Nintendo asks gamers to vote for the next batch of NES re-releases

Yeah, I was in Best Buy yesterday and just discovered that they actually had the gall to charge $20 apiece for carts with ONE old NES game when you can just download as many free roms to your PC as you want.

I am expecting Punch-Out!! to get a lot of votes, because I have met very few people that don't love that game.

In the 3 other blanks I selected, Blaster Master and Ninja Gaiden 1&2.

Kid Icarus, Metal Gear, Contra, Tecmo World Wrestling, Pro Wrestling, WWF WrestleMania Challenge, Castlevania, and World Championship Wrestling on the GBA...a man can dream.

Was there a Gargoyle's Quest game for the NES, and if so, would it be worth voting for?

Well.... I wouldn't mind paying that for Battletoads or Castlevania III or something... But what gets me is a game like Donkey Kong. That's already on GBA as a $5 E-Reader game. Now it's on GBA again, but this time for $20? Riiiiight.

Plus, you can just download some of them to your GBA via Animal Crossing, which has them in there for free. I don't mind the $20 for some, where I'd actually get that much out of them, but in most cases, it's obscene. $10-$15 a game would be reasonable, still a bit high at $15, but a better bargain than some GBA stuff.

I'm a bit confused.

Let's something like Contra and Mega Man 2 get most of the votes. Wouldn't it be Konami and Capcom's decision, respectively, to let Nintendo use their games for the re-release?

I mean, Mega Man 2 can win, and Capcom can just tell Nintendo to fuck off, so what's the point?

Some of these are silly as stand-alones since they've been wedged into other games already, like Metroid in Zero Mission, or Dr Mario in Wario Ware, or Balloon Fight in Midway Classics.

I want to vote for Metal Gear, but I know it'll be the NES one, and the NES one makes me sad :(

Blaster Master was already re-released on GBC.

I voted for Gun Nac, Conquest of the Crystal Palace and Mighty Final Fight because they're relatively hard to find and they need more exposure.

I am guessing you are taking a poke at Balloon Fight being like Joust. One problem, Balloon Fight is better than Joust. None the less Balloon Fight is on E-Reader, and Animal Crossing. Seems silly for them to release it, but I am a goon for Balloon Fight and would probably buy it.

I did take that into consideration, but I had heard there were some issues that people had with that version, not to mention how hard it probably is to find now. It doesn't really matter much anyway since it seems you can take the survey more than once.

For the 3 write-ins:

-Mighty Final Fight
-TMNT III: The Manhattan Project (They put the other 2 games on the main list, yet leave the best version on the system off; wtf?)
-Silkworm (I thank Giga for showing me this game)

Regardless of you two fighting, $20 for some of these games is definitely ridiculous.

Like someone said, there's the e-Reader, where you can play a lot of those games for $3-$4 and an e-Reader, or there's Animal Crossing, and then there's the fact that a lot of those games have been re-released in better versions, a lot of which you can get for under $20 if you look around.

Nintendo really should look at the games they're selling before making the prices all $20. Excitebike today is not worth $20. Sorry, it's just not.

I hope this survey alters the next batch, because the second batch that came out in Japan is really weak. Just about all of them can be played in some other form on the GBA. One of them is Mario Bros., which can be played on any of the Super Mario Bros. Advanced games, or E-Reader.

The way they're marketing these games seems like they're aiming for the nostalgic, casual gamers more than the hardcore gamers. I think they're looking for the 18-26 year old males who grew up on NES and may only own one current system (or maybe none at all) to pick up an NES GBA SP, and a few of those $20 games. I see way more ads for this stuff in Maxim and its ilk than I do in video game magazines.

Maybe they'd make more money by marketing these to the serious nerds. I'm sure plenty of people would buy these all up at $5-$10, but I think they're doing alright as is.

And that second one I would be iffy with. NES games are just not worth that much, especially thanks to emulation.

Guardian Legend, Clash at Demonhead, and Conquest of the Crystal Palace.

I'd love to say Golgo 13, but damn has that game not aged well.

I haven't bought any of the re-releases yet, do they have parts of the screen cutoff or pixelation due to the different aspect ratio, like you'd see in PocketNES? If the image is clean I may keep an eye on the bargain bin for a few when prices drop.

I just went and voted. Metal Gear (unmodified translation plz), Tecmo Bowl and Adv. of Lolo please.

If they're not gonna release Mother 1+2 here, they could at least put out Mother 1 as part of these rereleases, considering the translation was finished when they scrapped it.

Regardless they sold more than 1 million in their first batch in Japan alone. Business wise it isn't such a bad decision.

I have Zelda (yeah, yeah, I know, but I love the game and I'm a sucker), and the backgrounds are squished, while the sprites are full size. It's a lot cleaner than PocketNES.

Oh, and I'd pay $20 for Adv. of Lolo. It'd be perfect as a portable game.

The Classic Nes series is a GREAT idea just executed really damn stupid. They shoulda have been 10 games one cart for $20 and had them in categories. Sports, Action, etc.

These ports cant cost Nintendo shit and their hosing people for $20 bucks a game. BULLSHIT.

I work in an Independent New/Used video game store, and I just want to go off topic for a second and say that it's statements like that, and people like you that put places like us out of business. I agree. Nintendo makes this silly survey and they left the one NES-to-GBA port that everyone wants. Not only do they have both Mother games already ported, they have them translated too (in fact, the version of Mother 1 used in the GBA port was actually a retranslated NES version). All they need to is replace the original Japanese text with the English text)

I would've voted for Metal Gear if it wasn't for the fact that the NES version was a rather badly compromised version of the superior MSX version to begin with. In fact, I much rather have Snake's Revenge rereleased (it was a good game, fuck the haters) before seeing the NES Metal Gear again.

You just proved my point for me. It's not people like me who are putting you out of business, it's Nintendo by throwing one old NES game on a GBA cart and charging $20 for it. If they, say, made NES compilations for $20 (which wouldn't cost them much if any more than putting one game on the system), I'd be all over that.

The fact is that I'm not cheap at all, I'm just not interested enough in most NES games to bother paying $20 for one of them when, as you say, versions just as good (if not better) are available for $5 or less. Or free. But I'd never rip off games from more recent systems.

The reason Nintendo's GBA market consists mostly of ports is because you people keep buying them, while bitching endlessly that they don't do anything original any more.
