once dated a girl for a few years years that went through all sorts of fun phases, including anorexia, bulemia, and cutting herself with razor blades, until they finally discovered the right combo of anti-depressants to give her. Japan seems to be having an explosion in dark/goth/morid stuff coming out now. I guess its a new depressed generation spawning and coming up in Japan now.

This is such a sad story. These sad jokes and talk about how cute the murderer is, is beyond stupid. Makes me wonder what the fuck some of you people are taking? Some of you come off as being psycho, as a result of your poorly thought out posts.

I think he means the novel. They're both the same story but they accent different things. The manga is far more violent and it adds a lot of new backstory while leaving out a lot of the info the novel had. They actually work pretty well together and reading both gives a bigger overall view then just reading one or the other since it's not just a recycled-but-now-with-pictures transition.

I was taking a course in Criminal Investigation our teacher told us about how he'd come on the scene of a gruesome double homicide, body parts strewn everywhere, a sea of blood, and the officers on the scene would be laughing and cracking jokes. When asked if he found this strange or even disgusting, he said he felt quite the contrary, and that he'd only have been distrubed if they hadn't been joking around. The ones who internalize the stress, obsess over the horrible things that happen in this world everyday without rhyme or reason, they're often the ones who most often hurt themselves or others.

What I'm trying to get at is, stop being so judgmental over how a few people choose to distract themselves from what is without a doubt a pointless act of murder by one child onto another. I'd rather shrug the whole thing off with a joke or two than spend every night for the rest of my life wondering what it was that drove that little girl to take a box-cutter to the throat and wrists of her classmate. You don't have to be a relative or a friend of the victim or the killer to be effected by this, you only have to be human.

It's not like any of us had to deal with the site of the dead girl either. We did'nt know her, but to make fun of the situation is not in good taste or mature for that matter.

The manga is far more violent and it adds a lot of new backstory while leaving out a lot of the info the novel had. Yeah, I'm talking about the (english translated) novel. Came out last summer I think. It's got a red cover with the silohette of two kids with Battle Royale in black. I'm assuming that it's a straight translation, but either way I loved it, even more than the movie (a lot more character development). Wasn't it a book and then turned into a manga?
