Sega Saturn

I bought a Saturn last year, and I finally got around to hooking it up a couple days ago. I only own one game right now - Nights - and it's great, but I'd like to add to my library a little. I'm not a huge fan of strat-RPGs, but other than that I'm up for pretty much anything. So I'd like some recommendations, and I also have a few specific questions:

- I've heard a lot about this 4-in-1 cart thing. Where do I get it? You can play imports with it, right?

- I want to get some good, affordable vert shmups (i.e., not Silvergun). DoDonPachi is on the top of my list. How much is it going for these days, and where can I find it?

The 4-in-1 cart allows you to play imports, and it also doubles as the 4-meg Ram cart, I believe. The other 2 functions? Beats me.

As for imports, any Capcom fighting game, really. The ones that work with the 4 meg RAM cart especially (Vampire Savior, X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, X-Men Vs. Marvel Super Heroes, Pocket Fighter etc.). With the RAM cart it's like having the arcade versions...all the frames, no slowdown, and almost instant loading.

Yeah, it plays imports. If you get the 5-in-1 it also has the extra RAM built in for Capcom fighters. THough I don't know how good the 5-in1 is overall. I'm sure you can get it at most online import shops thats till sell Saturn shit. If not, ebay definitely should have some.

As far as games go, if you like RPGs Shining the Holy Ark, Albert Odyssey and most of all, Panzer Dragoon Saga are all great games. If you're into Zelda and Alundra style games Legend of Oasis is a lot of fun. These all had a domestic release so...

4-in-1 Action Replay. Easily found on eBay. Plays all imports I can think of.

Yeah, you'll run out of US titles pretty quickly, so I definitely recommend getting it to play imports any way you can.

I need to get a 4-in-1 thing, been on the to-do list for ages. Anyways, some great Saturn games to start off any owner:
Sega Rally
Daytona USA
Virtua Fighter (1, Remix, 2)
Fighter's Megamix
Astal (still a beautiful game)
Clockwork Knight (1,2) - great platformers
Dragon Force, awesome RPG-ish game
Dark Savior, neat platformer/RPG, fighting reminds me of Power Stone for some reason
Bug! - unique platforming that got a lot less unique with the crummy sequel
I would recommend Panzer Dragoon, but that can be had for free in PDO, so there's little point in buying the Saturn original
Street Fighter Collection, tons of SF greatness in two discs
Sega Ages, great arcade gaming, the value of this is reduced due to the games being in Shenmue II as well, and available for play via a menu.

There's nothing wrong with shmups. There's actually a lot right with them. Shmup fans, though, are probably the touchiest gamers on the planet. It's just fun to mess with you guys sometimes. I said an upcoming Cave shooter sounded gay, and three or four of you guys almost commited suicide.

I was mostly just saying it because apparently being new, or unknown to "tyler durden" is like worst thing that could happen (see all of his "who are you?" replies for more info).

SFZ3 works fine with just the 4M+ (unmodded).

Now, the 4-in-1:
You can get one almost anywhere. Most online stores carry it (ncsx, lik-sang) and its definitely findable on Ebay. And yes, it plays imports and does so very nicely, though it does tend to fuck up your cartridge slot to the point where it will only recognize the 4-in-1. But unless you plan on getting your system modded down the line... I wouldnt worry about it.

The typical going price of DoDonPachi for the Saturn is in the 40-55$ range. I imagine you can find it on Ebay fairly easy.

Aside from maybe Powerslave, I would avoid the Saturn versions of all of these and just play the PC games, except in Alien Trilogy's case where the PS1 version is the best. Duke Nukem 3D is surprisingly good for the hardware though and beats out the PS1 and N64 versions.

Tyler go to www.thewestexit.net for a ton of cheap Saturn imports, Service is class. I order most of my PC Engine games from him. Reliable and affordble too for trying some games you might not otherwise try.

Some people do enjoy it, I guess. I was so thrilled to find one of the few English Cyberbots machines out there at the Super Just Games (now Nickel City) in Illinois, and... well, I found the game kind of boring. I played it more in MAME at a much later time and just couldn't get into it. I recommend you do the same, hey, maybe you'll like it.
